October Blooms, Part 2

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Last one for the night. I don't even know her name. Never have I grown these tiny ones but am loving it! They are in wine glasses.

I have been considering entering something in the show in May . . . I was reading the bylaws on the way to work this morning . . . from what I understand, members of the club are required to enter 4 plants in each show they host . . . will verify that with Ken tomorrow when I go to Boerne . . . so I may not have a choice . . . but I HAVE been considering it, and have a few plants in mind . . . Chilly Willy being one for the mini category . . . but wouldn't you know! I was looking at it last night, thinking "finally, no more suckers!" when what do I find? A nice fat one! Oi!

Yes, Ember Lace is supposed to be pink AND green, not just green!

Oh, pretty chimera! Have you ever seen a yukako/rebekah chimera sport? I saw one this afternoon in an earlier avsa mag. from this year, and would love to have one, IF I can find it!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I heard about it but haven't seen it. Bummer............I am sending a picture of my Ember Lace to LL tonight.............................you must enter..............you can even enter in the same category if you want.................they can't tell you what and where to enter..........if you have 4 great semi minis, enter them.....................In fact, there is a category I think where you enter 3 different of the same category...........(or shall I say there is a prize for that)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Well, I DO have one semi-mini that I would like to enter . . . it just doesn't seem big enough! I'm hoping that the next 7 months will give it a chance to grow a bit!

I'm also hoping to get a few pointers/ideas from the show/sale in Corpus . . .

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I won't have any avs for sure! Don't even have but a few growing. But, I have lots of other things like baskets of all kinds of nematanthus, columnea, lipstick baksets and some other really neat things. One is a basket of Codanthes devosiana 'Paula' that has taken me 11/2 years to grow this big and bloom!

This was taken several months ago...........but she is really growing now............
I am going to watch tv and go to bed.............nice visiting with you!

Well, just got back from Boerne. "I" walked away with what I had intended to get - potting mix, a Christmas Dream AV, and another Vampire's Kiss strep.

At work, they are starting in to the annual United Way campaign . . . one of the things they do is a Silent Auction on items from the different departments. My department couldn't make up their minds, so we are doing a half Halloween basket, half Christmas basket. I had thought - Oh, I have the Vampire's Kiss strep at home, all I need to do is get something Christmas-y. Of course, I hadn't counted on killing the Vampire's Kiss (and NO, you really don't need a stake thru the heart!), so was hoping - and got lucky - that they had one! The colors are even similar (and gosh darn it, I think a leaf or two will need to be trimmed from Christmas Dream before I take it into work!)

You know I am jealous that Ken had streps! Did he have a lot of those from Lyons for sale?????????

BEahive................pretty pictures to share...........thanks and great looking!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I went to Walmart of all places to do my grocery shopping because Lowe's is across the street. The groceries were great and I just HAD to stop by Lowe's before coming home. Here is a Better Grow dendrobium. You can't see but the light color in the bloom has a green tint to it.

You know, I think he had less streps this time than last time . . . you know what he does have now, though? 2 shelves of mini-plants for terrariums, etc! Those things are so cute!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Such a pretty orchid, Gail. A lovely unexpected fun prize...
BeaHive - beautiful pics! Thanks for posting.
Syrumani - Is Ken's close to where you live?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I know where ken is and I am jealous. She is only a 30 minute drive out of San Antonio on I10 going to west Texas.

Goldleaf, do you like orchids? I am in love with them because they are so easy to grow. I had no earthly idea they were such a piece of cake in getting blooms and new growth.

South, TX

Gail, are you going to the meeting tonight? I am hoping someone will have a leaf of Pink Patches!

I have a rooted leaf of Apache Sunset. Just thought I would do that instead of cutting a leaf. Glenda was wanting a leaf of Sunlit Sugar Plum so I am giving her a rooted leaf with some tiny ears.

I hope to get a nap in a minute so I will feel good tonight. I have everything ready to go.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sally, I have so many I have put down about 10 and I will give you a leaf cup when she starts having babies..............I am not going tonight.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

A few new babies blooming today.

Yes, I'd say from my house Ken is about 35-40 minutes away . . . I'm thinking of taking DH to Seguin in two weeks . . . I want to get that curly green plant thing . . . would go this next weekend, but we're going to Fredricksburg to the L.S. Gourd Festival.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

are you talking about a hoya maybe that twines itself around ....I will take a picture outside and see if this is right.

Syrumani, you got so excited about going to Seguin, you didn't say, "Oh, Gail, aren't your streps pretty?"..............teasing of course.

South, TX

Thanks Gail! I am sorry I won't see you tonight.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

AT least I have an appointment on Oct. 31 for my first visit to get teeth back. And I will get to see my grandchildren all dressed up for Halloween. You all have a great time. I understand that you are going to get to see the video of The Pittman Way of Growing. That ought to be an awesome meeting. Tell Jackie we can mail our leaves to each other (she wants wasp leaves and we are trading)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Gail, your blooms are so pretty. I like Fancy Pants especially.
BTW, your hoya is carnosa compacta varigated. It is one of the slow growing hoyas. Check it often for mealie bugs. They hide in the curled up folded leaves. I water mine with Bayer Advance Tree and Shrub twice a year (2 tablespoons to a gallon of water).

(Zone 1)

Gail, if Syru isn't talking about the Hoya compacta (Hindu Rope Hoya) maybe she is talking about that Epi you posted a photo of awhile back? That was a twisty, curvy one, a really cool looking plant!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail! I got so caught up in thoughts of going to Seguin, that I forgot to say how GREAT your streps look! wink

I really DO like Fancy Pants! I think the one you gave me is finally starting to have a little nub growing . . . possibly a future leaf or bud . . .

No, it's not a hoya that I want to get in Seguin (the Hoya lucanosa I got at HEB a few months ago is getting a bloom bunch on it!). This plant literally looked like a dozen spaghetti noodles dyed green and twisted into spirals. Maybe after the kids get in bed, I can try to duplicate what it is I'm talking about . . .

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am dying to know what it looks like and what it is. Lin is the best researcher we have but we don't have much to go on yet ........smiling........

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

OMG, Lin! That second link pretty much nails it! Now I don't have to finish boiling water, to soften the linguini so I could twirl it around something until it was dry, then get a green marker to color it!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

What a cool plant! How did I miss that when I was there. The good part of having no teeth right now is that every appointment from now on I will be going by or stopping by on the way home in Seguin.
