I have to clarify... that I really don't mind the whole name thing.. I got over that many years ago, and now that I am older.. Deb, I'm thinking you are growing the same thing I was. I attached a picture. It's wild poke. As in Poke Salad... Not really any good unless you want to eat it and very invasive. It has a tuber on it that looks like a sweet potato when you did them up.
Anyway, see if this helps...

Audrey, hang in there. Mine Y'd and then it took about a week for the bud to show up and they were sooo tiny at first. But they are about doubling in size every day now. Keith is out there measuring them, not me! LOL...
Speaking of a chuckle, remember the makeshift greenhouse Keith was going to fix in the garage (about a jillion threads ago)? Well I went out there this morning and sure enough, he has cleaned some of it up. And what is sitting there in the primest, nicest spot? Four baby tomato plants. He had not said a word to me about doing this. Talk about ornery. And no, I do not go out to the garage a lot. It's a two-car garage and so full of construction equipment (junk?) that I stay away from it.

Audrey... I planted most of my brugs in the ground here, and to be safe.. I am cutting the tops off near ground level before the first frost to insure I have plants next spring. They would do ok in the ground at your house too, but planting them now would be risky... spring would be better. This is part of the "whacking" we have been talking about. Mine will still die back over winter anyway, so this cutting them off will hopefully give me new plants to share, if mine make it!

Peg... I don't know about Deb's mystery plant being Poke... usually the leaves are larger and not as many when it gets tall and the stem is purple..(I think)
