A Brugs Life My Back Yard Monster Peach Versi

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Here is my little baby, all nestled in her corner. sheltered by sweet pea, honeysuckle, phlox, and seedlings of Zinnia, marigolds, and some Monarda for company. I had no idea what I planted, I just knew it had to have a Special spot. Here she is back then...

and then she grew a little bit, since there wasn't too much shade..

and then, I forgot about her.... I had this tree, blocking my view, this tree the object of my adornment, a black locust tree , that brought hundreds of bees every summer with its' sweet blooms above us..

She was beautiful tree that let me plant anything I wanted around her, to grow up her beautiful trunk, colouring her graceful feet under the earth..

Of course I never saw the corner where she was, unless I went for a stroll around the yard.. inspecting and noticing all the new green, and then the tree got sick.. I was heart broken, my clematis that was two years old had three blooms on her, we had to cut her down and out of the ground.. I cried and hugged her goodbye, and stood by and sadly watched her go to her death...

Out to the front her limbs were dragged, and with the last haul off she went... captive in a claw..

and then the Corner, where the Brug was plain as she could be, stood out for all the world to see...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

And she grew and Basked in the sun, still not getting attention from One ( me)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

In May she blended in with the green, making it harder to be seen , enjoying the sun, the wind and the rain, an occasional glance from me she gained..

The sweet pea in bloom, the honeysuckle ripens, the trumpet flower trys to wake up,
the purple phlox just planted beside her, gives her company in her warm spot.

The first part of june without the big tree, woke up everything back in her corner, including me.. I started noticing the odd broad leaves, and decided she really wasn't a weed, I almost pulled her, not recognizing the poor brug thing, yet I let her go as I do with most everything.. I really could see that corner of mine, I was still in mourning , of a tree so kind, I could see all the bareness, where the tree once stood, it made me blind and not willing to look to the little brug....not knowing the happiness to come along

Then the end of June brought a pretty site with everything filling out, but I still did not not notice her alone, the other flowers and plants around me were keeping me pleased..

As the Back Corner started coming alive , with burst of vibrant colours, I ventured out to see what was new, still ignoring my soon to be most important flower...

She never wilted, she never turned yellow, never got a bite on the nose, she just kept on growing and growing, keeping her happy pose...adorned by the stately gay feather liatris, neighbored by the zinnia, flashes of vibrant red and fuschia, thanks to the monarda... gave her a really pretty stage, to unfold her beauty for all.. I kept wondering what she was
and began to be in awe..

Aha, Deb, well done!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

She grew , she flourished, she started to reach even harder, for the others around her were getting tall , and she had to stay in the middle of it all, she the queen, the strongest one, she fought the vines , the stems ,and the twigs, of pink, and gold and yellow honeysuckle and red trumpet vine and pretty sweet peas, all fighting to get the same bit of sun..and soon the morning glories were to come..

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

the sweetpea welcomed her warmly

The trumpet vine tried to bully, but I kept watch over my little brug, still wondering what she was.. giving much more attention to the things around her...

The flowers were blooming, all around the yard, spring nearing its end, when i saw how tall she was, I decided to inquire within, I dug out my reciepts, looked her up on my ebay, sure enough there she was, A Little Peach Versi,
won and owned by little insignificant me, all forgotten because of a tree.. I found her beauty to come breathtaking, and now I am waiting for the buds into blooms... She taunts me ,, she scares me, I see her fate..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

and here she is out lasting the rest, everything around her is fading away, while she and the glories still looking their best, waiting for end of summer so near

She taunts me with a bud and then two, everyday I go out to see, yet still she ignores me like I ignored her, giving back to me what I gave to her.. indifference with some kind of inquiring concern, oh, I can wait untill she returns.. she says as I walk away, taking pictures all around her..you will be back I know for sure, she waves her leaves to me..

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

she calls me to come to her today, I go out and hold my breath... but wait is that a split I see? I peek, I touch and see...
I stroke her broad leave with a gentle touch, Forgive me please, I beg//ii croon to her while touching her beautiful bud, telling her how beautiful she is to me.. How did I know.. you were hidden all along, out of site and mind, behind that favorite tree I miss, and now you're my treasured find. Come open up your bud to a bloom, I beg you, please be swift, for fall is almost upon us and I fear, I will have a heartbreak... as Jack Frost is so near, to coming into my little heaven and taking you from me, I'll risk the cutting down of your crown, and bring you in with me. I bundle up your feet, keep them warm all thru the cold.. And then I will rejoin the two... you the new and you the old.. hang in there little Peach Versi, for I want to see if it is true, that your blooms will look like little skirts ...all up in a swirl..

Me too Deb, brug blooms are so love lovely and your plant looks great

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

This DG place is very special to me, I have learned alot. I begin to think I know it all, and then I learn some more. As long as I am learning, how to care for and love my Brugs, that and the new friends I am sharing with, mean the world to me. Thank You so very much, all of you.! ( my tree in April, before the Killing of it)

Great story Debra, and some fantastic pix too.

How sweet! Versi's are tough and seem to withstand more cold than others. If I were you, I'd decorate her with Christmas lights when the frost comes just to get see her & smell her blooms--then cut her...you've waited so long! Good luck!

October 11th, Saturday morning up close...I see a hole of some sort.. I keep trying to peek in , I felt it, there is something in there, but she won't come out.. is she eaten by an invasive bug? Is therre A WORM inside her lovely budding body? My curiosity and impatience overwhelms me.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

went back out to the cold rainey wet backyard to inspect her.. her ends are split, she looks like she is too cold to step out! LOL Brrrrrr I know I am...

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Have hopes!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I can hardly wait! That hole is scarey!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

She looks all happy out in the cold, a little rained on, but not too soaked.. I caught a peek inside her tip. She is all curled and ready I think..

The Leaves are not turning as quick as I'd like, i think the rain we have had has kept the colours from coming, but I still have alot of Fall Beauty.. all around..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I randomly stroll in awe of the scene, me and my Duke dog, checking each thing.. inspecting the progress, feeling the pods, and plucking the seeds, they are clenched in my hands, while I'm listening .... the birds, the wind and the trees, all of them telling me, hurry up.. please!

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I pluck at the 4o'clocks, all fat and ripe...A pink one for Linda, a salmon one for Corey, a handful of mixed colours for Sue, I pick and cherish each prize I grab at, not thinking to keep them sorted out at all, I see a bright colour and immediately forget, the task I went out to do, for the color is bright and warm and gay, making the coldness and dampness feel another way.. warm and hot and bright and gold! Thats what my marigolds let me behold!
