Fall Planting, so what's on your list?

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi, all. this fall I would like to plant

1. all the perennials from last winter's winter sowing that I haven't planted yet. I think it's time to give up on the annuals unless I can get seeds from them...sigh..
2. the remainder of the perennials from last spring's coops...double sigh...

just so you know, over 200 perennial seedlings were planted from my winter sowing. it's not like they haven't been touched. but there are so many wonderful things still sitting there. I may put them all in a 'nursery' bed together and worry about it next spring if they make it.

fortunately, I didn't go crazy and order a whole lot of new stuff before I realized I'd never get to it. DS came and planted for me

Hostas - August Moon, Hyacintha, Royal Standard, Stained Glass
Daylilies - Mother Nature, Bama Music [free with the purchase of the hostas]

here's one tub out of 5 from my winter sowing

Oh, Jan, so your bags look like they worked! Are they your new great idea? Or will you revert? You have a lot invested....

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

So much to do, so little time left to do it. Now I wish I hadn't ordered so many DL's.....sigh!

man, you all are going to be busy! luckily you don't live up here or you'd be about out of time.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Planted only two plants from my delivery today - busy with the kids. I planted one zenobia and one sedum Blue Spruce.

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

Karen, my sister in law and niece live in Halifax! Nice town.... they have a very woody lot with chickens in the back....

I'm just hoping for good weather this weekend...last was a wash out!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Miles, Halifax is good in some ways but not in others. Of course, they don't call this state Taxachusetts for nothing. Our town just recently put a fee of $50 per household for use of the recycle center. I think recycling is very important, but I think this fee is way too high and unfair to people who live on a fixed income or who don't use the recycle center's services. There are many people in this town who have a private company come and haul away their trash, and they're very angry about having to pay for a service they don't use. Not only that, but this summer they decided they would fine people who kept water in their birdbaths, as it's a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and now we have to get a permit to cut a tree down in our yard. If they could, they would make everyone get a permit for passing gas. LOL!

Evie, I don't know if I'd want to live where they growing season is so short. Every year I wish I could just leave for the winter and go and tend someone else's garden and return here when the weather warms up enough to work in my own.

BTW, miles, I heard the weather for the weekend is supposed to be good, which I'm very happy about, cause I have Sat. thru Mon. off this weekend. Woo hoo!

Karen

South Hamilton, MA

Hasn't the town govt ever heard of mosquito dunks? That would take care of the birdbaths. We are weird here in Hamilton also.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok...I wasn't expecting this today, but someone bless Gavin Petit :-)

This is the first time, EVER, I had DL's delivered and the package had a weight in pounds...lol. 4lb 11oz.

There were some substitions, I hope he made them and didn't send me the wrong ones by mistake. From the list above, take out Passion in Paris, As Time Goes By, Nocturnal Butterfly, and Majestic Heir, and replace them with Gary Colby, Blueberry Baroque, In Too Deep, and Executive Decision!

My back is going to hate me...lol.

This group, there are 26 daylilies. All of them are DF, some are 4-5fans...WooHoo. I now officially have trading/selling power...lol.

I should add to the above post that I will be getting Ken Johnson's (KenDaylily from the LA) order tomorrow or Thursday, there's another 20+, then Cheryl Day's order (my Munson order of almost 20) will be arriving early next week!

Thomaston, CT

Those DL's look beautiful, Thom! Good luck with all the planting! Sorry about that recycling fee----in our town, we probably would pay it because last month they closed our transfer station---I'm sure we'll start to see debris piling up in the wooded areas. CT has very high taxes to begin with & it's getting worse. My DH has been retired over 20 years, I've been retired 10---I can see me at 80 having to work at Dunkin' Donuts!

I can see working at McDonalds! Actually I have applied at a UPS outlet. Partime 20-30 hours a week. Hope I get it as if I made 150-200 bucks a week, we would be RICH!

Speaking of planting - I planted MSIE Beta 8 in the recycling bin. Dont download it.

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

Karen, that fee does seem annoying, not sure why they don't just burry it in the tax bill like everyone else. You wanna talk high taxes, I lived in Cranston, Rhode Island for a couple years, sold my condo there and bought my house in CT. taxes on the same house in RI were about 10k....over three times what I pay in CT...and I have more land...and less people around me (which is a good thing).

Just a heads up guys, last time we started talking taxes we got a spanking from the Admin. We wouldn't want our thread to disappear.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What about Taxus?? Hee hee.

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

Sorry...how about those flowers! MAF

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

lol

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would talk about taxes (or taxus) all day, I just didn't want anyone to get into trouble.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

You're too funny, Victor! Well, all I can say that I wasn't talking about a tax, I was talking about a fee. But no more of that!

I still have shrubs and perennials I bought this past summer that need planting. I have a peanut butter bush (Harlequin claradendron), 'Tiger's Eye' sumac, and 'Wine And Roses' weigelia for shrubs, and a number of perennials. I better get going on planting!

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. Never heard of peanut butter bush! What if you have a peanut allergy?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

you turn brown and grow leaves

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

That's a new one for me also. Any chance there is some chocolate with it, then I know I would HAVE to have it.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, you can get chocolate flowers. The peanut butter bush foliage really does smell like PB, so hence the name. Same with the chocolate flower smelling like chocolate. Put them together and you'll have something yummy!

Karen

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

edit to add: Carrie, I'll be using my new w/s system again. It worked great!

Finally, I got it...praise whomever!!!

Bill, I should have had you give me a visual reference to how much 10 yds of soil is...holy crap-o-la is all I can say. I thought I would be able to move it in a couple of hours HA HA HA HA to me I say, and HA!

I also got my Ken Johnson (KenDaylily from the Lily Auction) order in today. That means one more DL order to go and I'm done, phew...until next year ;-)

The bottom left corner, the really red glowing tree...except for Victor can anyone else guess??? I'll give you a hint, it's the tree (the main one) I was after all season, can 'ya see why I wanted it so bad???

Here are the 11 DL's from Mr. Johnson.

Almost everyone of them were sold as Single Fans, only 1 came as such. Everything else that was sent were DF. Also, a few (4 of them) were sold as DF's, and were sent as TF!!!

Very nice, Thom - congrats! See why I like it so much?!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Here are the seedlings that Mr. Johnson sent!

I'm excited about these crosses, I hope something really neat comes out of them!

great root systems, they should do well.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Victor, I am now officially a believer that everyone should have this guy, or gal. When I purchased it, it still had a couple of flower bracts on it, the smell of the flowers is heavenly, then you move into the Fall foliage display, every single day I walk past it, the colors are a more intense red than the day before!

Here is the light garden that I finally set up. I need 2 more sets of lights for the bottom shelf and then I'm finally done. Now I need to get all of the coleus cuttings, persian shield cuttings, Plecanthrus cuttings, brug cuttings, Iresine cuttings, and begonia cuttings under the lights! Does anyone want to come and visit and help me out??? lol...I make a mean pasta salad :-)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wow, Thom you are going to be 1 busy guy!!! Is that a viburnum? Gorgeous color!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Thom - only 10 yards? I moved 20 of dirt and 20 of mulch:) One wheel barrel at at time - don't look at the pile.

What is the tree - going to a garden center tomorrow 40% off sale.
