We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/908735/
I will start this thread off with . . . Emily!
October Blooms, Part 2
Oh! I am so sentimental about Iced Pink Flamingo............I even grew her from seed once..................some of the babies were as beautiful as yours and some I had to dispose of like it is anytime we grow from seed. Yours is really nice!!!!!!
I don't have Spiritual Corridor blooming right now but I have to have a picture on the bloom thread (lol)
Hi All,
I want to say the pictures are just wonderful... I killed 4 episcia's this past week.. I over watered them... Oh well.. I am going to send a few to Lin so she can keep them alive...LOL
Lin, when I first came here you sent me a beautiful varigated AV... Well I kept here alive for a long time.. She even bloomed.. Then something went on in our home and lord I can't remembe what as seem everyweek is something new...Well she started to die... Where I kill Av's most of the time I can grow a mean leaf...LOL So now I have a beautiful young Av and she is growing great...LOL
I will try to get some pictures posted by the weekend... Hugs to everyone and keep those pictures coming...
Hugs,
Susan
LOL Susan, At one time I had @75 AV's, now I have none, zero, zip, zilch, nada! I just find them a bit too fussy for me ... well that many anyway. ^_^ I may try a couple again sometime in the future but I don't want to get carried away. I prefer plants that aren't so needy, like all of my regular old house plants that can stay out on my deck! My two stands now have my few Chiritas and Episcia's and a couple of the mini Sinningia's.
I'm glad you were able to put down a leaf from that variegated AV and now have a new plant! I think you've not only become addicted to AV's but most all Gessies since I've seen photo's of your beautiful Streps too, and you are doing a great job of growing!
Susan - which episcia's didn't make it? The "unknown" cutting you sent me is blooming now . . . you were right - it does bloom pretty! Are you going to give up on episcia's, since you're sending the rest to Lin?
You know what I find to be fussy? Streps. I just can't find a "middle ground". Either there's too much water or not enough water.
Gail, very nice H. ds-70 and lacunosa! They both have blooms with wonderful fragrance and I know you will love them! I bet you are saying "Let the propagating begin"!
That Nematanthus Tropicana is Gorgeous! One very pretty plant! I also love that Champagne Jam ... I rec'd cuttings of that one in a trade last month but I killed them, along with a few begonia cuttings. I am sometimes not good with cuttings. I'm not sure what my problem is, sometimes I can root things so easily, other times they seem to die when I look at them!
:(
Question? Is there an AV site with photos & names as with streps? what I want to know is which AV have BIG flowers!
Here's the AVSA website showing pictures from A to Z: http://www.avsa.org/Photographs.asp
Ahhhh Kivit--do you feel that little bug beginning to bite? ^_^ I think I have just been bitten by the Kohleria bug--having grown up as a freckle faced child-- I have a weakness for things with spotted "faces"--LOL
Tommie
The biggest blooms I have ever grown on an african violet was a Russian one and I have to find the name in my pictures..........be back...........
Kivit.........be sure and tell if your leaves are dead when you get them......I have never put wet tissue paper on the ends..........plus I ordered these little boxes thinking they would be so good to send leaves in...........they are for videos so I threw all 20 of them in the big trash (the minimum cost is 4.80). Wonder who would even use those.........
be back when I find the picture and the name.
thx gail!
The best way to learn is to join a local club, subscribe to AVSA, get the magazine, order First Class to upload on your computer and hang around here on the AV forum!
There are even lists of the top 25 avs for the year (everyone votes for their favorites) and lots of good articles showing which avs won what at the various shows.
I always feel that I have to leave a picture when I post.
Newtown Shared Venture
Love everyone's blooms. The pictures are georgeous. I have to shut down computer. The sky is rumbling and we're expecting thunderstorms again this evening. It's been raining on and off all day today. It reminds me of when I lived up north. Ot Oh gotta go. that was a big one. Bye
what I was impressed by was an AV named Rhapsodie in White! The bloom is almost as wide as a person's hand! Bigger than strep blooms1
Eileen, We've had wind and rain off and on all day here too but thank goodness no thunder and lightning! Hey! I saw on the news that humongous python or boa constrictor snake that lady had in her yard! Yikes! That was so scary ... just watching it on t.v. news gave me the creeps. That snake was really scary ... hissing and trying to strike the cameraman! It said the snake weighed more than the cop who arrived on scene!
kivit: I agree, Rhapsodie in White is gorgeous! http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/RhapsodyinWhiteLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/RhapsodyinWhiteLrg.jpg%23
I subscribed to AVSA & the gessie Society about 2 weeks ago. have been watching the mail fro a magazine!
Unfortuneately, we live in the boonies. Roanoke is the closest city & airport, but that is 1 1/2 hours away!
both Richmond VA & DC are 5 plus hours. Perhaps I should look to Charlotte, nc or something in TN.
Have another question. I had a start to bloom and I had no idea what is was. I have been watching it for a month now. It is sort of blue with a yellow throat. Today, another of the same kind bloomed as well. Same blue with a yellow throat but with the pink fantasy=Bristol's Party Girl!
Soo.... my question is, does every fantasy strep, like, revert? The first plant has a second bloom with pink! Puts a new meaning to "fantasy"! i can "fantasize that my
fantasy streps will have fantasy! or not!
Hmmmm! Did that make sense?
