Bottle garden

Has anyone here had experience with bottle gardens? They seem so pretty and interesting!

I love planting terrariums. I have quite a few different sizes of glass jars and vases with lids that are planted up. I have an old, heavy 5gal glass bottle (from the 70's) that I use as a terrarium but I cheated and had a glass co. cut a large hole in the back for easy accessibility. Many years ago I planted a bottle with a long neck but it's awfully difficult trying to find tools to stick down to work in the soil and the neck has to be wide enough to get the plant into the bottle.

We have a terrarium forum here on DG: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/terrariums/all/ that you might like to check out.

Beautiful!! What are you gowing in there? I have some fittonia and microcoelum and I have been thinking about using the nice bottle my aunt gave me, it is tinted light green though and i wouldn't be able to see the pink of the fittonia.
How much maintance do you have to do on yours?

I have no maintenance on mine unless plants get too large and then I just pull them out and replace them with something smaller. The jars with the lids I have not watered in many months. With the lids on the moisture stays built up enough that I don't have to water. The 10 gal aquarium I put a little bit of water every few months because it does seem to dry out a little bit with the light on about 12 hours a day. Some of the glass containers have fittonia, begonia, small ferns. One has just one anthurium in it. The ten gallon tank has a mishmash of a lot of different things, fittonia, cryptanthus, fern, some sort of trailing plant. I have just always loved planting in glass.

My most recent one is a container I found a couple of months ago for $15 (originally marked $79) at a furniture store that was going out of business. I just happened to be in there with a friend of mine who was looking for something. I walked around looking at accessories and found this heavy glass container with the lid and thought it would make a great terrarium! The heavy glass jar sits down inside the base.

Thanks! I love all plants and even have a couple of the smallest plants known ... called micro miniature sinningia's. They do really well in terrariums. I have one planted in a jar with a lid and another planted in a little wine glass that I put saran wrap over. These sit on a plant stand under lights.
