She's About To..........#16

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I wait until about November after we have gotten cold and stay that way and I do bury the bud union under soil and mulch and then dig it back out in March before the rains and it warms up too much. I truely believe in burying the bud union. I live on a hill out in the country and winds are awful here and I really think it helps with the rocking around and the heaving of the soil. But if you have the knockouts you don't need to do anything. They come back from the root stock is my understanding. I have a friend up here by me who just chopped the heck out of her knockouts last spring and in a month you couldn't even tell it. The only time I have heard of anyone losing those is one spring and these were only 1 year old plants, in Feb we hit the 60's and higher for a couple of weeks and all the roses budded out and then we dropped to 17 for a week straight and that is the only time I have ever heard of anyone losing a knockout, but they were really new plants going into winter. That year my iris didn't even bloom.

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the plummie info Joyce maybe I should wait until spring to start with one. Louise, I started with roses last year and the only ones that came back well are the ones where I put the bud union ½ in or just on top of the ground. I lost 3 or 4 but I planted late as they were all end of the season clearances. I put them in the ground the same as pot level and found out this spring that I should not have.

Morning Glad to hear our Texas Hotties are still ok! BBL

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Smilin BIG :) cept no Nadine posts here since last night.. Goodness, I'm sorry I pooped out on you hotties last night, (didn't freeze my bra, did ya?) (((Beck and Karen))) you girls are hunkered down, keeping the light or candles burning.. Brave, bold hotties you are! What a mess ol Ike has caused... I saw a sign on the tube last night... someone had painted : Go Away Ike, Tina's not Here. Let's hope this is the last of em for this season. Phew Joyce, so glad you are intact. (((Joyce))) Donna, I think they grow as a houseplant, Clemen said they keep green leaves.. but hon, they ARE considered tropical... If you can just move those hardy perennials to a protected area, on the south, next to a foundation, the just let the leaves pile up around them, might have to help a little but if they are hardy to your area, I bet they would winter over just fine, protected. Then plop them in the ground next spring. I've dug in pots of hosta like that, cause I didn't know where I wanted their permanent home to be. And LOOK at your lovely orchids, "bloom 2-3 times a year", Mine hasn't bloomed since the blooms it had when I got it off the clearance rack at Lowe's, 2 or 3 years ago, but you know me, still might get around to giving it more attention....someday. lol I'm comfy trying to grow any tropical I can here in the wheat state, it's a challenge, who'll give out first... the plant or my ability to get muscles to help move things in and out with the seasons.. although Drews friend Brandon stopped by last night to make sure Drew was okay (didn't have his cel#) told me he'd gladly help when the time comes.... and I may take him up on it.. Sweet Becky and Karen, Nadine.. you are in my thoughts and prayers today... check in when you can.. And now things are better this a.m., coffee with the Hotties,, Ahh life IS good! XO

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Another question, I only bought one rose this year, I got it bare rooted in the spring and started it in a large pot. It has done really well and grown into the pot, but I can’t dig a hole big enough to accommodate it this fall. Does anyone know if it will survive in the pot outside in the yard , or out under the deck, or in the shed?

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I do have about eight different roses and they are doing ok. The really nice one is planted in too much shade to bloom well lol. My Don Juan which is my favorite just keeps dying back so has not gotten too big. I planted a queen elizabeth climber this year that is huge! Hope it doesn't die back too much. I also planted a wild blue yonder that is doing great so far.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Now look at all them posts while I was composing... more coffee.. :) Morning Ladies! Gorgeous rose Donna!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I would put it in the shed or wrap it with something 2/3 up.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Morning Bonnie how is the tootsie? I am watching the weather channel to see what our sissies are getting.

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Hope are you girls in Texas are hanging in there....
And staying safe and Dry...

We paid $343.00 to fill our 100 lb tank a couple months ago...
It's quite ridiculous....

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Morning Phyllis! Thanks Louise, I have it air-healing right now, looks kinda like it's p-owed at me me but looks like it's healing and they whole experience wasn't worth all the fuss.. I'm such a baby when it comes to stuff like that.. lol

(Cathy), MO

Morning everyone and I'm glad to see all the hotties from the south checking in. I was up late last night but I was getting boxes and labels etc ready for the hyacinths when they get here today. I'm as ready as I will be so bring on the bulbs! Got around 1500 coming in to divide up and send out.

