Victor--
.....telling my age here! Yes! I also used to watch The Flintstones.....and I remember Lawrence Welk and Liberacci, and The Lone Ranger and Hoppalong Cassidy......
I had a crush on Mario Lanza when i first came to America (1951).....because the first movie I ever saw in this country was "The Student Prince".......:o) Talking ANCIENT here!
Then--all the male idols of that era followed----who can remember their names????? But, I was surely, in love with all of them.....subject of many an erotic dream.....
I think movies then cost like 50 cents....I would walk 2 miles to the Theater to watch them...and if i really, really liked a certain romantic scene (aaaahhhhh....!) in them--I would sit through another showing of the movie just to see it....for the same 50 cents!
AHHH! Adolescence!!!!
I used to clip EVERY face and picture of Movie Stars from, then, Movie magazines. Over the years, I have "edited" that collection some (can't remember the last time I even looked at it???)--BUT, I still have a box-full of color photos of movie stars from those days (1950's) in this box!
Who knows WHERE it is---but I DO know I have it.....Sad! Most of them are dead by now----what a reality check!!!!!
Saw Elizabeth Taylor in a wheelchair the other night--(was it on one of the debates????)
OH MY GOD!!!! She looked horrible--sagging face and chin--and STILL smothered in make-up! PULEEEEZE!!!! WHY can't people just age gracefully? Do they still think at 80-something that they just look so gorgeous with all that make-up?
OK! I better button-up, or I will get "canned"......
Everyone--please forgive me for digressing from this Thread!
Gita
Stones, rocks, boulders and erratics 3
No problem, Gita. Memories are great.
Hey Gita remember Tyrone Power? in Captin from Castile? and Errol Flyn ?in Bandit of Sherwood forest?
I'm 73 and also walked two miles with my .50 cent allowence. We could see a movie and 10 cartoons for a quarter on Satuerdays.
They have just made the State Theater in Ithaca NY a landmark. It was beautiful.
Those were great times.Just after the depression, we'll be living like that again soon. When there are no banks to hand out easy credit.
Thats enough Jo Ann
Jo Ann--I am 71+........We are the "Young Oldies"......
YES! I DO remember all those names--and more! How about Stewart Granger? Also some of the female stars that made my yearning flutter.....Leslie Caron in Gigi? Cherise (sp) the dancer with the "legs"? Audrey Hepburn? Mitzi Gaynor in all those musicals? Donald O'Connor, Gene Kelly--the ultimate dancer/singer?
How about Tarzan????? droooool....WHO was it back then? Johnny Weismuller?
Our "vintage" Theater here in Baltimore--still in operation--is the "Senator". Many Premieres are shown here. It still has the cushy seats and the chandeliers overhead.
It is now on the historical list as well--but having trouble existing......can't compete with the 20-theater operations of the biggie Theaters.....
The killer was finding out--YEARS later--that Rock Hudson was gay! Wonder what Doris Day thought about that????? Did she know? No one talked about this in "those" days....
How about James Dean? Buddy Holly? Fats Domino? Dean Martin? The Everly Brothers? Those were the days you could trluy sing along with all the music on Radio.
The list could just go on and on.........sob............sob...............
Gita
Nothing like that will ever live again!
My wife and I love old movies (and music), so I am familiar with every name mentioned!
victor---Do you have any thoughts how this pile of rocks came to be?
My analytical mind is going berserk! Always asking--WHY? WHY????
I always keep thinking it was the Glaciers that did it all.....makes sense to me--even if I have no other ideas......
Gita
The large original stone is an erratic. Why it broke apart is probably due to water freezing and causing stress within it, weakening it.
Victor is right.Freezing and thawing do strange things to the earth.
Cid Chriese was married to a band leader ?
Doris Day might have been ahead of her time and just liked him for what he brought to the friendship.
I saved the other rockfall view too V.I like the iron smears on the two in the middle.

Yes, Cyd Charisse was married to Tony martin.
Great pictures, everyone! I'm finally catching up on this thread. Been spending a lot of time posting fall pics in the Fall Foliage thread and the Reflections thread. Cool erratic in Dublin, also. I didn't get a chance to stop there and get a picture of it.
Wow! Louise, those erratics across from your neighbors are fantastic!
Victor, great shots from your hike posted Oct. 8. I love the bowling alley. That's very interesting. The outcroppings of rock are great, too, and I love that massive stone slab shelter. That are reminds me of many areas in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Reno, Lake Tahoe, etc. I loved hiking in that area. Have you ever been there? Victor, you sure that rockfall is not the remains of the Old Man in the Mountain? Too bad about that one!
Thanks for the memories, Gita! I, too, have had many a crush on movie stars or singers in my days. Had many pics of my walls when I was in high school. Had a big crush on Elvis. Still think he's magnificent looking. Not too many men can come close. Sigh! I still drool of many celebs even today.
Karen
Karen, wouldn't you just love to have been a kid at the house with the big erratics/caves right across from the house? I think that would have been so cool!
