Here is a comparison of Ipomoea obscura Ethiopia (left) and Keniaki (right). It appears Keniaki may be a tad larger than Ethiopia flower.

Here is the lavender Dai JMG. The reverse tubes are really popping out of the flowers this week!

Shikanoko made an awesome flower yesterday. It had real dense reddish specks.

The sun shone through the Shikanoko flower but you can't see the effect well in this photo.

Gerris: oh my goodness! where did u get those?

Link, Sweden(Zone 5b)

Becky - Your bulb/root of Ipomoea andersonii is amazing! Do you have it growing in the ground or in a pot?

I grow it in a pot, next year I must take a bigger pot, I was surprice this fall that the root where so big. I have the pot in my garage during the winter.

becky... this one is stunning http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5626549 i would love some seeds from that one? i love that watercolour effect... i got some fugi no monet for that very reason

and sylvia... i don't have any posh ones on the go either.... roll on next spring :-)

just a quick question... how common is this lack of pollen/seeds people keep mentioning... because i'd like to keep all the strains i've got as true as possible?

Becky, gorgeous Heian umi x Rose Silk cross.
The star pattern is lovely. You're getting some great blooms.
Love them all.

Joe's wife, great Heavenly Blue.

Ronnie, your blooms are beauties too. Love what the cooler weather
does to them. The Yuzuuki is a stunner and I love your star pattern bloom.

Joseph, beautiful blooms as usual. Love the dark eyes on both yellow blooms.
The Shikanoko is really special.

Luvs -

I wish they all looked like this

Really Nice...
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/luvsgrtdanes_1223002279_454.jpg
Here's hoping for some seeds...the stamens and stigma look very healthy...maybe rooting the stem with the flower will allow you to overwinter indoors and get seeds...

Joseph -

Excellent side-by-side comparison of these 2 Ipomoea obscura strains
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5627707

Very nice well opened flower...How about a side-by-side with the Q751 for a color comparison of the speckles ??
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5627728

Colin - The anthers and stigma can sometimes present as under-developed or prematurely senesced parts...sometimes the pollen isn't released...in these cases you can only try to cross pollinate using healthy appearing parts...

The plants that are planted directly in the ground and are late blooming outdoors may not have the time to develop mature seeds before the cold temperatures damage the plant tissue,so in these cases,if the bloom is particularly nice, then trying to root some stems to overwinter the plant and keep it going is the only alternative to simply allowing the plant to die off completely and be lost...perhaps forever...

Thanks, Ron! I have no idea where the Blizzard gene is coming from on the Heian Umi X Rose Silk. But most of the blooms do not show a Blizzard pattern.

joeswife - I haven’t grown Heavenly Blue yet, but everyone raves about it. I have seeds, so I need to try it next year! Love your lush gardens around your house. My yard is finally looking lush like that too. I love it! I have several Passiflora vines growing on my east fence. They are so thick I can’t even see the white 6’ tall fence. LOL! My own private jungle paradise! :-) :-)

Ronnie - My chocolate tie-dye was such a surprise! It is a smaller bloom. I have no idea if it was a cross of purple tie-dye and solid chocolate or how it came to be. But it is a pretty flower. It has been very consistent so far too, producing about 4 blooms now. I hope to get seeds!

I love this one http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5627535 and your Yuuzuki! So pretty! Actually ALL of yours are beautiful! WOW!

Joseph - I am smitten with your little Dai blooms! I am seeing some nice sized buds on mine and hope to see some blooms this week. :-) I also am enjoying your Ipomoea obscura! What a pretty color! I have had absolutely NO LUCK growing those seeds! I will try again next year, but I can’t figure out what the secret is to get them to germinate and thrive?

I am drolling over your Shikanoko! Lovely bloom!

Sylvia - Thanks for answering my question about growing your Ipomoea andersonii in a pot! What a cool looking plant! I just love how that trunk looks! Very, very nice!

Colin - I hope to get seeds for Dark Blue Mt. Fuji! Fingers crossed! I will share seeds if so! :-) I like it too! Thanks to Karen for sharing with me! Dmail me your request so I don’t forget. Good luck with your Fuji no Monet! I hope it comes true and produces seeds for you! If so, keep me in mind! ;-)

Jackie - Heian umi x Rose Silk cross will hopefully give me some seeds. I don’t know where that blizzard pattern is coming from. Most of the blooms are more solid color with a white border. One of my favorites in this current grow-out!

Beth - Looks like your grow room has some awesome MGs growing there! I love your Kanoko! If you should get seeds, I would be interested in trading for a few seeds! :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Here is my little chocolate tie-dye bloom today! This is such a cute little vine! Does not have large flowers like most tie-dye. Perhaps it is where I am growing it ... in a pot with Trumpet Creeper and LYK. Maybe it is competing with them for nutrients and water, etc. But it seems pretty happy there. :-)

Beth, your Kanoko looks great! I hope you get more seed pods than I have from Shikanoko. I will be fortunate to collect 4 or 5 from my vine.

joeswife, I bought the Shikanoko from an eBay listing. I obtained a few of the others via trades here on DG.

Jackie and Ron, thanks for your comments! Ron, I can try to do a comparison of Shikanoko and Q751 but they are both shutting down on flower production. I can try if they both have open flowers on the same day.

Here are some more photos: this one is Akatsuki no Hikari, which is a unique one with its pure white flower and pale lavender tube.

This one is from a Shiborizaki mix and is nice paired up with this Chrysanthemum.

Thumbnail by

Here is one of probably the last flowers of Fujisibori. It has yet to make a ripe seed pod but I am hopeful.

Thumbnail by

Also one of the last flowers of Blue Silk.

Thumbnail by

Ipomoea parasitica. It doesn't seem fazed by the 40s F. temperatures we have been having this past week for overnight temperatures.

Thumbnail by

Here is Ipomoea tricolor Blue Star greeting the morning.

Thumbnail by

I hope the tricolors make seeds, especially Wedding Bells. I like the delicate pink on its flowers.

Last one for today, another Wedding Bells flower.

Joseph, Love all your blooms. The no Hikari is a beauty.
I haven't found any ripe seed pods on my Fuji Shibori either.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - Your MGs are outstanding! Truly! What gorgeous colors in your photos!

I am going to have to look at my Fuji Shibori vine and see if it is producing seed pods. I have been hand-pollinating it. If I left most of my vines to self-pollinate ... I don't think I would get many seeds...

I always go out at night with my flashlight to see what is getting ready to bloom in the morning. It looks like my Dai will have a pretty white bloom tomorrow! YAY!

Thanks, Jackie and Becky! Becky, you have some keepers there too, gotta see your Dai flower!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - Here is my first Dai bloom. I can see the flecks of purple on the white bloom. Such a unique bloom!

Got some rain sprinkles first thing this morning!

Here is the first bloom on Q0426. I just love the leaves on this vine! Such a petite little vine! :-)

Many thanks to Arlan for sharing seeds for both these vines! :-) :-)

Okay - Could this one possibly be "Keiryu"? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/93855/
Or is it a Blue Tie-dye volunteer from my April grow-out? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/45276/

Edited to add:

This looked familiar, so I went back to my DG blog and found Blue Blizzard: http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/i/51954/

This one must be a volunteer from the April grow-out.

I have SOOOOOOOOOO many volunteers that popped up from the April grow-out that I have lost count! And many seed trades I planted did not sprout at all! HA! I guess the fresher the seed, the more likely it is to germinate and grow! lol Because I still can't tell one cultivar from another, I don't know what I have growing until it blooms ... and even then ... it could be a cross! LOL! Too much fun! The mystery continues ...