Joyce I got some cuttings from the same plummie coop and mine didn't bloom true either. Only had blooms on 3 of them but none of them was the color marked. I did get one in trade last fall and overwintered it. I kept it in it's pot, in low light and didn't water much at all. Maybe a little once a month? It made it fine.

How's the toe Bonnie?

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

We paid 700.00 last year !

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Donna. I've kept roses on planters before and they have been fine. But your zone is colder than mine, maybe trow some burlap on top to protect her.

Hey bonnie how is your gorgeous toe this morninng?

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Thanks AuntB for your word of wisdom on the hardy plants. I was thinking the same thing when I got out of the car last night. Another emergency visit to the Chrio yesterday, Hanna did more damaged than I thought. Very bad news as far as digging holes is concerned. According to him there will be NONE of that unless I want to be in bed until Christmas or later. Here is my story sad but true
25 hardy Hibs
15 Clematis
40 Daylilies
1 Rosebush
15 hosta
10 Monkshood
3 P something (that flowering hardy that goes in with hosta)
3 Hydrangeas
At least 75 lilies (Orientals, Asiatic and OP) all in pots
Some one and twos that I either can’t spell or can’t remember the names. I haven’t mentioned the bulbs and tubers that have to be dug up and taken in nor the tropicals that have to go in the basement. I’m in big trouble here and I can only push SIL abuse so far, as it is he will have to do the AC units and the furniture.
No laughing now, last fall I put in over 350 clearanced plants. I was still pick axing holes on Haloween.
Oh yeah, just so you know I’m not crazy, I have not bought a plant since July. These were all started in the spring bare rooted.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Morning Clemen honey! Everyone is still sleeping in my house. I have already gone out and checked on the plants and had cups of coffee!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Donna, being a single hottie like you, this winters prospects are looking very grim. Me and Debbie the bookkeeper are presenting our delimma to the boss next week, again. Lease on the office runs out in 2010, he's already said we'll all start working from home then... well, me and Debbie are paid the least, drive the furthest and are in the office 2X as long as the uppity-ups and honestly we will be able to make it to work (barely) OR heat our homes... now which would he choose if he was in our monetary situ??? Problem is, I've warned him this spring of what was coming and it's all just swept under the rug... concern from him would mean he had to think about someone besides himself for a couple minutes.. oh well, I know I'll figure something out.. I did apply for a position at Martin Tractor and that is still on the burner.. he doesn't know, but he might be a little more willing to hear me when he knows I AM that serious. I mean he'd be forced to have his over-paid ego boosters to do some real work...10 yrs I've worked for him, last 5 I managed this part of his little "empire" and I get to be worried about being warm? I sense some discrimination... but that's a whole nother can of worms... I just want to be comfortable, not live like royalty, so I either work from home or I won't be able to pay for gas to drive to work or heat my house... just aint right, we live in America... and I'm a hard conscientious worker.. AND I'm so much more than a "secretary" - I run his company and he won't acknowledge that.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh Donna wish I lived close I would come and help you!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh Bonnie it would be such a lovely world if things were fair! Been there honey is some ways. Used to work for a company training managers all hired making more money than me and they were all men!

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Oh, takes me so long to write (like AuntB) I got some answers before I posted all. Thanks so much hotties.

Good morning to all

Yes oil will be a problem this season, just got my first fill up this week and it was $729. The tank is 200 gal and it was not empty.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Louise, my plants are saying HEY AUNT B!!! Enough, Enough water, ma'am... thanks, but we're trying to give you beautiful blooms here! Morning dear Cat, you are a glutton my dear... lol bless you for taking on those coops! (alls still quiet here, too, Mel was up when I peeled myself off the couch last night)

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Well I will check in later, off to go to an auction this morning. Hubby came down with the crud finally. We all have had it here. Mine about a month and a half ago. He still wants to go though...silly guy.

(Cathy), MO

Morning Bonnie. BUT...just think of all the bargains we get in the coops! LOL Too many!! It's addictive

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Donna, we'd be quite a pair, you with your back and me with my knees, but since I've lost about 20 lbs and take my concoction every morning, I'm better, and I do get a small hole dug in the ground, one way or another.. but them large holes aren't even possible with my soil, so I just do what I can, but I'd sure be right there if I could.. maybe we could stand at the road and flash 'something' so the muscles would stop, but we'd get it all in somehow ;) Just imagine that, Donna! LOL

(Cathy), MO

Have a good morning all. I'll be back later

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

YaHOO! Hurricane Hotties! Sounds like things are lookin up at least for now☺I am bummed out to have missed the pajama party☻Be safe all Hotties♥SeeYa later☺