Yes, Louise, that certainly would have. I always loved playing around rocks when I was a kid.
Karen
We used to have 'cliffs' across the field near the house where I grew up. I was always so afraid to climb them. They were very tall - perhaps about 30 to 40 feet high, and pretty much straight up and down. One day I decided to test myself and climb down them. It was the best thing I ever did for my self-esteem.
Looks great on both threads!
victor!
Just beautiful and awe inspiring!!!!!!! LOVE all the rocks you have posted!!!!
How much do you hike? Every day???
I could do 2 miles--maybe 3--if I had good company, but with the 'slower life" in the last 5 years as a result of 2 knee replacements--I am a bit out of practice/endurance....
I DO think I could work back up to more walking--but hiking involves uneven ground and ups and downs, slippery surfaces, etc. I am VERY insecure on this kind of terrain. Too scared of falling.....especially if I fell on my knees!
Gita
Thank you, Gita. I hike at least once a week. I try to go twice, but usually don't get the chance.
Thanks Victor
Gita I also have had to curtail hiking and walking unless the terrain is flat. Rolling fet on uneven turf makes for very painful knees.
I enjoy Victors hikes vicariously.
That is lovely, Jo Ann!! There are a number of shots that Victor has posted on this thread that would also make lovely paintings!
Hint -hint. I agree, it is wonderful. Amazing how something catches the eye - like the iron wash. Great!
Victor, that is great you have the opportunity to get out and hike so much. I have no time, and any good hiking spots near me are a bit far, and I can't afford the gas. When I lived in Arizona I hiked at least once a week or more. There where many great places to hike near where I lived, and I had a lot more time for myself. Now that I help my sister take care of our elderly father and I have so many gardens there is less time for other pursuits. Oh, well, I'm sure there will be a time again in the future that I will have more time again for hiking. I don't miss it too much, as I always have so much to do, and my gardening keeps me happy.
JoAnn, your painting is lovely. Great job!
Karen
Thanks everyone.Sometimes elements in a photo just look like watercolor.
Hello to you all from sunny but chilly southwest Florida! Things are unusually lush this fall and our gardens are a veritable jungle - much in need of taming.
Given that this is the stone/rock/boulder/erratic thread, I've kept my eyes open for something of that nature to photograph and post, but guess what? There's only sand here, with the exception of the landscape stuff you purchase from HD. For now I have decided not to bore you with a close-up of one of the lava rocks that I've hired to keep the jagonzo black snakes away from my patio, so I'll just keep hunting for an overly aggressive erratic that followed some hummers south once it got on a roll.
Bye for now, y'all!!
Louise
Welcome back, Louise! Glad you had a safe trip. Get re-acclimated to the warm weather!
Thank you, Victor! I hear we're not missing much - weatherwise!! At the moment, it's 71 and sunny here, but it should be pretty chilly again tonight, then a warm-up into the low 80s. I need to find my camera and take a few shots of the jungle......Oh, by the way, I saluted you as always when we crossed the Hudson. It was such a pretty view as we approached the valley from up above it. The fog was lying close to the River and it had such an interesting look. I thought I saw you hiking with your camera, but maybe not! LOL It was early morning.....
Glad you had a safe trip Louise
Good to hear from you Louise!
Thanks, JoAnn and Deb! It's nice to be reconnected here! I'm running around a lot with appointments and trying to tame the outrageous plants that went totally bonkers in my absence, so I may not be as chatty as I'd like for a few days at least. LOL
Perfectly understood.See you when the dust settles.
Hi, Louise! Wish I could join you in Florida come Jan. and Feb. I hate those 2 months here most of all. Any of the others I can deal with. Enjoy the warmth!
Karen
Hey there, Karen! I have to agree with you. Those are the two months that made winter feel interminable for me, so I do especially love being able to take our daily walks in short sleeves most of the winter. I hope it's not as cold and snowy as they are predicting up there this winter.
You and me both!
Karen
Hi Louise!!
I hadn't been on this website for a couple of days, so I missed the fact that you arrived safe and sound in your winter quarters. Did you hear that we had snow, shortly after you left? You left just in time, I think!!
Give Hank and Molly a couple of hugs for me, would ya?
Hi Candyce! I will definitely do that for you. Thanks! I did hear that we just barely missed the snow. Sniff. Hope you are all cozy and warm from all that wood that Gregg split and stacked!! My best to everyone too!!
Louise
Hi, guys!
I'm back from the familiy wedding in Denver, CO and I have a picture for the "Famous Rocks" dept. . Not a boulder or an erratic, but the product of erosion, this is the famous "Balancing Rock" at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. My father was stationed at nearby Peterson AFB briefly during WWII and I think he has a picture of himself in his uniform standing next to this rock. I will have to go and dig through my mom's photo albums to find it. Anyhow, lots of rocks in the Rocky Mountains!
It was a great wedding and a lovely tour, but I am glad to be back.
Martha
