I thought I'd start a new bloom thread since the first one is at over 150 posts now, don't you just love it, all the pictures and chat!!
I am so excited! My sinningia Guttata from Jan is opening up! Here she is from yesterday...

September Blooms, Part 2
Oh my goodness ... now that Strep Tarjar Roger W has to be one of the most beautiful I've ever seen! Gorgeous color of that fantasy bloom!
Wherever you are headed Brenda, have a safe trip and a great time!
Tar jar is great, hard to bloom true from a leaf but it does happen, most of the time they get them from a division,
JIM
It's either Space Dust or Streaker that is the same way, can't remember which. I ordered one from Lyons years ago and they said they had to wait until one came into bloom to make sure it was true.
they are tough to grow, have you ever seen spin art bloom, its a doozy, love that bloom
also like a lot of bristols fantasys, party boy, party girl, party animal and pajamera party
good stuff,Neils Jammin and Neils wam bam are way neat too,Im thinking its a 3 way tie
for my favorite,Jammin, spin art and fancy pants, jules is right up there too
there are 2 new ones from david thompson ,they are helter skeltor and batik
they are pretty too
JIM
WOW ! You must have a huge collection. Wish I could peek at you stands. I've had B. Party Girl and Jules before....lost now. I just bought Spin Art from Nancy on the Marketplace......can't wait for my first bloom. I'm a big David Thompson fan and am trying to collect all of his. I've got a long way to go. LOL I have never seen Helter Skelter or Batik......OK gotta go google.
Rox
Oh my goodness ... they are all so pretty! Looks like a kaleidoscope of colors in those fantasy blooms! So, that's bustle back foliage?! That is just so cute! I think I remember seeing a plant like that one time and didn't buy it because I thought it was deformed or something, LOL. Live and learn, huh?
Leading Lady is looking pretty! Love the edges on that bloom!
I think she is a judge, Lin. I think (smiling) that is where all those pretty blooms are coming from. Every year our president calls to see if we want to sell something for 'very little' to the judges who are visiting (LOL). We love you av-cod-girl but I told her NO........that I was in no position financially to be giving to the judges plants I really wanted and enjoyed growing.
Having said that, we are happy for you that you are being given so many beautiful plants.....by your club president.
I am starting to get a small collection going of the wasp (Senk and Dates particularly) african violets. I now have, Merlot, Say What, Sport of Celery, Royal Wasp, Girl Foliage and a few more. I love to grow them from leaf.......which reminds me I have grown some from Long Leg Senk and they are awesome looking. Let me find one to show. One of mine bloomed recently and it knocked my socks off. (her bloom is not this bright.....more mauve)
I borrowed her picture with the really mauve flowers:
Huh? I'm lost ... even if av_ocd_girl is a judge, is there some rule about judges not buying plants? I would think it would be okay for anyone (including judges, unless the rules state otherwise) to buy plants at shows at whatever price the seller puts on them. I have never been to a show but I know it would be awfully hard to pass up purchasing some of the beautiful AV's ... I'd be wanting one of every thing I saw, I'm sure!
Gail, I thought you weren't growing AV's anymore? I must have missed something ... but I find myself missing my brain a lot lately, LOL. So, you are starting to collect AV's again? I think I do remember you were going to only collect mini's or trailers.
I hope everyone who has these beautiful AV's will consider uploading their photo's to Plant Files.
Gail, I love the looks of the wasps! So cute the way those blooms just stick up and look like wasps flying about ... I can see why they got that name. I had 'Celery' a couple of years ago ... such a pretty little violet. I had never even heard the term wasp bloom before joining DG.
Ok ... is that photo you posted of an AV called Long Leg Senk? Sorry I'm so confused ... it doesn't take much to confuse me anymore! I can't see the picture very well, it doesn't enlarge. Maybe I will go google it.
I am more confused than you, Lin.............I am not talking about at the shows, Lin. During the year at odd times, if the judges are in town just visiting, the club tries real hard to find interesting plants for them. Now, do I have you more confused????????? I am because I am sleep deprived (LOL) and determined to stay up and watch the hurricane in Galveston and Houston.
At the shows, we , as members, put back in the kitchen anything we think the judges might like to grow......they do pay for them at the shows.........they also buy from the show and display tables.
I am only growing a few african violets:
chimeras
trailers
wasps
and that is all of the avs I am growing.
I can tell you for sure that av-ocd-girl is a great grower and has so much knowledge she has acquired. Those terms she is using we could all learn as they are in the judging manuals.
Gail, You're right, I am a judge......or at least I don't think they've kicked me out yet. LOL I haven't judged a show in about 3 years. My receiving such a wonderful gift had nothing to do with that thou. The most I've ever received for judging a show is a free meal and a refrigerator magnet. LOL I'm not sure what your club does is a widespread practice.
After all the beautiful streps and leaves I got from you and Nancy on the Marketplace, and my recent ebay wins, and the order from Lyons........I'm starting to feel better about my almost empty shelves. LOL I know everything is going to start growing and filling them up real soon. : )
Roxanne
Oh.............it may not not be a common practice so I probably shouldn't have said anything, Roxanne. Oooooooh.........I am hyper and on overload tonight determined to see what happens through the night. My heart breaks for the most vulnerable people in Houston and surrounding areas.
I won't ask you now........but someday you have to tell us what happened that you had to have 2 back surgeries back to back. That happened to my son when he was 34.......he is now 36 and holding his own with the last back surgery. They were trying to avoid a fusion at his age.......just trying to buy time until something else is new with back surgery.
If you are hiding any pictures, we want to see them (smiling).......My trailer of Pink Champagne is not nearly as large as yours is.
I have a friend on DG and we always send wasp leaves to one another or grow the other a plant (Jannich) so if you want leaves to wasp plants, let me know. I may even have an extra wasp or two. I am itching to order some more wasp leaves from Blossoms, Birds, Butterflies or something like that.........they have such a good selection......
Back to the kitchen sink to half work and half watch the storm.............
No, No, No, not back surgery. LOL I meant back to back surgeries. I had a total knee replacement on my right knee in Feb. 2006, total knee replacement on my left knee in Jan. 2007 and hysterectomy in March 2007. My poor plants suffered mercilessly and basically all I have left is what was sealed in prop boxes. I've just recently started trying to collect gessies again. I've been busy enjoying my new knees and did a tremendous amount of landscaping last summer and this spring. Back to my true love now......African Violets.