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Yes AuntB my situation is similar but working from home is not an option. Took me years to get on my feet after the big D but I did it. I went from a general office position to Distribution manager. But that co went down and was bought out, I’m stayed with the buyer but there was no manager slot available so I took a lower position because they need me for the product line from the other company they did not touch my salary. But now the new company is going down and I have not seen an increase in years so I’m going to have to go looking a little closer to home. We move the business an additional 20 miles in the wrong direction last winter so now my round trip is just under 100 mile and the gas for my SUV is out of control.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Hurry back Cat. Going to the tube for Ike updates, you belles hold on to yer brugs! ((((((Becky)))))) you're like me protecting lil Cassie's Curls Donna sent me this summer, we're just sentimental, but I say, as long as I (or Mel) can lift them, and they'll fit inside, some of them ARE more precious cause where they came from.. We're ALL such awesome Hotties! Go Hotties, Go Hotties! Becky the Charlie I kept grew up tall, about 4 ft or more and has 3 blooms, too! You lil sweetie! I sure hope you guys are thru the worst... I wouldn't even want to look outside when it's over, but I guess I would have to, to figure out what I could save or something.. just seems so disasterous(sp)..

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Well AuntB we do make a pair but I don’t think I could attract any mussels. I’ve managed to put on 60 lbs in the last 4 years. 30 was intentional, got down to just under 100 lbs (5' 8" tall) just before I gave X #2 the boot, it was either dump him or kill myself over the stress he caused. The second 30 lbs I can attribute to the steroids, if I’d known I was going to become anaphylactic with allergies I would not have tried so hard to gain the first 30.
BTW I'm still running a couple of post behind.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Donna, that doesn't have anything to do with snaggin some "strange muscles" lol, you are still a beautiful woman, just more of you to love! I go up and down with my weight since the "change", but I'm determined to keep it down since it made my knees feel 100% better. I so miss digging at will. I'd play like one of the 7 dwarfs (not dopey or sneezy) and dig an area out and replace with my own soil mix, but alas, no more. I'm a potter, now.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Morning y'all.
Answering your question AuntB.. I've been busy with swaps! But lurking here and enjoying the view and of course the unheard chuckles as well. So, you think my variegated is a Maya. Wow..
Just to remind everyone, sometimes an old name can be your most reliable. This is CG. It never disappoint me.

One more for the eyes... Dream Angel..
Got her from Alice Harris, and she's only 3 ft. tall, but gives out a good number of blooms.

My 'bruggydaddy' says it's time to go..
Y'all hotties doing a good job at keeping the love of brugs circulating!
Have a good day!

Minneapolis, MN

Well all you Hotties sure can chat. Took me an hour just to catch up. Glad so far, all have come through with no serious outcomes from Ike? AuntB, what if anything, did you do for your knees? Just recently mine went from nothing really wrong with them, to sounds like crunching celophane wrap and sheer blinding off the charts pain. I maybe could lose 10-20 lbs but don't consider myself really that overweight.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Pretty blooms Jaye!!

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Morning, barely. I guess I'm really too old for Jammie Parties anymore. But I woke up again at three and did manage to catch Beck on. Anyway, there is a checkin thread under the weather forum and no word yet from Beck, Nadine, or Sandy. They were begging Sandy to get out and giving her emergency #s to call to get help to get out, but no answer was received. Karen, soo glad to hear you're okay so far.

I have a catered football game today at 6, so got to get busy here. Blackened grilled chicken, new potato salad and baked beans for the cater. I will make extra so Keith and I will have the same supper.

Louise, I have a Don Juan and just love it. I whack it back every year and it just gets bigger and bigger. My only other rose I bought this year was an Ebb Tide. It's barely hanging in there. It is supposed to have these deep purple blooms, but so far they are a very light purple. Still, unusual looking, but it did not grow very well.

And here is my Y'd brug, still no bud. I'll check in later as I get stuff prepared. Take care, all. Lov, Peg

That dream angel is incredible! Peg I have wild blue yonder, while it is lovely and smells great I think you would have to take a few shots of tequila and squint to call that blue. Don't really get how they can call a flower blue when it isn't even close.

I just talked with Beck. Her and Lyle are okay, though she says it looks like a "war zone." They do have a generator in the camper. She was able to get through to the NH and her mom is okay, also.

TTYL, still cooking! Peg
