The view must have been spectacular.
I can't believe the poultry forum beat us.
DH's dream is to go to Alaska, by road. I loved flying. My instructor was trying to compliment me I guess, by saying that I flew like a man. I really wasn't sure what he meant.. I have memories, of him pulling the throttle just after take-off as a training exercise, to get you to think where you are going to land in an emergency. I lined up perfectly at a field - where there were pickers harvesting some crop. The looks on their faces were priceless. Then, he kicked in the throttle and off we went. He also tried to get me lost when we were night-flying, but I have a pretty good sense of direction and told him exactly where we were. The thing I disliked the most was talking on the radio with an airport tower. I tried to avoid those fields as much as I could. lol
DH and a neighbor got a 1939 Aeronca (sp) chief. Overhead wing, very cramped, no radio, no fuel gauge, except for a wire in a cork. Wooden frame. They took it out of commission to rebuild it. Had most of the struts built, then neighbor started a business, so had no time. They sold it in pieces for more than they paid $2500.00 The guy put it together and it is flying (last I knew) They went and saw it. It had 85 horsepower. On a windy day, cars would go faster. lol
OMG, little bitty planes. I feel like hiding under my desk immediately. SQUEAL!!!!
Thanks for thanking Kelly for his service. He did 7 years in. First gulf and also East German border duty. I think he was very brave. I would have been useless on that sort of thing. Us Canadians are good at the diplomatic peace-keeping stuff.
Oh, and Ninja Dahlianut - I call them pee-cans.
Key lime pie is my 2nd favourite, after Pee-can pie.
I was born and raised in S. FL and spent lots of time in the Keys. We had Key limes in our backyard. I then married and moved south (S. FL is not south), where I got the goods on "peh-can' pie (homemade crust, of course). I do get nauseous and start to moan at the least little incline though.
Jan, I am awed by your skills. What we learn about each other here, yes? Thanks Dusty for the amazing photo and history. WOW! Regarding kim chee...I thought it went with everything (?) There is a sizable Korean community in Atlanta and the local Asian market has kim chee ladies pickling away day and night! I have grown Asian mustard like crazy for the cause myself!
Laurel
That plane has my initials on it!
Too funny! Did they steal it???
It seems my whole family was in the military.
My uncle was a pilot in the army in WWII, granddad in the army during WWI, everyone else(dad, brothers, sister, brother-in-law) was in the Navy. My dad patrolled the Caribbean during WWII(poor guy). My hubby's uncle was in the army air corps during WWII and then in the air force for hte Korean War.
I am very late to this thread but I could not believe how little chatting had been going on in the NE forum. Maybe this thread will set things straight!

oh your lucky i wish it snowed were i am i have only seen snow once and it wasnt even falling just on the ground stupid hot climate over here
FlowerJen - those are cool pics of the planes - even though they scare me! Your family must be very proud of the history of service they have. What a great sacrifice.
Jen .. We had an airshow here in Sept...Most of those planes were here about 2 miles from my house as well..We have a resident B-29, B-52 and the infamous B-17 as well as the Grimes Flying Laboratory...I live right parallel to the airstrip Grimes Field out here in the country...
My first and last plane was a 1949 Beech Bonanza...Got it when I was 16 and sold it in 1998...I started flying when I was not quite 13 yrs old...I am rated both single and multi engine as well as Rotor...My first husband was a pilot in the Korean War, and he got me certified on Rotors, long before I ever enlisted and went to Vietnam...He owned his own Flight School in Chicago...My crews let me fly them whenever we were out and away from prying eyes, on our down time so I could log hours and stay current...It came in handy a couple of times when some of my crew was injured by groundfire...A dear friend of mine, now a General retired, taught me how to fly Chinnooks over there...;-) I would rather fly than eat, and I miss it...
General ChickenHead
Oh, I'd love to fly in a copter.
Once (don't tell anybody) many moons ago, before regulations were so strict, we were flying from the old Colts Neck airport in NJ. up to CT. and to avoid Kennedy and Newark airport flight patterns we stayed low and went around the restricted airspace and actually flew under the Verrazano Bridge. That was pretty cool, but would never do something like that today.
Where was the air show Jen?
Trenton Airport.
McGuire Airforce Base is about 15/20 mins from here so we always get some really neat planes and copters flying over us.
Looks like the Chicken Heads beat ya again!! And we even came over here to help!!! LOL
lucky charm_l You don't want to have to shovel snow. It does do a good job of insulating the flower beds agaist cold.
