October Blooms

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Syrumani...thanks for posting all your pretty episcias! If I had to reach out and be forced to take just one of them, it would be Silver Skies. They are all so nice, it would be hard to choose.

Hillbilly_Gran and I did a little trade for episcia and I received some stolons of DeBary's Embers. So neat to see your photo of it, Tommie, as a 'big girl' blooming with those yellow hued flowers. I really like it and know i will enjoy growing it :-)

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

What I didn't mention about DeBary's Embers is that the flowers turn red as they age--so you have both red and yellow flowers at the same time. I had just cleaned that plant up, removing spent flowers and damaged leaves, so there were not any to photograph. Syrumani, I will absolutely put you down for some stolons(or a plant when they're ready)!! I don't have any at the moment, having traded with Goldleaf and then putting the rest down to root. Will you put me down for Silver Skies ?That one is on my want list.
Tommie

I missed a lot last night and early this morning. Goldleaf, you always have something very different. I can't wait for your Pearcea to bloom.

Kivit, it is hard to believe in your zone that your zinnias, celosias are that gorgeous! All you pictures make me want an iron fence out here in the country . They just enhance anyone's garden.

Syrmani, your episcias I love and I had no idea you had ordered Pink Acajou so I checked my babies from you and I do have a stolon growing.......so excited as I forgot to order that one!

Tommi, I have never even heard of deBary's Ember but her yellow bloom makes her special!

I just took some pictures this morning and will share.
First is Alfred Sharpe Episcia.

Alfred Sharpe is 'sharp' looking, Gail. I don't recall seeing a good photo of that one before. I love netted streps so of course that Calico Print catches my eye.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I will continue as I was talking on the phone with a daughter.
Maybe not the best picture but Dracula's Shadow will remain one of my favorite streps

Hi Gail,I'm better thanks.I'm so glad your feeling better today. You sure have had a bad couple of months. So many pretty streps you have in flower! Beautiful!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh my...how wonderful are all those streps, gail? b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l...

Syrumani - I meant to say something earlier on your episcia Ember Lace. You may already know this but that variety is unstable and it can produce solid green stolons. If it does, remove them. Continue to propagate the variegated ones.

This is an older photo of when Ember lace decided to be half and half. You never know with that one what it will do.

I am so glad you told us this. I ordered one from LL just like she did and mine has no pink...............

Wytheville, VA

wow! beautiful streps, gail!
Goldleaf- the pink half of that episcia is gorgeous!
Not even going to go there!
i have my hands full learning about streps!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I had no idea, GoldLeaf91011! I will keep an eye on it. Gail, there is a stolon on mine . . . with pink in it . . . do you want me to stick it for you?

Also, I'm making my episcia "want" list, and was going over our order from last month . . . one of the cuttings you left with me was not labeled on the pot . . . I'm wondering if that could be Alfred Sharpe?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Alfred Sharpe has not produced a stolon yet..........but maybe she had one back then??????? I can give you my list later and you can do it by process of elimination.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I'll double check when I get home, too, and also try to take a picture of the leaves . . .

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Has anyone heard anything from Celene lately? Last I remember, she was afraid her plants were all going to die because of the freezing weather and no power . . . September 20, I think she said that . . .

South, TX

Fantastic pictures!! WOW.

I love Ember Lace!

Wow Gorgeous Streps Gail !! and one I don't have to boot!..lol..I might need to set up a trade with you my friend come spring..Great Growing!
Hello to you Jan..glad to hear you are feeling better!
Goldleaf that Ember Lace is a Beauty!
Gorgeous pics Sally..your Episcias just Glow : )

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Pretty, pretty, Sally! Nice seeing EL adorned with those pink blossoms!

Gail...any solid green stolons with no traces of variegation will not ever become variegated again. If you have any parts of the plant that are variegated, root it. Always good to keep ahead of this unstable variety as they can and do revert. Having several variegated plants (rooted stolons) will help to ensure your keeping it as it should be.

kivit - if you hang around this forum long enough, you will succumb and "go there".

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Cedarnest, when I sent your box on Monday that you bought, I stuck a couple of surprises in for you. I really did almost send some episcias but I hadn't heard you say you were growing any........................be happy to help you...........

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail you are too sweet..that wasn't necessary but so like you Gail : )...right now I am trying Episcias again thanks to Nicole..she sent some in the gessie swap box..and I must say they are doing really well..knock on wood..lol..if I continue to see them thrive like I am hoping I am going to be addicted for sure and certainly looking for more and more...

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to order another Pink Ember or whatever it is called and ask that it have a lot of pink in it................that is a to die for plant.

Nancy, let me know if you want episcias........some have stolons and some don't.....but the stems are great looking and I don't mind cutting them...........they need it they are so big..........

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail - call LL and tell them about the foliage not being variegated . . . and that it doesn't come back once it's gone. Maybe they will replace it? They won't mail any (episcia, that is!) out past the 15th of this month, according to their website.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

When I go to the MAAVS convention, I will look and see if Lyons has some good Ember Lace offered and get a couple for backup. If they do, I'll root cuttings all winter so there will be lots to go around one way or the other.

Quote:
E. 'Ember Lace', along with E. 'Cleopatra', is a very popular pink and green-leaved cultivar. However, it is not seen as frequently as 'Cleopatra', and must be managed carefully to avoid reversion of the plant to an all-green form. Crowns and stolons without the variegation must be ruthlessly removed

Great going, Goldleaf! Get a couple and start propagating! I am tired of Cleopatra. She stayed in my big vases for a year and I am ready for something new. I have your something Smoke (sorry) and she is easy on the eyes for sure!

Gail, Very attractive planted in the clear bubble bowl/vase.
Before I go to the convention, maybe I should get a sub=prime loan on my house so I can afford to buy lots of plants! Sure beats a job!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

WOW!!! What beautiful flowers.
Goldleaf, I love your Pearcea. It looks like Epicia family.
Syru, I love all your Epicia, especially Ember Lace. I love the pink in the leaves.
Gail, your streps are Awesome!! Streps are new for me. I just sowed some seeds. Hope they come up.
kivit, you make me homesick for the North. I'm originally from NYC area and miss all the 'northern' flowers.
Sally, your blooms are 'picture perfect'.
Everyones plants are 'to die for'. I love them all!!!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

How much to plants go for at a convention, that you would need a sub-prime loan? Please, tell me now! I've not been to a show or convention, and want to be prepared for when I do go to one!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Here is a pic of Cotton Candy . . . not sure how this will look . . .

Would anyone mind if I started the next thread? We're getting close to where opening the thread can take some time . . .

Here is the new thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/910712/

Syrumani...my attempt at humor ^_^. Might as well laugh about what is going on these days as it is all so absurd!
Yeah, maybe a new thread would be good as this one is getting long but it is enjoyable.