Hi there;
some of the fantasy do revert, especially if they are neglected at all.i have had violets, streps both do the same thing.so when you get one that has fantasy, you should take cuttings form it to be sure you will continue to have fantasy.
mrsbonnie
LOL..Kivit..I can relate..i have one Fancy Pants Strep that reverted to solid pink after its 3rd bloom spurt..thought that was odd..I have heard that certain fantasy streps are pretty unstable and tend to revert..so far only one of mine has..
Gail..Awesome Blooms as Always!!
Nic..pretty episcia...
Susan..don't feel all alone..lol..I have killed more episcias than I care to admit..when I 1st started with av's I hated them..lol..now i love them ..thanks to Nic I am trying episcias again with great luck so far...
i got 1 episcia, from Rob's violets when I orderd my first strep. It was pink dreams. The foliage was beautiful. When I unwrapped it, it had a card saying, no draughts, no dry air, no overwatering. Hmmm! well I put that tiny little star (2 small leaves) into a large brandy snifter. It sat there for months. pretty, yes, but so small. Then it began to make leaves and send out these little runner thingys that had baby leaves at the end. I weighted down a few or these and then I had babies. started sharing with my friends. then it bloomed! What a beauty! During the summer, i had my plants on the deck. the dogs knocked the cover on the snifter to one side, but only a crack so, i didnt notice. rained hard that night. Next morning my beautiful plant was literally drowned!
Hadnt even saved a baby for myself! Not even a picture! I was so proud of that plant! Well, pride goeth before a fall!
So that's my episcia story.
Well, I love anything pink so I had to go look up Pink Dreams! Wow! What a beautiful Episcia ... I adore that foliage! To me when the foliage is that pretty, I don't really care about blooms: http://www.gesneriads.ca/episc29.htm
Ever more, beauties, Gail....SpinArt always blows me away..
kivit - the avsa magazine comes out every 2 months, So, it starts with Jan/Feb and so on. Your first issue should be the Nov/Dec one. I can understand how badly you felt about the Pink Dreams episcia. The good thing is, you can always get another. I do like the pink variegated ones.
mrsbonnie and cedarnest are right about fantasies. If important to them, some growers when they have a good fantasy violet will propagate them like a chimera so they continue to have that original plant's characteristics. Putting down leaf cuttings from a fantasy doesn't always gaurantee the babies will all be fantasy...some might not be or some might not be as good as the mother plant. Fantasy can be highly variable.
I remember one time painstakingly growing what was supposed to be a fantasy violet from a leaf cutting of a variety I wanted so badly and wasn't easy to get. I pampered it, kept it disbudded, etc. Then I allowed it to bloom which I thought would be the grande finale and guess what? Not one speck of fantasy. I should have let it bloom one stalk while growing it out to see if it was going to be right.
This is a violet I would like to find...Chiffon Maritime. Will someone with FC2 look it up please?
Chiffon Maritime Variegated (7932) 10/04/1993 (L. Neumann/J. Hill) Semidouble bright blue/darker eye, thin white frilled edge. Crown variegated green, cream and pink, plain, quilted/red back. Standard
She does have a crown variegated afterall..............what a pretty one. Will keep my eyes out where ever I go. I am going to look at Jo's Violets here in Texas and the one in San Antonio. Nichole sent his list of violets. I have to go back and find the pdf. I should have saved it then.
Oooh, Chiffon Maritime is wonderful! Love that blue and the foliage is amazing! I went to AVSA and didn't find that one but there was a listing for Chiffon Masquerade: http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/ChiffonMasqueradeLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/ChiffonMasqueradeLrg.jpg%23
While googling I found some beauties: http://www.pjjphotography.info/PJJAfricanVioletShows.htm I can see myself getting the AV "bug" again!
Thanks for FC2 lookup, Gail. 1993...it's been around for a while and I have never heard of it. So, is this a Texas one? If you can ever find it, that would be awesome. Do you know Joan Hill?
Lin, that last link you posted is where I saw it and got the photo. It caught my eye as unusual...stood out. I want to say how nice you are and always so helpful to everyone.
kivit - I joined the AVSA in mid-August, and did not get my member number in the mail until the weekend after Labor Day. I have yet to get my first subscription magazine . . . I think I joined too late in the month to make the September/October magazine, so will look forward to the November/December one. I'm making a trip to the HCAV&N this weekend, so I will see if they have a copy of the most recent.
I did get my first class last week, though . . . you can ask Gail . . . I was excited! I told her just today that I need a laptop to put it on, though - 'cause I can't load it on my pc at work, so I go thru withdrawals! I even asked her to look up AV's for me!
Was "voted in" at the AV club meeting tonite . . . that was exciting. Won a pair of Blackberry Jam leaves in the raffle . . . have them sitting in plant water for now . . .
YOu are kidding me about being 'voted in', Nichole. Please tell me you are being funny! All av clubs cry out for new blood in the groups. I am really surprised you didn't get a copy of AVSA, Nichole. Oh.........I just remembered I joined through Rob's Violets and got 2 past issues plus the new one.
I just happened to see where you could join on Rob's Violets.
This is too funny. The link Lin showed Goldleaf is one I sent her, too! We all think alike............and Goldleaf said that was where she first saw it.
Nicole, what was that man's name in San Antonio you gave me. I think he also wins awards at big shows and you sent me the pdf.
I am going to go back and find your email so I can save the pdf after all your hard work getting it.
edited to say that I did save it! He doesn't have Chiffon Maritime either.
