Yeah, I'll take your "brown mess" over shrubs and lawn any time!!!
A garden in progress...the Fall version...
wish I could smell those Kassia
Beautiful!! My roses are still blooming too!! I have one I think it is called Peace starts yellow and ages to a pink.
Kassia:
Love your Rhapsody in Blue. I was thinking of getting that. I wanted something in a more purple tone than the stuff I have now. I'm not far from you in NE CT. How big does that get?
Also, I notice you have some gorgeous old roses...how are they to care for? I put in something like 32 roses this year so I'm just navigating their care (organically) mostly going well...few surprises ;-)
Miles
Allison, Romaggi and Camile smell wonderful... so wonderful!!!!!
I love roses that change colors also... and some are so dramatic! Gipsy Dancer and Raimbows end are among my favorites...
Miles, rhapsody in Blue is only in its 2nd year - it's about 4 feet all... no more than that, but I did cut some branches back to give it a more round shape... it's a nice size... and I have it in a area that gets shade the hottest part of the day so the colors don't really fade... is not the case of red roses that really suffer in the sun in my garden...
I have Rugosas - and it's basically no work... I really just cut them back a little because they grow really fast... old hyb teas are most own roots so they are smaller but so far they are ok... I have Belle de Crecy that is a once bloomer and it's the only rose that got powdery mildew this year... but it put up such a show that I forgive her... aphids don't really discriminate... they go for all my roses... so tons of spraying in spring... JB attack most of them also... so I planted tons of 4 oclocks and I am not sure that's the reason why but I had way less this year.... so I don't really do a lot for them... but that's me... I feed them alfalfa and that's all I do...
I like old roses ... love Arrilaga, La France, Ferdinand Pichard... their shape and scent are just amazing to me...
Yeah, I went crazy with 4 o'clocks too...had them in planters all over the place so I could move them if need be. JB issue was manageable...but still had a lot, so not sure if they were actually doing something, but I don't want to find out! I'll just assume they were and do them every year...the chives really seem to help my couple of teas...so the allium thing will be big for me going forward.
re:rugosas I'm trying to get a quote for putting a pond in. I envision it surrounded by a bunch of Fru Dagmar Hastrups and maybe a Rossarie de l'hay....but I have not gotten the quote yet. Once I do, I might just end up with a sunken bucket surrounded by roses ;-)
As far as old roses, I have a lot of stuff from the 1950s/60s, does that count?...Mr. Lincoln, Westerland, Iceberg...I'm getting braver though, just ordered a Zepherine Drouhin for around my front door....I'm working my way backward from Pink Knockout!
MAF
I'm loving this keep the pics coming!!
Tamberlin that is a beautiful picture of your grandmother!!
Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful!!!
Christina won't eat organic tomatoes? "Better living by chemicals", my MIL says. Not me! That's nuts!
Thanks!!!! I am telling you my sister is missing a good thing.. I don't care so there is no need for me to share with her my tomatoes...lol...
I've got some great mini hostas that aren't supposed to be mini. Maybe they'll burst out next year. It's hard keeping the slugs off them.
Harper, coffee grounds... I learned that from Pirl!!!!
Whaaaa! I had to quit coffee for a while. I was getting heart palpitations.
