I can't believe the poultry forum beat us.

This has been a pleasure to meet some new(to me) DGers. It has brought back memories of butchering birds on the farm when I grew up.

My first recollection of a wild turkey was when I was about 4 and saw one in the woods and told my Dad to look at the BIG chicken.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Wow! Beautiful iridescence on those turkey feathers, and very nice goose too!

(Zone 7b)

Hello Jan 23 we have a little in common "sort of" my birthday is Jan 23.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I always think of grouse when we talk about wild turkeys. When I lived in the NWT we would go fly-out fishing. At one pit-stop at an island I was surprised by these birds walking right up to and around me like I wasn't there. I'd never seen grouse before and didn't know what they were. I was so excited I called them turkey-chickens back at the boat to the GREAT amusement of everyone else. I still call them turkey-chickens to this day.

Actually, I didn't have to mow the lawn in the back when I had the goose. And, yes .... that is Esmirelda. Kept the grass clipped and weed free, actually.

I believe it is still illegal to keep any "livestock" within (the / my) city limits, but I guess that's only if you get caught ...... none of my neighbors "turned me in," and right next door is a police officer (now retired).

Of course, when I lugged (and she WAS heavy) her home, dad insisted "the GOOSE GOES TOMORROW!!"

He always said that whenever we brought another animal around.

Well, we all laughed hard when dad was the only one home and the neighbor called saying "I think your goose is waddlin' down the street!!" He did coral it back into the yard.

"Well, I'd hate to have it be MY fault if something happened to YOUR 'darned' goose!!" he complained.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Lol, Harmony, I'll try to remember on Jan 23. However the 23 is the date, but in Nov. The name is Jan. We do have a lot in common - we love DG.

Have you been able to get the vaccine yet?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Dad's are funny that way. I wanted a kitten when I was little and my Dad complained about that d**n cat all the time. However, he used to talk to it and pet it when he thought no one could hear.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Too funny, willieB. I have a picture in my head of your dad corralling Esmirelda.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Grumpy, old softie, tain't it the trute.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OMG the chicken folks have MPs too!!!! o dear.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

He did not "appear" happy about the situation, at all!

I bet he was laughing as he tried getting her back home.

Catscan: too funny!

So you know i have been waiting on my vaccine.
Yes it will be here early next week thanks for asking I've had a very hard time with the wet pox.
I'm going to vaccinate for my chicks I'm afraid it will spread to them the older one's can get over it but it would probably kill the chicks.

Major Harmony must leave and report back to base camp commanders orders.

Major Harmony "SALUTE" over and out!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Uncle Lee had an "Egg Farm" .... "Best of the Nesters" I think was the slogan.

As kids, our favorite place was the "red room," where all the new hatchlings were kept.

I'd be anxious waiting for the vaccine, too ..... fingers crossed they arrive early, Harmony.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I should NOT be charged with dereliction of duty. How can I be on duty with my incubator when I'm at work! This is most unfair! I protest. I threaten that I will rewrite the "Celebratory Foods Manual" for use at Hatchings. Pppppbbbbtttt!!

Commander Moxon is most displeased.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

There's a 'Celebratory Foods Manual'???? Is chocolate involved???? I definitely need to get chickens if this is the case.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Yes, it's called "Celebratory Foods and Their Correct Management during Hatching Missions" and Catscan wrote it and she is very strict about it. There are to be no cupcakes because she had a mutiny with cupcakes and there was a carpet incident. Banana Cream Pies are under some questionable circumstances right now. However, cinnamon buns are allowed, as are various sorts of cookies. Chocolate is always allowed.

More discussion about it appears about halfway through this thread, which is my current hatch.

Gloria so very beautiful, I'd love to have that picture!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Yupper. I just knew it. Went to the Commander's thread and there was the cutest little tiny chick with bad hair. Those chicken folks sure know how to tease and now there is also mention of mmmmmm pe-cahn pie (I just learned that is the correct spelling). Is maple syrup in the 'NE Food Manual'? Definitely a one-up on pe-cahns IMHO.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Outstanding pic gloria. Quick like a bunny enter it in the photo contest!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Awww. Dahlianut - you visited the thread and didn't even post?!

I shall enter maple syrup into the manual. Excellent point. We love excellent points.

Congratulations, you are now promoted to Sergeant Dahlianut and are permitted to join in hatching festivities. I will inform the thread. Alternatively, if you prefer, you can be Secret Agent Dahlianut, in order to better protect your identity.

Cool Polish!

Cool!

Greensboro, AL

No the turkey photos aren't mine. The gobblers are from Zion National Park and the hens are from NTHA - the National Turkey Hunter's Association.

Wow - Neat hairdoo!

Greensboro, AL

Those crested biddies are wonderful.

I think you can make pecan pie with maple syrup. Down here they use cane syrup because maple syrup is hard to find.

Up here you can go buy it on the side roads.... Get someone to buy you some and ship it.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

WHOOO HOOO bad hair! That's the kind I will get. Are they hardy in zone 3a? CMoxon I'm poofing with pride (blush) that you asked my to join the chicken troops. Can I be Ninja Dahlianut please? I'm known for my ninja skills when protecting my seed fridge

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

That's what I forgot to buy this past weekend!

Greensboro, AL

My neighbor's back home (Michigan) make it but its hard to get my sister to bring me some when she comes down.

I was a sap spieler when I was a kid.

If you find it the price tag is probably way up there also.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)
