What weird weather we're having #4

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Sally, at least it seems as though you have most of the mess out of the way so far. Even if it's muddy. Ahh, you have to stop and enjoy it every now and then, even if it's not completely "complete" yet. What's the point if you don't? Hopefully tomorrow wont be too rainy for you. It wasn't bad in Eugene today. It rained this morning until about 9. and then it was on the verge of raining all day until about 3pm. Rained until 4, cleared up a little, got dark, I clocked out and went home! Hopefully tomorrow will go at least as well for you.

Eugene, OR

I could do with just an hour of rain. Got my best warm weather raincoat washed today, so I'm ready. Snow level is coming down, are you going to be in it? I think snow would be better than wet, windy, sleety, nasty cold.

Yes!!! I am so glad the mess is mostly gone, that bothered me a lot. I have this really neat bear that I put on the deck, it's in the garage right now. I've been putting his bi-annual varnish on. Try to get a picture of it posted. I have to get my neighbor to help put it back, it's too big and heavy to do it by myself.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I definitely agree with you about the rain. An hour at night would be perfect, 365 days a year. I'm not really mentally ready for it, the snow, yet. But, it will be happening soon at work, although we've already been up in it 9 or 10 times, but it was always sunny out. Hopefully it will hold off at least until Dec. until it reaches my place, actually there was on two nights that were down to juast a couple hundred feet above me already. I do prefer the snow to rain, but only if it's light, dry snow on sunny days. most of the time it's wet snow on cold days, it's only a hair better than rain. But, it is still better.

I'm looking forward to seeing this bear. It sounds really cool!

Eugene, OR

He's special. Made by the man who sells on Hwy 58. When I retired my crew took up a collection, gave it to me at my going away party and told me to buy something that I wanted for our new home that was totally impracticable. They knew this was not in my nature, but I think I did well. Sent them a picture, but I can't find it. I think it was before digital.

Forgot to say earlier, good job with the goat!!

Off to bed, have a good day tomorrow.

Mary, I haven't looked at the albums yet, but watched your video - great job!!!!! Very cool doggie you have, by the way!! Nice job of taking the video and getting it onto Picasa!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Have spent half of the day to get it right. have others that are just to cute, and want to share them. one is of the kids playing they did not know I was taking a video thu the screen from my puter room.

Eugene, OR

Nice job on the videos Tilly!! Always fun to watch young ones at play.

Kept expecting it to pour all day today. It sure looked like it, rained some, but nothing heavy.

Boy am I having a problem voting on pics. My sis said her fingers are getting tired, mine too.

red...all I can is say is brrrrrrrrr. Nice pics.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree with you about the voting Sally. good grief I picked the wrong way for my computer and I to try to view one of the categories...oh it took forever to get through bulbs, corms, etc. can you believe that that was as bright out as it got all day! From here I always look forward to the winter solstice, because that's when things turn around!!

Eugene, OR

Yeah it was dark all day, the sun peeked out once and had a rainbow, but by the time I got my camera out and went outside it was gone! We're supposed to have a nice day coming up....Thurs, maybe. I need a dry day to pick up leaves again, the street is full again. I love my trees, I love my trees, I love.........

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

yes, you love your deciduous trees!!! If not for them, you'd be in the dark all winter! Ok.... at elast that is why I left the deciduous ones!! :-p

Eugene, OR

Now that's a good thought. Of course a lot of my neighbors just got rid of their trees all together, can't do that. The birds and the squirrels would'nt come around and that's no fun. Mom has a huge pin oak (spelling?), that's the one making the mess, that is home to a lot of birds. It blows leaves all over. I had it worked on this year, so there aren't as many leaves and I swear it's losing them early. In the spring and most of the summer I can walk out the door and get this chorus (I need sofer's way with words) of bird talk that just makes me smile.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Well, it's unfortunate that it's a pin oak, some oaks can have such fantastic fall colors. Then there's the ones that just turn brown. It's a good thing that you had it worked on for your mom, and the birds! I'll look forward to seeing pics of them in the spring. Speaking of turning brown, that's what all of my yard did in that last couple of days. Things were turning colors and falling off as they should and then when the cold rain hit a few days ago, they stopped progressing with colors and just turned soggy brown. I was sooo enjoying the great colors this year too. I don't remember getting the really cold rains until right before thanksgiving last year. I only remember that because that's when my niece and nephew were here and they're still young enough that for a very reasonable price, they will help rake. I pay them by the wheelbarrow full.

Eugene, OR

I hope they pack it down, or it could cost you a fortune.LOL

We've got several others that provide good color. Mom was enjoying watching the pin oak rain on her lawn the other day.....she said it was afternoon entertainment. I've got seven trees and mom has four more, all different kinds, except my 3 fir trees. So it's quite a variety.

My yard is saying it's almost winter too. I've been stripping everything down, but still have some to go.

Past time to get some sleep, have a good day tomorrow.

Eugene, OR

Another typical Oregon day today.....wet, dry, cloudy then a little sun. It was on the warm side thought, so I got more leaves picked up. The river is running fast and higher than usual, must be some heavy rain somewhere.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Hey Sally! At least you got some sun! My pattern went: wet, dry, fog, wet, dry, fog, repeat x 100. The river has come up quicker than I was expecting here as well. I think that it's a snow on the mountain tops being diluged with rain.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Here LOL and flowing to you. Funny
I have seen bad floods here in past years, been here 20+ not liking this so far, I have seen snow on Thanksgiving, I would rather see that , than floods. I have seen what it can do here. not liking this. makes me think of what happened in 92 I think not sure of the year, but close. it was very bad all the animals that were lost, drowned in in their own stalls and pastures. Oh please don't happen again,.
Need to go to bed , tranting sorry ^_^

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

OHhhh.... I remember that well Tilly! So far I don't have that 'eerie' (sp) feeling yet. I'm just surprised since the rain doesn't match the increase in the water, so what I mentioned above is really the only explanation. And there aren't dams above me on the river from which they could be releasing more water. This is truly natures doing.

