Nother Hunky Roo...Chat-a-Doodle-Doo #6

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Morning Kathy...I am so sorry to hear you lost some of your birds...That is another reason I am waiting to get mine...My Brooder is very secure, but I want to be sure the pens will be too...I have decided to cement the bases in the ground with wire under them to prevent digging...and that will take more time and money than I have at the moment...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh Dusty, I see the vision.. that will be so pretty and peacful when you finish.. well if you ever finish.. does a gardner EVER finish.. they just keep rearranging things..

I am finding I am doing that with my poor chickens.. LOL

Today, the entire animal area is flooded.. well, I hate to use that word because right now people envision waist deep water.. it is less than a foot, but all the coops are mucky.. not under water.. but really wet.. the girls are all wet.. why the heck won't they go inside? The silkies have 3 stories.. the top being enclosed on 3 sides.. why not go up there and be warm? I know they have pea-brains.. but can't they use them?? should I be thinking for them.. or should I just stop worring.. heck they are only chickens... ;-(

At least the babies are in the garage nice and warm!

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

that is a smart decision dusty.

Clarksburg, MO

Well the wind is coming. I just had a chicken blown over. No kidding. It was the funniest thing but not so funny. I guess house work would be something that we could do but why if we can even possibly get outside (I hate housework!).

We are going to finish up our latest hoop house today once DH gets off work. My Cochin chicks are two week old and starting to make my house smell like a barn.

Need about another 5 hoophouses for breeding pens ut they will have to wait for more money. i feel you pain Dusty. Big plans and little wallets! The story of my life.

gee whiz, my pc is down a week and look what happens???!!! i feel like patchouli, when will i ever catch up....

Clarksburg, MO

Well I noticed that you hadn't been on here for a awile TF and just thought that oyu had got busy. Glad to have you back.

Sheila

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

busy? LOL...

OK, lets see.... oh, yes, BBR is a COLOR, can be Game, OEG, etc. i have a nice rose combed roo who is BBR his father is my Jersey Giant [Black] and mother a RC Brown Leghorn. he is a delight! who wants him? tall and leggy and light weight and already covering hens... nice long waddles and perfect Rose comb. grownut you need him and my ameracauna for your breeding program. she has nice green legs, and is grayish/mottled, so likely has a black gene and a diluted gene... right?

now, Jacobs Cave, that is in three weeks, right? still working on that... anyone want a specific chicken, speak up before i sell them h ere...

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Mine too Sheila...but with the addition of my new patient here, it will take up some of the slack, and give me a chance at a job change, and more home time as well...90% of my problem is being able to be home to get this stuff done...and when I am home, I am so dog tired, I don't feel like doing it...Paul is going to pay room & board, and that will be a great help so that I can go find another job that is close to home rather than 120 mile round trip and 2 hours a day travel...I am mid 60's now, and I am tired...I have worked since I was 15 yrs old...I would like some more home time to do the things I need to do as well as the things I enjoy...
I have wanted to be back on a farm for many years so I can have my veggie garden, and my chickens...Selling eggs will pay for feed, so they will carry their own weight, not to mention providing meat that we like to eat...I hate having to wait to get them, but I would be devastated if anything happened to them, both financially and emotionally, so it is best just to wait and take my time getting them a secure homeplace...I can work inside this winter getting the nest boxes built, and the roosts fixed up...There is a small potbelly stove in the milk house that I am going to ask the farmer for to put in the brooder house...All it needs is the stovepipe...The hole is already there for it in the south wall...I can get long burning coal for overnight in the event the temps drop that severely...
There are exhaust fans in the wall for summer too...Whoever built it and designed it, did a terrific job on it...Once Everything is out of there, it will easily hold 50 birds in comfort...I will use the big metal trash cans to store the feed in there, so everything will be a snap to care for... especially with that cement floor for easy bedding change, and my garden right outside the door to dump it in... LOL

We have some serious wind going on here too...I'm sure if I did have a chicken it would need an anchor tied to it to keep it from blowing up into the next county!!!

OMG frans that is bad, good thing you let them out. Poor babies.

Clarksburg, MO

Frans -

I feel your pain. I have had to put lifejackets on the flock to get them to come outside. But will add that they look good in Orange and are easy to spot. LOL

Sheila

P.S. Had 6 inches of rain in the past 48 hrs

Foley, MO

All this rain is causing the the hills and gutters to wash over the roadways. You need four wheel drive just to get over this stuff!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Ummm...where is GROWNUT?

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

eityher hiding from the rain or the chicken fariy?

Clarkson, KY

Grownut has not had internet service in KY since Ike hit Texas!!! I do not understand. We are in severe DROUGHT conditions at my house having gotten not more than 3" of rain total in 5 months. Didn't get enough from Ike to wet the roadways. I would love to take some of your rain off your hands! Prayed and prayed for rain, got windstorms.

Hope all of you are well and managing to stay afloat. Saw on someone else's computer about Frans poor babies but couldn't access my account as the password was stored here at home. Just stay away from the rivers...don't want to even think about what will happen when all this water gets into the Mississippi.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Glad you are ok hun. Glad you are back. I hope you get some rain real soon.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Good to hear from you Grownut - hope you are OK and wishing for rain for you. Did any chickens get blown away in the winds? Any damage?

Clarkson, KY

Nothing to speak of here. There was a good deal of power outage/downed power pole trouble just north of us.

Clarkson, KY

New cravings just hit me...If I cross a blue JG roo with a couple of my barred babes and then go fer the green egg genetics -What then!! That great JG place TF sent me is 90 min away...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

oooh, are you coming to Missouri? i have a couple of her roos, and they are almost breeding age... of course, she IS closer LOL... yep, get what you want, then breed in the green gene, sounds right to me!

Clarkson, KY

I sooooooo want to but I've pretty much used up my road trip miles. But I lie awake thinking up excuses and ways to get there. Wanna take my 'silver splash' and a wheel of cheese. And Lady Lacey

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh come ON Grownut, we need ya there!

Clarkson, KY

Just help me think up a reason DD and I need to go and leave DH critter-sitting. He has work which he WON'T take off from.

DD sitting here saying we HAVE to go to feel all the wattles....HMMM...needs a little work.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Errr...feel the wattles....hmmm...that's an original reason to go.

Well, I think that it would be a "nice break" for DH to have the time to himself, and besides, you can bring him back one of his favorite ___________. (you fill in the blank, figure out something you can bring back).

Plus, it will be a learning experience for DD, and he would not want to deprive her of a learning experience.

Clarkson, KY

getting clooser. CF?... Hiiiiiiide!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Yes Grow you need to be there. i wish all of you can make it.

Clarkson, KY

I'm thinkin'. It's DD's fall break...

Foley, MO

Anyone bringing a red silkie hen or an americauna/easter egger hen?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I might be able to bring an EE chick.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

how about a red frizzled cochin?

londonderry, Australia

sounds good

Clarksburg, MO

I say yes to the red frizzle cochin if it is large fowl.

Sheila

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)
