1-2-3 AWWW. Get her started early Dyane... Love it when they sleep well.
Fall Planting, so what's on your list?
She was in her little fleece sleeping bag and she was cozy and contented for hours!
I love to sleep when it is a little on the cool side, so I can cozy up in blankets. sigh
Nice combination of colors, Victor---love the Silver Mist---well named. Someone gave me a bunch of Christmas cactus cuttings--have to pot them up. My lemon trees are in for good---very yellow looking--must dose them with Miracid. Couldn't get to anything this weekend---had family for my brother's birthday--baked him a lemon raspberry sponge cake--that was enough work!
Sounds delish!!! I need to look into more shrubby, treey areas. The yard needs more 'bones'.
thanks victor - i'll post the name of the cedar i picked up when i back home - traveling all week for work - working on sundays is not my idea fo fun. i got bushes to plant!!
hmm...I planted like 50 cloves of garlic (two by each rose) last weekend. I did not remember the tip about soaking in baking soda...dang! Oh well....next year. This is why I need a good to-do list online!
I had my clematis substituted for Niobe to by Parks...but at least it is the right color ;-) I think I've had a better experience with them than most, just got three double-knockouts from them that were gorgeous, and we did the Park tomato seedling sampler in the summer...the Park Whoppers were the best tomatoes we had...huge and better color/texture than all the heirlooms we grew...plus my nepeta was huge and did great from them....so I still buy from those guys along with Bluestone depending on what I'm looking for....However they have not shipped my Comte. De Bouchard clematis...hopefully comes while I can still dig!
Just had our first freeze.....of the season.....
Finished planting the Daffodils, Tulips and the Muscari collection (100 bulbs) from John Scheeper's. Daylilies are in now too. Dangerous time, it's still plenty warm enough for planting and I've run out of plants and bulbs! Hmmm...did I hear sale??? LOL
IrisMA-I ordered a Peony from Scheeper's (Bowl of Beauty) this year that looked pretty small too. I just planted it but I'll stick to the specialists for Peonies from now on. I bought 3 gorgeous Peonies from Adelman Peony Gardens (Elsa Sass, Madame de Verneville, & Old Rose Dandy) this year that were substantially larger, more hydrated and had more eyes than the one from Scheeper's. I guess the true test will come in the spring.
I don't expect a new peony to bloom the first yr., but I expect it to have a chance. As I have posted Sheepers is trying, they are sending a second plant. The bulbs were fine, the daffidil 'Decoy' espceically large & good, some double pieces.
so disappointing when a mail order doesn't work out... and sometimes we don't know until the next year they are gone.. such a bummer
knew when I saw this one--they were very polite on the phone, so with luck it will strighten out. Did call Klems's Song Sparrow so have another plant coming as well. We don't have too much sun for new peonies as all the sunny spots have iris in them.
Your Bowl of Beauty is gorgeous. We shall see what happens with mine. I have a Peony 'Kansas' that I'm waiting to see bloom. Next spring will be its third year, fingers crossed.
The bulbs I received from Scheeper's were excellent. Very large and lots of bulblets on many of them. I would recommend them for bulbs but not for Peonies.
Wow, Thom, ambitious plans! Nice. I, too, have some ambitious plans for my gardens. I got lots done this year, and hopefully will get more done next year. I may not take any trips next year, may just use my vaca time to work in my gardens. :-) Can't wait!
Patti, what great prices you got at that coop! Where is it? I would love to get some stuff from them, especially the DL's. Don't usually buy peonies, though I have some very nice ones, and I love them. My friend Karen collects peonies.
Candyce, I know what you mean when you say "I'll never be able to accomplish all that you guys accomplish. But, I try my darndest!!!" I feel the same way. If only I could afford to do less work at my job and more work in my gardens, then I may actually get things accomplished.
I was at a local garden center this past Saturday called Kennedy's Country Gardens in Scituate, MA (love that place!), and they have all their perennials on sale for 30% off now, and selected ones are 50-75% off. I bought a bunch at the latter price, and I got about 4 pots for $4 each, 2 for $2, and one for $8. I got a Japanese primrose, about 4 salvias ('East Friesland', 'Eveline', and another that I can't remember the name of) a baptesia, a miniature yarrow, a Veronica called 'Pink Panther', and a couple other things I can't recall off-hand. I don't know where I'm planting all these things, but I'm sure I'll be able to tuck them in somewhere. May end up moving them next year.
