Excellent, Ninja Dahlianut! You're our first Ninja!
I can't believe the poultry forum beat us.
shhhhhh crestedchik, wink, wink, nudge, nudge
I'm not even gonna tell you want MS costs here. I screamed when I went to buy it the first time.
Sherrie, you reminded me of a nonrelated story - My mom is Polish, so of course all us kids are too. My niece was talking with me and a few of my sisters, and someone said how I'm the only different one. She blurts out "Aunt Debbie's not Polish?" They're all blondes and I'm brunette.
We still laugh about it 20 years later.
That's funny, Deb!
Crestedchic, Polish crested are sweet and gentle (and the easy to handle) not to mention that they are beautiful. Is there one crested variety that's best? I think I would need them all. I lurk on the poultry forum. The coolest eggheads are there.:). If I could be at our country house all the time, I'd have lots of crested. Love them so much, I'm thinking of buying and boarding some at a friend's farm.

I wish my hair did that. They really are cute. Loved the question ' are they hardy in zone 3a' --- ever the gardener. lol
Laurel, then you could visit them often. What fun!!
So many fun and amazing chickens. I love black Cochins too. They have feathers down their legs and all over their feet, so they look like they are wearing funky house slippers. http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/poultry/chickens/cochin/black.htm. I am going to have those with my cresteds too. In the meantime, I have been sharing veggies for eggs by the dozens from a friend (and fellow DGer) all summer. They have amazing chickens and the six dozen eggs a month we get in exchange for veggies has worked out for both of us. Gotta love those chickens.

What a great thread this turned into!!!!
Hey Frans (if you ever come back) where in Jersey are you from?
Some cool looking chicks y'all have.
Since a few are having fun with the chicken chatter I thought I'd expand on the photo above. The one with the feathery feet is a black Cochin, the horizontal, black and whites are Barred Rocks (also known as Plymouth Barre Rocks), a popular, cold weather, north American breed. The tan are buff Orpingtons. http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGK/Orps/BRKOrps.html All lay brown eggs.
Chickens are omnivores, so we can bring all our "less than perfect" produce (read anything that's not moldy) and refrigerator "over the hill" leftovers and the chickens will spit eggs like crazy!
Now I don't know anybody that has "over the hill" leftovers in the frig except for me. Sure wish there were chickens nearby then. lol
I think as a kid, the only chickens we had were red. There really are some beautiful ones. I love the fuzzy slippers on the Cochin.
and now you ll know why the poultry forum was the cluckiest in town.. LOL we can chatter! But we do have oh so much to say.
flowerjen, I am originaly from east orange.. but nutley, plainfield, toms river.. pick a spot and there i'd be..
And I HAD to go outside for awhile and take care of my critters.. and try to plant a few stray potted items that need in the ground before we freeze.. tomorrow I need to mow.. with as fast as the chill is coming in, it may just be for the last time this year.
But if any lurkers came to visit, you might have seen I went to an auction this week and ended up with a few new animals so it has messed up my schedule.. and my computer/gossip time..
I find it amazing how much you all know about chickens... keep up the good chatter.. you WILL beat us next week!!
Woops. Almost forgot. You don't get counted if you just lurk.
So here's my post.
Cluck. Cluck. Cluck/
Great posts! Did you all know that there are some types of chickens that lay blue/green colored eggs? They look the same on the inside but are pale pastel shades of blue and green on the shells. Mostly Ameraucana or Araucana hens. They are descendents of a South American breed of chicken that lays blue eggs. They are too cool! And pretty eggs too!
Yes, of course. Doesn't everyone know that any Araucana or Araucana crosses lay blue/green eggs. Geesh, do you think we're sleeping under a...roost ladder? lol.
Just hope you know I'm kidding, but not about my love of chickens. I am so jealous if you have chickens.
