Oh my goodness ... I wonder if they all get this large? http://www.gesneriads.ca/agalmy02.htm
September Blooms, Part 2
if you scroll down a bit............then click genus you will see many different kinds and relatives.........really neat plants........
I found one I absolutely Love the looks of: http://www.gesneriads.ca/titano03.htm
interesting info regarding that last one I like the looks of: http://www.gesneriads.ca/titanotr.htm
Gail - it's good to see you up and active again! Why, oh why, though would you put a "giant in size" AV in the trash? For shame! The large standard AV's I've got are still in the "toddler" stage, it seems . . . I would make room for a giant!
Lin - I too like the looks of that yellow one!
Ok, maybe you guys can answer something for me . . . last month, Rain sent a Kohleria Queen Victoria cutting. I potted it up, and put it in the big humidity dome . . . I was trying not to move the dome the whole month of September, but I did get another of Susan's Kohleria "worms", and needed to get it in there . . . anyway. I was looking at each of the babies in there, dabbing up the water droplets, when I notice a few of the plants look like they are growing air roots (ok, there may be a different name for them!) . . . is that because of the humidity in the dome? Let's see if the pic turned out . . .
Nichole, Amy sent me the same cutting but I only left it under the dome two weeks.......that is about all it takes for them to root. Get her out with your other plants........When I plant rhizomes, they only stay under the dome long enough to see green..........and out they come. Yours look fine but their foliage would be better and more mature (thicker) if they weren't in a dome.........just an idea..................
When I get a Kohleria rhizome, I plant it about a half to an inch under the soil line..........in a bigger container than you have........probably a solo cup of 3 ounces...........once you see green, give it light and lots of it...........not a dome, I don't think. Someone weigh in here.........besides me............
Lin, that last pictrue of T. oldhamii I tried and I killed it..............but I did just find the seed to the first picture of A. parasitica................and I am ordering the seed just to see what happens. I wish I could find the seed to that wonderful orange one we all saw but can't find it............
good night.............sleep tight................don't let the bedbugs bite...............
Love
gail
Nichole, I feel so badly and selfish that I threw out so many african violets today as I need the space for other things. BUT..............you are the winner because...........I have a magnificent Newtown's Quiet Resolve grown by leaf from the winner of our entire show last February.........she won whatever is the best AV in its' class..............here she is in all her glory (LOL) and I will bring her to you when I come to the dentist.................I just took a picture for you because I forgot I would be seeing you this coming week.
I have a terrarium full of stuff and found this Episcia with a lot of those aerial roots. It is very humid in that terrarium but everything seems very happy and growing almost out the top! I even found a little hoya in there with 2 peduncles ... can't wait to see the blooms open.
Here's a photo I just took looking down into the terrarium at that Episcia:
There was more than one?!?!? (oh, the heartache!) I'm just giving you a hard time! LOL!! But the Newtown's Quiet Resolve does look nice!
As for the two Kohleria rhizomes . . . they were very tiny ones . . .
I will go take the Queen Victoria out of the dome . . . I've never grown these before, so need all the help I can get!
Hi All,
I did not know we were suppose to put the Kohleria worms in a dome :-( I have several not in domes... I hope they make it... I may unpot one to see what they are doing...
Hugs,
Susan
Some people don't dome any of the Kohleria rhizomes, Susan..............I guess just do what works for you.........I dome mine just until I see the green showing.
I don't know what works for me Gail as I never grew them from rhizomes... So time will tell. Thanks.
Hugs,
Susan
I've never grown them, period . . . so, I revert to what I learned with AV's . . . put under a dome or in a baggie . . . I suppose the next one I get I won't put under a dome, and see what happens!
Kohleria rhizomes do not need to be domed, but the soil should stay moist. (If you dome them, you can forget about watering until you see something happen.) You can also stick rhizomes in a baggie of moist perlite - when you see them sprout, pot them up.
If you let kohleria rhizomes dry out, they will just shrivel and die. I haven't had a problem with them rotting from too much moisture, but I guess that might be a problem if they are in a cool spot. I think Achimenes rhizomes are more prone to rot while dormant. HTH.
Wow I am just speechless at all these wonderful pics..need to go write down which of these I can't live without..lol..looks like another longgg list..great growing everyone!
Country Bumpkin is precious but I really love Glory Be!
My goodness, I can't catch up with all the beautiful pictures. You ladies sure have been busy the past week.
Gail your sinningias are beautiful.
Brenda did the flower last on sinningia guttata till you got home? Does it smell fragrant to you at all?
Hi Miss Lin,Here I am.LOL.
Those I just pictured are coming your way Jan tomorrow....................are you happy?
hee,hee.I'm happy:)
GAIL!!!! You threw away AVs?!?! Horrible!
Just joking. I've done it before too. I used to have a collection of over 500. When you have that many plants something's got to give when you need room. LOL Now I'm down to 50.
Beautiful Sinningias Gail! I really like them all, can't pick a favorite. : )
This Noid Streptocarpella is growing outside under a tree. It had stopped blooming in the middle of July.....because of heat?......now is starting again. Soon it will be time to cut it up for the winter.
how beautiful, av girl............that is the most unusual bloom I have ever seen...............when springtime comes I am going to be looking for a trade with you for some cuttings.........just a magnificent plant!
Rox,
That Streptocarpella is Wonderful! I love the small leaf and flower of them. My sister in N. Georgia grows them in containers on her deck like that and they get full and huge for her too. I received cuttings in trade twice and they didn't live long for me. Maybe I should try planting them in the ground under a tree or something, since they don't seem to like my house, LOL. There's just something about me and Strep's (of any kind) ... we just haven't learned to get along yet! ^_^
Wow beautiful sinningias Gail..you sure can grow them! Never seen one of yours I haven't loved!
Roxy thats the largest most gorgeous basket of streptocarpella I have ever seen..lol..It sure looks happy..Mine never does nearly that well..you definitely have a gift with it..
Gail, that Sinnigia Seminole is gorgeous. Looks so soft. The flower color is wonderful.
Roxy, that huge plant is something! WOW!
Thanks! It's in one of those 'self watering' hanging baskets from Wal-mart. Works like Texas style potting......with a water reservoir and perlite. Then I just threw some Osmocote in it and forgot about it. I'll be cutting it up soon and send cuttings to whoever wants them. OK? : )
Rox
Roxanne, please put me on the list and then tell me what you want and I will send!
Rox: I would love some cuttings of the Streptocarpella .... will gladly pay for packaging and shipping!
Snugasbugrug: Wow! That is one Beautiful AV! I am a pink fanatic ... 60 years old but pink always was my favorite color, and still is! LOL. That is stunning! Welcome and thanks for sharing your lovely bloom!
Gail, your Sinnigias are beautiful. I especially like Seminole. Glory Be is pretty too.
Roxy, what do you mean 'soon it will be time to cut it up for the winter'? Do you take cuttings of the streptocarpella? Can't you just bring the pot inside for the winter? It seems a shame to cut it up. It's beautiful.
