October Blooms, Part 2

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Often late (for me) at night I get real sentimental about old favorite plants I grew so I entertain myself by coming here to look for old pictures. If I bore you to tears, please say so!

Gloxinia Sylvatica..............gift from Goldleaf. I kept her a long long time and even propagated her to death I confess.

Always Pink. Have a leaf of her down right now.

****am hoping that Goldleaf will share her old pictures. Talk about someone who has grown all of her life. In Janurary coming up will be my 2nd anniversary growing gessies.

Debrobium orchid that bloomed almost all summer.
Maybe I should start another thread just for those of us who can't sleep at night (lol)

Gail, no - no joking! I knew it would happen . . . the treasurer chick told me in an email 2 months ago that after the 3rd meeting, the members take a vote . . . but not to worry, they had never NOT voted against a new person.

Glad you found it, Gail! For those of you that don't know what we're talking about, the man's name is Steven Spachek . . . you will find his ad in the AVSA magazine in the back (at least in past issues!). His shop is called Steven's Plant Shop. I have his list scanned in my pc at work, so if anyone wants a copy, let me know!.

Oh, he is the 1st Vice President in the local club. How many vice presidents does a club need, anyway? I notice that the AVSA has 3 vice presidents as well! I guess clubs copy the AVSA?

I really think I should stop on streps . . . my Vampire's Kiss was so wilted this morning, I have it a bit of water. I get home tonite, it's just as wilted! So, I take it out of the water. I just really don't know what to do with them. Some look ok, others don't!

Ok, Gail . . . you know you'll have to save me a stolon or cutting from Cleopatra, right? Did you notice if Ken had any others while you were there? Were the episcia in his little hut, or were they in one of the greenhouses?

Wytheville, VA

Hi Syrumani
So I can expect the magazine next month? i joined on rob's violets as well.
What do you mean "first class"?
and, I surmise it's a local show, but what is HCAV & N??

Wytheville, VA

True, plantladylin,
The blooms were very pretty, but I bought pink dreams for the foliage.
now I discover there are lots of pink, green & white episcias! I saw one called cleopatra i think, and there are more.

Syrunmani.
i would love a copy of Steven's list.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Don't quote me, kivit. I can only state my own observations. I also joined not long before Ike visited Texas, so that could have put things off for a bit.

As for First Class, go to the AVSA site and go to Library. There is a link about half way down, for the First Class presentation.

Speaking of episcia's . . . I tossed my Strawberry Patch this morning. It was looking horrid - turning brown, etc. If it was infected with something, I didn't want it to get to the rest of the things in the dome. None of the other episcia I got from L.L. are having the same issue . . . weird. Save me a stolon, Gail, once the one you have is big enough to make any!

Do you still have Pink Dreams, kivit? D-Mail me your email address, and I will email it to you when I get to work at 10am (CST!).

Ok, I took so many pictures the other night, I haven't been good about posting them. Here is Buckeye Colossal.

No. It died. I would love have a replacement!. But I can see a "dome" in my future! i was wondering what people did when they out out brandy snifters! I had babies in small glass jars with screw caps. Where do you get those domes?
By the way, I got , I think a few freebies with a strep I boght that were AV leaves. I think 1 or more were "Buckeye" but i will have to look.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

My big 8" dome I got at a local hydroponics store. They also had the 2-3" domes, but they were wanting WAY too much. I would recommend looking at your local Lowe's . . .in the garden section (at least here) they sometimes have for $10 a set w/3 trays, domes, and 72-count inserts. There is always the "other" auction site, too! I would check out local out of the way nurseries, too - I found one here recently that has been there forever, and the prices were good.

Lot's of Buckeye's out there . . . I'd be interested to know which you've got!

Here is a picture of Lyon's Spectacular. I've got to work on the settings on my camera . . . the color is not right when I use the flash . . .

Here is a different pic of Buckeye Colossal.

nice pics, Syrumani. I don't have but a few avs anymore. I don't have Cleopatra, but you can usually buy them at Ken's in Boerne. He sells them really big, too.

I just buy my big vases at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, etc.

Hint on streps drying out. When streps dry out, you never want to add much water to begin with..........maybe a tablespoon...........leave it and keep coming back hours later with a little more.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Well, I did trim the bigger leaf that always toppled it over, the dried blooms, etc. Hopefully by the time I get home from work it will look better . . .

Syrumani, you are really growing better than the rest of us!!!!!! You love those african violets . The last bloom is incredibly beautiful and I have always like Saddle Shoes. Buckeye Colossal has such nice symmetry! (listen to me like I know what I am talking about)

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

So much to catch up on here..
First, congrats to you Syrumani for your official membership ;) You'll enjoy it.

Gessiegail asked for a few pictures. When my computer crashed, I lost them all except for a few that were backed up on CD. The fun thing about this gessie hobby is that there are so many avenues to explore. Over the years, I have tried just about everything but there is always something new to try so it keeps it interesting. Some things you end up liking more than others...

For a while i was interested in violets with edges...particularly ruffled and green.

*Sassy Sister* (semimini) filled the bill for that.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Another edgey one is *Frosted Flames* with dark green ruffled leaves (standard).

For beautiful variegated foliage, it's hard to beat "Apaches"...This is an example of Apache Freedom..........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

With those pictures, I could get back into avs in a hurry. That Sassy Sister I would die for. I may have to go to Lyndon Lyons and see what they have. I have grown the Apaches and they are hard to beat with their foliage.

Keep the pictures coming...........we all love them...............and gives me new ideas

(Zone 1)

Aaah, such lovely photo's from everyone! Glad to see the thread with more pic's of AV's even though I am not growing many right now and the few I have, I would be embarrassed to show their picture! I have a problem with either forgetting to keep water in the reservoir and the plants are drying out almost totally, or keeping things way too wet, and with three cats who are always in the window in front of the stand, it seems like everything on that particular stand is always full of cat hair, nothing can breathe! Maybe one of these days I will find the patience to be a better Gessie Mom!

I just added this pic of Buckeye Colossal to Plant Files. This was taken earlier this year.

(Zone 1)

Ok, I guess I forgot the photo

(Zone 1)

Oh my goodness, "Sassy Sister" is wonderful! I Love those colors and the frilliness! oooh, and what can I say about that one called Apache Freedom? Stunning!

Yep ... if GoldLeaf keeps posting pic's like that it's gonna be hard to resist searching out and buying AV's!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Gail! I really do think AV's and I get along great. I was going between the pc and plant stand comparing the Saddle Shoes bloom against 1st class for about 10 minutes . . .

kivit had been talking recently about AV's w/big blooms. I don't know if you can tell from the first pic of L.S. that the one bloom weighed the peduncle down (see, starting to use "big" words!LOL), which is why it looks like the bloom is just over the leaves.

(Zone 1)

ooh, how did I miss that one called Lyons Spectacular? Wow! That is spectacular! That one has large leaves as well as blooms, the bloom is amazing, almost looks like a painting! I love that two tone color!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Buckeye Colossal..a real nice fantasy, Lin.

You know, there are literally 1000's of violet hybrids. Choose the ones you like..

This is another example of 'Apache' foliage. No bloom so I don't know which one but with leaves like this, who cares.

Thumbnail by GoldLeaf91011
Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

You know, GoldLeaf91011 . . . that may be a phase I'm going thru right now, too . . .I do like that Sassy Sister!

Lin - I'm doing what I can! I just need to figure out the best time/place/way/setting on camera to get better pix.

There is a baby plant I have that I received the rooted leaf cutting from Kim in June. I had it labled as Irish Angel, but it didn't fit the description, really . . . I was going over the list Kim sent me back in June, and I realize that it must be Optimara Little Diamond instead! I'll have to post a pic of it when I get home . . .

Then, there were other leaves I had stuck, and THOUGHT I labeled the cup, but either I didn't or the ink came off . . . I'll have to wait for those to bloom too, before I can relable them . . . at least I know what the "short list" is! The blooms will tell . . . someday!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Syrumani...like I said before, I'm glad you are growing violets along with other gessies too. Lyons named Spectacular for a reason! Huge lovely blossom.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Off violets for a minute...this is episcia "Seafoam"..

Thumbnail by GoldLeaf91011
Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Oh, GoldLeaf91011 . . . now it will seem like such a wait for my Seafoam stolon to grow up!

(Zone 1)

OMG ... That last 'Apache' photo is really Gorgeous! I agree totally, who needs blooms with foliage like that?

ooooh ... I like Episcia 'Sea Foam' a lot!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

My seafoam doesn't look like that!
Mine is pretty but not like yours!

****just to let everyone know, I got worried about RainGazer as I had not heard from her or seen on Dave's. She has been sick (still is) so she will be back when she feels better. I think she also has a sick child.

Hmm. I think your Seafoam, Gail, looks like the 1st pic here: http://www.streptocarpus-info.com/Episcia/tables.html. But, I think that GoldLeaf91011's Seafoam looks more like the newer leaves on the second pic. So, I suppose that the newer leaves start out with more of the rosy-pink color, and as they get older, the silver-green fills in more? Either way, tapping my toes for the next hour and 45 minutes, until DH picks me up after work, so I can go home and look at mine!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You will have to get you a laptop for Christmas, birthday, anniversary in this economy!!!! But it would be worth it for you to have to entertain yourself. I think you are right about the foliage. I can't hyperlink to the strep page for episcias. It must be some kind of protection on my computer but I will go look.

(Zone 1)

I hope this link works ... we've been having severe storms and tornado warnings and I'm having trouble on my laptop with links.

Episcia 'Seafoam': http://www.streptocarpus-info.com/Episcia/tables.html

GoldLeaf's and Gail's are both a lot prettier than the one pictured at that site!

actually it looks like I'm having trouble transmitting anything! This is just sitting here doing nothing. Probably hic cup's from the storms!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It opened this time...........sometimes those pictures hardly do justice to the plant.
This is Ember Lace
No she isn't! This is Jim's Dancing Dolls.
The only reason I have pictures is because I took them today!

She's a beauty, for sure!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

very pretty AV's and episcias ladies!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Gail, is your episcia Seafoam a new plant from Lyons? If so, the color will intensify after growing under the lights for a while compared to natural light greenhouse plants.

Plantfiles needs a photo of av Always Pink...