Don't get too concerned yet Tilly or Sally. Here's a timeline in the last week of the river by my place. pay attention to the dates.

This pic was taken on 10/30. Notice the distance from waters edge to tree trunk and the rock about 10 feet to the left of the first tree, it has the grass growing on top of it and is out in the river some.

sorry that these pictures are blurry, but there's hardly enough light out to get a picture at all the last few days.

this picture was taken on 11/5, the same trees.... where's the rock ? hmmmm.....

ok, now the picture.

this pic was taken on the 11/3, check out the 'U' shape of grass/rocks that extends farthest out in the river.

computer issues. now there's a pic.

this picture was taken on 11/5. Now where's the 'U' shaped of grass!

you can also use the piles of wood as a gauge. I lost half of one of those piles this morning. By this evening I had it all (there's more than what's in just this view) moved back at least 10' and actually have some of it on top of the bank. Wahoo!

Yep, that's what's happening here too. Not concerned, it happens whenever there's water coming down. Just noticed how fast it was running today when I went to the compost pile. Makes a lovely sound.

Edited to say goodnight.

Yep, I agree. I was just surprised at the difference between the 3rd and 5th of nov. because it doesn't seemed as though it's rained THAT much. And then by today it was right up at those woodpiles. I thought that I would have at least another 2 weeks to get that wood moved. Had every plan of working in the yard today. Guess I was wrong :-p

Can't sleep Sally?

It's been overcast and rainy for a few days now. Wish we'd had some of this rain this summer during the growing season. sigh

Whew! Just finished voting on the pics. My eyes are blurry. I had to do it over the course of several days. Some categories were harder to judge than others. There are quite the photographers in DG. I am amazed.

Glad you got the wood moved and didn't lose it down the river.

Rainy and dark here in Portland as well. I am making a list of all the things I want to do that I never had the chance before I retired. Has anyone made a rag rug? Once when I was on a long flight for a business trip with a bunch of co-workers I took along my crocheting and it certainly did not do a lot for my professional image - everyone else punching away on their Blackberries. I hated that thing!
Loved the river pictures. You can absolutely see how it has risen. Interesting.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

That would be an interesting sight Portland! I don't believe that I've ever seen anyone crocheting while on a Business flight! Especially not if they were in business attire. However, I bet that people were more likely to talk to you on the plane than they were the ones 'talking' to their blackberries. Occasionally I talk to a blackberry here, but it's only when I'm hacking down an pesky bush that is trying to scratch me. :-p I've never made a rag rug, sorry.

Jan, I'm always happy to see you here! Definitely a role reversal of sorts. Judging those pics just about made me dilusional after a while. But, it's definitely worth the time and effort to see what goes on in others'
worlds.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

But I bet that you, P1, were the most relaxed and least-stressed one in the bunch. I think those activities are necessary to keep us grounded. Like gardening, or anything we do as a hobby. They round us out.
I've never done a rag rug. Is that braiding or hooking?
I'm working on a cross-stitch picture for DGD#4. That is soothing except when I make a mistake. But, if it's not too bad, I figure noone will know but me and I'm not telling, so I keep on going.

LOL, Shelly, I was picturing you on the trail with a blackberry in your hand until you said you would hack it down. Then the whole visual picture changed.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Ha ha ha I also pictured her with a blackberry in her hand walking in the woods until she said she would hack it down. :))) The electronic version is just as invasive as it twists it's tendrils around your brain. I have a friend who couldn't understand why his girlfriend was upset when he left his blackberry turned on when they were, mmm, well, you know. What kind of emergency could an architect possibly have to justify that? When I retired and left San Francisco I took a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge and threw mine in the bay. There is probably a pile of them down there.
Now I have a vision of people getting on a plane with actual blackberry bushes encasing them in living cages. They file one by one into the plane and can barely turn their heads to the left or right to see the view because the twisting bushes are allowing them to face only straight ahead, therefore keeping them on a narrow path to the finish.
What does it mean when it says "This message was edited..." at the end of some entries? Who is editing?

I am positive there must be a HUGE pile of those things down under the bay. Too funny! I will never get on a plane again w/o thinking about the vines tendriling ( is that a word?) about.

OOPS, we posted at the same time so I deleted my explanation.

Jan, I know what you mean about cross stitch. Mom should take a picture of the tiger I made her and post it; the tiger came out great, as long as you don’t look at the pattern.

Eugene, OR

When I traveled for work, sometimes international (looooong flights) I always took needlework with me. The crew always waited to see my latest project. Surprised me the guys would be that interested in cross stitch. I met some of the nicest people in airports because of it.

rc...I knew what kind of blackberry you meant when you said you talked to it. But now I'll have the picture Jan and Portland drew up in my head every time someone mentions blackberries.

Haven't been able to finish the voting yet, my eyes get tired too. Want to do everyone justice, so I'm taking it slow.
I braided a rug years ago, those things are so neat and last forever. I bought a gadget to cut the material a while back, thinking I would make another one, but haven't gotten it to the top of the list yet LOL

Dry today, so of course we had to go to town, didn't get to work in the yard. Couldn't believe it got up to 66. We bought what we need to put hand rails on the deck, next dry day my neighbor is going to help me put them up.