LOL! Robindog, I don't know about young, as with all my aches and pains from gardening I feel older by the day, but definitely broke.
I don't know about Parks, but Victor, I have to say that Wayside is way overpriced for what you get. White Flower Farms mail order plants are very disappointing according to my friend Karen. She ordered some clematis, among other things for them. Got very small plants. Then some of the local nurseries had potted plants from them, very nice looking ones, but not cheap. The same clematis she got from them were being sold there for about the same price, and much bigger, much nicer looking plants. I will not order from them, and neither will she.
My friend Karen orders many peonies from Gilbert H. Wilds, and she says they are great quality, but I've heard their daylilies are puny little things.
I have been working on renovating some daylily beds. I have been redigging them to get rid of all the quack grass roots (always a battle with that stuff) and adding compost, then repositioning the DL's according to size. Also adding some new DL's and my new perennial purchases from this past summer and this fall. It's coming along nicely, but I hope I can get everything done before it gets too cold. Well, I'll have a lot of brush removal/cutting to do when I can no longer dig in my gardens. Lots of weeding yet to do, as well, and fall clean-up. Never ending, my to-do list.
Okay, phew! I think I covered everything.
Karen
Karen, all the coops that I join are on DG coop forum. Most are beyond great. A couple have been less so. One lady took the money, got the plants, never shipped them. But she eventually made good by borrowing money from her mom. Meanwhile she was selling them on ebay. Another just got too big for the lady to ship out in a timely manner. Many plants died, but she did pay me back too and her intentions were honerable. I think the first lady was a chronic liar and con artist. But I love doing them. With the exception of me helping with spreadsheets on a few of them, I do nothing except get cheap plants. Others have been burned beyond partisapating any more. But not me. I got Bulbs from a Van Engelen coop yesterday and one from Bleek's Eflowergarden that saved me a ton of money. Bleek ships his coops direct so shipping is just one way. Money and orders go to the host.

I am amazed at the number & variety of plants that you use in your garden.
Thanks for the info, Patti. I have never tried a coop before. I think I've gotten way too much so far this year. I have a lot to plant yet, so I'm gonna wait till spring to get anything more. In fact, I think I will have to put some of my DL's in my sisters veggie garden for the winter, as it's getting late here, and I only have 2 full days a week to get work done. I have lots of space for DL's, but the problem is that the beds need to be made. Double digging and working in compost takes lots of time. I have to be sure no roots of quack grass are left behind to sprout. There are always some that do get left behind. The smallest piece will make a new plant. I have been buying DL's from a woman on the LA for spring shipment. She had a lot I wanted, but I knew I wouldn't have time to plant this fall, and she said that holding them for the spring wouldn't be a problem.
Karen
Iris, were you talking about me or Patti? I have more DL's than anything, but I'm a collector of plants. I just love any and all perennials.
Karen
Both of you are great gardeners.
IrisMa, I have a lot of beds, all screaming at the moment for me to get to work on them to put them to bed for the winter. We have 2 1/2 acres and have be busy planting them for the last 25 years. We still haven't touched the back 1/2 acre. Dreaming and scheming. DH just got home from hauling a boat, so we will now go out to the garden together and continue the fall work. Still lots blooming away, even after three days of heavy wind and cool days. Lovely today. Patti
Patti, you definitely have a lot more acreage than I. I only have 1.25 acres, with much of it in gardens. It's mostly only me that takes care of it all, though my youngest sister helps sometimes, mostly with brush cutting and such. She's not into taking care of perennial gardens like I am. I just wish she would help me more with the mowing, as that would free up some of my time for weeding and such. I'd never be able to take care of 2 1/2 acres by myself. If I ever marry again it will have to be to a man who loves gardening as much as I do.
Karen
Good plan!
nutsfordaylily, I could never do the work alone like you. I need a motivator and someone to help tote the clippings that I seem to strew about as I prune. I am very lucky that my DH does love to garden. We do pay to have the yard mowed, but do the rest ourselves. But if I keep adding beds there won't be much left to mow soon. Good Plan.
Carrie, could you get a mower attachment? I could see you whizzing about making cool patterns in a lawn. We need an outing this fall. Music?
DH and I just finished the second day of bringing in the plants to the greenhouse. It is finally done. Everybody is cut back and fertilized and tucked into their winter home. I am exhausted. Too many big clay pots to move. I do still have to put all the callas, caladiums, cannas, and dahlias into storage for the winter and then I will be done with the container world until May. I do have a few things to dig from the garden that I like to bring in as they will keep blooming until Jan in our cool GH. Impatience, nasturtiums, zinnias, portulaca, snaps. salvia etc. just keep on going.
Now on to the bed cleaning. But it is suppose to rain tomorrow. Kind of hope it does as my body can use a rest day. I think the bed cleaning is the most important job of the year. The years I did it poorly, I paid dearly with a messy garden in the spring. More loss of plants and weeds galore. Plus I hate looking at a dead tangled mess all winter long. I also couldn't plant so many bulbs if I didn't totally cut everything back to the ground except shrubs, roses, and lavenders. I hope my DL's and peonies come soon so I can plant them as I clean. Patti
Patti, if I had a mower attachment I wouldn't have to depend on DH so much but I doubt Medicare would spring for that. But music - what a lovely idea! D-mail me about dates and tastes and we'll see what we can come up with!
My bulb co-op box arrived too, but I haven't opened the box yet. I have Miss Fabulous' muscari and Lincolnites sent me DLs and those bulbs I actually paid for all staring at me. I feel guilty already!
I was in the coop from Hades [as I don't think I can say the other word]. I lucked out and actually got plants. Others were not so lucky. I haven't done one since. I would give it another try, but I keep missing them.

Its realllly cold here today but I want to plant the dwarf daffs.Baby Moon and Hwerta
The rest will have to wait a few days until day temps go to th 50's.
The minies are on the south side of the house where its less windy.
I dont' mind planting in the wind if the temps are warmer.
I just got my order from Brent/Becky. I'll have my nieces help me on Saturday.
Anita I just got done with 2 co-ops, one fpr Amaryllis and one for Echinacea's and other plants. The Amaryllis was was smooth & fast! Of course I only wanted 3-5 bulbs. ended up with 12 and dragged Allison into it with me. lol
The other one is for spring delivery(thank goodness!)
This is what I have coming for Spring 2009 already and it hasn't even really snowed here yet!! Can't imagine what my list is going to look like next April!!!!!!!!!!!
Spring 2009
Athyrium Burgundy Lace-2
Echinacea Coral Reef 2
Echinacea Fragrant Angel-2

Euphorbia First Blush-1

Sounds pretty
Now that its daylight I see it's raining, so no bulb planting today until the rain stops, hopefully this afternoon.
Raining , windy and raw here, no planting today for me either.
If the kiddos would only nap at the same time, I might be able to get outside to the gardens closest to the windows! But, alas!! They love to sleep at different times. I am looking forward to next growing season when I can take them both outside with me ~ that is, if I can afford to fence in an area in which they can play, while I play in the gardens.
Same here. I am happy to have a day off. I will catch up on my DG journal and am having my hair done professionally for the first time since 1981. I am even going to get some color....that is a first since before 1981. I have been happy being just a dirty blond for years.
The guy who is doing it cuts my DH hair and is an old friend. He has a most divine secret garden. Dells, streams, paths through a woods that I drive by every day and never knew it was there for years. Truly special. He wanted me to look for ideas. I assured him that I wouldn't find many in my normal reading...Brent and Becky, Van Engelen and DG. Don't expect pictures, I doubt it will help me much, except from the back. It has always been hard to cut the back of my own hair. I have always called my at home hair styling efforts, "personal pruning". We will see if I should have just bought a nice shrub instead of spending the money at the salon. Patti
Rain finally! I put down milky spore, lime, fertilizer and grass seed like two weeks ago and not rain until now...yeah!
Oh, Patti! I love 'personal pruning'!! I used to do that as well, and usually made a terrific mess of it.
I finally (after more than 50 years) found a hair dresser who actually looked at my face type and my lifestyle and came up with a style that is perfect for me. I'm just so bummed, though, that it took so long to actually find a hair dresser like that. Now, if only she could make my very thin and baby fine hair, thick and luxurious! *sigh*
Have fun today!
Candyce, We have the same hair. Off to the slaughter. Patti
very nice Celeste.
Peony from Klem's Song sparrow arrived this morning--huge plant--at least 7 eyes DH says. Will wait until sun hits its spot to plant.
