September Blooms, Part 2

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Went back and read all the posts again. My brain is still in NY time. Roxy, I would love cuttings of your streptocarpella. I'll gladly pay for postage. Please add me to the list.

Snug as a bug, what a gorgeous plant! Lin, for some reason I can't get the lipstick to be a large picture. I will try again.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is a gorgeous lipstick plant, Lin. Where in the world did you get that micrathanus?

Imadigger, I cut back every plant I have going into fall............remember you get two new shoots everywhere you cut..............making more a much prettier plant the next season.........and a lot fuller.

Beautiful pictures... I took some pictures tonight and since I don't have to work tomorrow I will post them tomorrow... I wanted to ask a question, when don't I right??? Since I don't have to work I am going to plant some cuttings up in soil and I am thinking of cutting a few of my Kohleria's... So do I just take the top off and root that and if so do I cut the rest of the plant down? Hope someone can help and Thanks..
Hugs,
Susan

If it were me, I would just start at the top, take the top two nodes (where two leaves form)......so two of those and cut..........stick that in soil and dome.............don't throw away the rest of the plant.........do the same thing again.........take 2 nodes and cut........plant them.........keep doing it until you end up with one stem about 1/2 " and let the rhizome grow growth again. (foliage again) (If you plant has taken off in different directions in growth, do the same thing..........two nodes, cut and stick............)

Is this clear as mud???????????????/

Gail, I got the first A. micranthus from Home Depot a couple of years ago ... labeled as variegated lipstick plant but had no variegation in the foliage. I guess it needed to grow a bit and needed more light because the variegation finally showed up. The second one I got at Wal-Mart. They are both Exotic Angel plants.

I was at a local Wal-Mart last week and they had some large baskets of what looked to be identical to mine, not exotic angel plants but from some other Florida nursery ... the label just said lipstick vine. Great price too at $8.97 but even though it was tempting, I just have no room for anymore plants.

I have two Black Pagoda Lipstick's too ... both of those are the EA plants too. I have cuttings growing in water in my kitchen window and they had blooms last week. I was surprised to see a plant growing in water with blooms but the flowers on the BP aren't really pretty ... they blend right in with the foliage and aren't really noticeable. I guess the BP's foliage makes up for the lack of a pretty bloom though.

Love that Aeschy micranthus, Lin! I'm a sucker for variegation! LOL

If your Aeschy Black Pagoda has plain green flowers, then it's not Black Pagoda, it's longicaulis. Exotic Angel sells Aeschy longicaulis as Black Pagoda, but BP has orange flowers. A. longicaulis has green flowers. Mine is A. longicaulis. Well, I am trying to find a picture of the bloom, but I can't. Give me a few minutes... LOL

Snug, that sure is a nice AV….looks like it’s very happy at your home too. LOL LOVE AVs!!! So much color and beauty in a small package.

When I get ready to carve up the strepto, I’ll post a new thread. I only keep about 12 cuttings for next years basket…..the rest will be freebies. : ) I've tried to keep the basket over the winter.....not good results. I've cut the basket back and kept it......not good. It's best just to start a bunch of cuttings in the winter and plant them altogether in a basket come spring.

Lin, that is a nice looking Lipstick. Is that one variegated or am I seeing things? I wish I had more shade and could grow more outside. I’m really limited. The only really big trees we have are too far away from the house to do much good. Roxy

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't have time to want anything right now.................but come early spring (or maybe winter) I may have to do a trade with you...............dying for the lipstick plant.................I have the pagoda or the other one Rain is talking about but she has never bloomed for me.........

(Zone 1)

Gail, I owe you! You don't have to give me anything! You want A. micranthus? You've got one, my friend! Any time you see any plant I have that you are interested in I hope you will just say the word! You have been so generous with sharing your plants with me the past year, as I know you do with so many folks here in the garden!

Yes Amy, you are right, it's not BP, it's the A. longicaulis with the ugly greenish flowers that blend in with the foliage so you don't even notice them. I think you or someone posted about the flower colors awhile back. I need to have my photo's in PF moved from BP to the longicaulis listing. The foliage on both look a lot alike to my old eyes.

Lovely blooms, Ladies!

Susan: So sorry to hear about your BIL. Yes, that is so young but I guess he was needed in heaven.

My next door neighbors had to make an emergency trip to N.Y. last week. Her youngest sister had breast cancer about ten years ago and the cancer came back and spread to her liver and spine. She had been paralyzed and even vocal chords were paralyzed, she couldn't speak, or even eat because she couldn't swallow. She was in the hospital and they were just assisting with comfort measures and my neighbors got a call that they better come because they didn't expect her to last through the weekend. So, they went up for a week, preparing for a funeral and right before they flew back to Florida, her sister all of a sudden got her speech back, paralysis was gone and she was able to eat, speak and move around. The nurses and doctors were astounded and said they didn't know why it happened. Well, my neighbors got a call last night that her sister had passed away. So, they are flying back up to N.Y. for the funeral. I know God has a plan and I think he gave her speech back just so she could have a few last days with her family.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thank you Lin, I do agree that God has his plans and when it is our time it is our time.. He went fast and she was glad for that...
I am having problems uploading pictures so I will try a few more then if not I will try later...

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Sue, your plants are beautiful. I have to learn to recognize them by flowers and leaves. All I know are epicia and african violets. Those I can figure out. I don't know anything about the rest. They are all beautiful, though. I'll have to take notes on the names and search the net for them.
Is the epicia with the pink bloom 'Star of Bethlehem'?. It sure is pretty. I like the yellow flowered epicia too. All the flowers are georgeous!!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

And.............when you get the leaf, Jim............you can grow one and give a leaf to me......she is outstanding as a strep!