So glad your knees are doing well. My mom had a knee replaced and she is so happy.
I had a hyster. three months ago. Just now able to work hard in my yard again. My violets got plenty of care since I could slowly walk in there and care for them.
Knees would be very hard. Glad you are better now.
It is a wonderful thing to be able to walk without constant pain. I'm glad your mom got it done. I encourage anyone that asks me to go ahead and get it done. It's a lot of pain and a long recovery, but has totally changed my life. I used to do what I called the 'double shuffle' when I went up and down stairs. Now I don't even hold a handrail.
Taking care of my violets meant going up and down stairs and was just something I couldn't do when I was recovering. I live alone most of the time, as DH works out of state and is gone a good part of the time. I had a lady coming every other day, but she didn't do plants. Oh well, starting over isn't so bad. Gives me something to look forward to. LOL
Roxanne,
I know how hard it is to recoup from multiple surgeries... I had so many in a two year span I was afraid I was going to go under one time and not come out...LOL I did not have plants at the time.. Well I lie I did have some house plants but nothing like these...LOL
I have a wedding to go to later today but I am hoping to get some babies potted up before I go... Also have some leaves to pot up also...
Ok be back in a few.
Hugs,
Susan
Got it! Knee surgery is a long long recuperative time. So glad you feel like a new person with good knees.
I have made a list of 'to do's' concerning plants...........so better get with it.
I have a good friend in Houston who is going to ride with her son and family to their house in Rockport late today. She is going to stay with me a few weeks until the electricity is back on. She even lost her water pressure???????????
My dad who is 83 has had both of his knees replaced, the second one just last year and my youngest sister (age 52) is going to have a total knee replacement mid December. She has blown both of her knees playing tennis but is only having the worse of the two done right now.
Gail, I am so glad your area wasn't affected by the hurricane. It sure did a number on Galveston didn't it, and the Houston area. It will be a long, long recuperation time for the coastal regions. I heard that coastal Alabama had some major flooding too. Has anyone heard from Jannich? I think she is in coastal Alabama, isn't she? Sure hope she is okay too.
Thoughts and prayers to everyone in the areas affected by Ike.
Just curious, has anyone ever heard of this Gesneriad: http://128.253.177.181/imgs/pgc4/r/Gesneriaceae_Agalmyla_parasitica_8949.html
I had this photo image bookmarked on my computer from a couple of years ago and tried googling but can't find any information about this plant. Sure is a pretty Gessie!
It is very pretty, that is for sure! Maybe you can try and contact Margaret H. Stone by clicking on the email link. Worst she can say is that it's a fake . . . and best would be to let you know how to get one!
Oh my goodness, Lin. I am going to look everywhere for the seed...........that is truly magnificent.
I heard from Jan a couple of days ago and she had been feeling really poorly but was doing better. I don't know if she escaped it all.
My friend from Houston is headed this way in the morning to stay until she gets electricity and water in several weeks. She reports that there are areas where we used to live (Briargrove subdivision) near the Galleria where it looks like tornados hit. It will take many years for 5 million people to restore what was built.
Will add a picture of a strep I couldn't find the name of until I asked Jim King and, of course, he knew right away. Just love her but didn't know name........when he said Crimson Blaze, it made sense because I remember having Crimson Blaze and must have started this one from many leaves.
Hi, Nichole........I want one!!!!!!
By the way, my cousin in Houston said that when the winds came in on the front of her house, it was like there weren't any windows as water was going everywhere on the floors. My daughter said her good friend said the same thing about her windows when the wind from Ike got to her house.
Lin, she is not as pretty when the whole plant is included...............

Gail, your photo's are just beautiful. Always makes me smile seeing all these lovelies.
Oh, that picture of the entire hanging basket of that unusual Gessie isn't real pretty but it could be the growing conditions of whoever the owner is, or the camera etc. In that photo it looks like some of the leaves are gigantic and some medium sized! Gail, I know if you grew one it would be gorgeous!
Lin, you are always too nice to me and think I can do anything. (I can't!) But I am headed to several seed places now and see if I can find that . It would be fun to try and see if I could grow it. Think I will try Maruo's seeds........Chiltern...........and The Gesneriad Society. I forgot to see if it was a species or hybrid......going back to the reference page.
somehow it didn't take my reference hyperlink:
