A garden in progress...the Fall version...

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Kass, I can't imagine. how wonderful for your roses to be in such good company :0 I definitely have to show that beautiful succulent garden to George. He will just love it. we want to make a succulent garden but need to build a spot with better drainage. there are lots of cacti and other plants that are hardy in our (yours and ours zone.

Miles, have you visited the Water Gardens forum? if not, definitely go there for some advice and encouragement. there are lots of folks who have built their own ponds.

Hey thanks for the pics and advice guys. I have not visited the water garden forum...I will do that.

Right now at the end of my veggie garden I have a galvanized feed basin from the farm coop sunk in the ground. I have an old well hand pump on top of it I got a Brimfiled. I have a solar water pump threaded through it that recirculates the water out the old hand pump...when the sun is out! It is cute...and not bad for $120.00 is cost! And I had a frog by it on day so it did the trick I guess...I have it filled with rocks so creatures an perch on the waters edge.

The first bloom of Lady of The Mist... very appropriate that it opened in such a wet day...

It was just waiting for the right moment to pop open. It is beautiful.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

How about a picture Miles1?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Kassia - your roses are beautiful and I love your garden so ignore anyone who says anything to the contrary. Not eating tomatoes because you didn't use pesticides seems so abnormal to me since most of us feel we're better off without them. It sounds more like your sister is jealous.

When our gardens were two years old they were nothing nearly as nice as what you have. Patience is a virtue and you may delete some plants and add others - that, to me, is what gardens are about. Get rid of what doesn't please you and fill your gardens with all you love - like Zuzu.

Why not plant some dahlias next year just for your mother to pick for the house? She'd love it.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, Miles. we'd love to see your little 'pond'. the only frogs I get to see are the ones that jump into my pool and need rescuing. I had 3 nice leopard frogs this year. I checked the spots on their backs to see if they were different or only the same dumb frog coming back over & over lol. Was just reading an article (I think in Nat. Geographic] about a decrease in frog populations all over the world because of some virus. We haven't seen any frogs in 2 years, so I was glad these came by, even if they did need to be 'fished' out of the pool.

Kass, 'lady of the Mist' is lovely. Is it an HT?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Kassia I can't believe your family said those things! Your gardens are lovely ! You keep your chin up and keep on planting what ever your heart desires!!!!

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

All my pics are on my MAC at home. Let me dig some up tonight. I can post a couple of rose pics too...though all first year so nothing like your guys stuff...

Hey, I lied, I do have a couple pics at work ;-) Here my huge water feature...don't be jealous!

And here is my bird bath...I put this in and did the perennials around it in July when my cutting garden from last year did not reseed itself like I hoped.

Here is my Kordes Harlekin by my garage wall. We bought some iron trellises at Brimfiled for next year to train this and a couple Clematis up.

And I think this is my favorite rose, I have three Kordes Westerlands between me and the neighbor. Though they were supposed to be shrubs they are sending out all these 10' canes all over the place. Love the peach/yellow/pink flowers that are all a bit different.

An I just like this pic...butterfly and a bee!

Here is the rustic arbor we built in the spring. It has two Galloway Bays. One on each side. They are much bigger now.....I just added a Ville de Lyon Clematis on each side as well...plus expanded the bed to the right around the burning bush and put in two pink hydrangeas and three pink knockouts....

And here is my favorite thing...my garden shed we added in April. I have a Dublin Bay on this end with a Nelly Moser Clematis. Picked up an old apple picking ladder at Brimfield for them to climb together up. The other side has a Dortmund from Heirloom (about 6" tall right now) with an Arctic Queen clematis...MAF

Here is a general pic of my perennial bed during the mid-July peak. No roses in this pic I just realized...there is a rainbow knockout to the right. I'm pulling out those dried up "party girl" mallows you see by the porch. They don't get enough water. I'm moving them next to the arbor. I've put in one Austin Golden celebration to the right and my Chamblees dark lady will go to the left against the porch. I've learned my lesson and pulled them out enough to get rainwater!

Swet shed miles

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Love the shed!!!!

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

Thanks, I was pinning for that all winter...8x14 with room for all my stuff...tools, two wheel barrows and my tractor!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Miles, post away!!!!! please do... love your shed... hopefully mine will become a reality this year...

Arlene, my family wants a perfect garden... it will take time...
I am trying to find plants I like... I went out with Deb to one of our favorite nurseries... Windy Lo... and I got perenials... 25% off on all perennials so I got anemones, heuchera (oh I can't belive how many different ones they had.).. and I also got 2 other plants I can't think of the name right now... purple and pink... really cool...

my goal is to really not have to plant more roses (well, with the exception of 8 from Vintage next spring - but they are bands so I am not worried) and fill in with perennials and some annuals that reseed... I think the biggest thing will be prunning the roses... that should be a hard job... I always get so many scratches...

Now I think I am going for perennials... so many!!!! love different color leaves... oh well, like you guys said to me before other plants will catch my attention and empty my wallet!~

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Kassia now you will have to come here in spring... when it's time to split up some of my plants

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Allison, my pleasure... I will go... you are not that far!!!!

I need help!!!!!
ok, now that I got Heucheras: ... have been reading about it... so do they need full sun???? I read in one site that:
......Will grow in any well-drained alkaline soil. Even though they tolerate a couple hours of shade, best results are achieved when grown in full sun....

I planted 2 in an area that will get about 2 hs of morning sun... should I change???? should I add lime to the soil????

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

depends on what color.... my light colored ones burned in full sun.... those are now in mostly shade and doing fine

do you have the names?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have Creme brulett in part sun and it gats burnt in july.
It recovered in late Aug. when temps were better and we had more rain.
I also have Blackberry Wine and its in mostly shade, doing fine.
Maybe your is a variety that can tolerate sun as the ticket said.
I have seen Heucheras in sun at the front of borders so maybe yours will be OK.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We'll need the names in order to help with the Heucheras, Kassia.

Both Palace Purple and Chocolate Ruffles have dappled shade with some late afternoon sun here and they thrive. Others aren't happy no matter what exposure they have - like Snow Angel. It grows smaller each year and soon will be invisible and easy to care for.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

lol, pirl -"soon will be invisible and easy to care for" great word picture.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Once I had a mini hosta and now it's invisible. At least it didn't leave a gap in the garden.

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

Kassia:

I planted 'Prince of Orange' Heucheras in the spring in a spot that got four hours of morning sun and afternoon shade. They got kinda crispy. I just moved them to a shadier spot. I think they like shade, at least that is what I've read...we'll find out!

Miles

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Kass, I bought a bunch of different heucheras from the coop here in the spring. some were labelled full-part shade and some said they needed sun for best color. So you have to look at each one indivdually like pirl and everyone have said. I tried to situate them as the tags indicated and so far, so good.

Miles, now I am jealous not only of your water feature but of your new shed. that's a beauty, and a nice size, too. speaking of size, if I remember my high school math, small water feature > no water feature LOL. and your plantings are so pretty. we have quite a few of the same plants...must have the same taste in gardening. what clems are you going to plant with your 'Harlekin'?

Kass, which one of your sisters is the artist? does she at least understand the garden?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

In general, they do better with part sun, though individual ones do vary. Some need more shade and others can take more sun, provided they get sufficient water. I had some light colored ones in full sun this year that did fine - they were in the 'hose zone'. I have found some of the newer ones to be unreliable.

South Hamilton, MA

The ones with purple foliage need shade or the leaves burn. the green leaved are fine in sun--not sure about orange etc.

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

grampapa...thanks! I do love my shed. I don't have a newer pic of it because my camera got mulched by the riding mower (don't ask), but I wanted the shuttes and window boxes to be the same blue as my garage doors, but in a stain, we could not find anything that vibrant. Finally my guy at the paint store told me to dilute the paint 3 to 1 and make my own stain. I did and it is awesome. We're going to stain the body a driftwood grey. I'd love to let it weather, but it is pine, not cedar so it would pretty much just rot.

And we must have the same great taste in plants. I buy all the really common PPFA winners that a dunce like me can grow...'becky' shasta daisy, 'david' phlox, 'goldsturm' rudbeckia, 'butterfly blue' scabiosa, 'walkers low' nepeta....that sort of stuff...so I'm not terribly adventurous except maybe in roses...and even there I think I probably am more on the safe side. Miles

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone!!!!! thanks so much!!!! ok, here are the Heucheras I got:

Marmalade
Black Beauty
Citronelle
Caramell (2)
Tiramisu
and another one I can't think of the name... I have been reading and it certainly seems to be a great plant to have... hope they make it to next spring! they will be planted this weekend...

Ah, Pirl I have some invisible roses!!!!! they never get black spot!

Now I am looking at these plants to plant under the trees that I have hostas and see what I can mix it to get great color...
Astilbe
Jack Frost Brunnera
Violas
Lamium ( I have white)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my citronelle is the one that burned up in the sun.... the tiramisu is in part sun and doning fine

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

My Citronelle is in morning sun only and loves it. Obsidian is in the same garden and so is Purple Petticoats - so far they're all happy. It's the peach family that gives me grief and they never have developed into the lush plants that Chocolate Ruffles and Palace Purple are.

For under the tree and to match the hosta flowers (if you don't cut them off as I do) try 'Pumila' astilbe, Kassia. It spreads slowly, it's a late bloomer and it's pale lavender - very nice.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Kassia - I was just out pinching back coleus when the bright light went on - they'd be ideal for the shade to go in with your hostas and you can probably go to the Coleus forum in spring and gets tons of cuttings for the price of postage.

Thumbnail by pirl
Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh wow... love that combination... I have that coleus... it's small so I plan to bring inside... yey!!!! great idea...

I just went outside this morning and checked on all of them.. and the one I don't know the name has no tag... I bet I took the tag out and never put it back... so typical!

I had a brilliant idea... well I think it is! the entrace of my rose garden has one side that gets basically tons of shade the other side gets tons of sun... so I am doing and sun and shade beds... now the challenge is to make sense of that!!!! ha! I don't know if my OCD (which is not as bad as it use to be!) will actually allow that to happen!!!!
