Fall Planting, so what's on your list?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thom im jealous! 'Blueberry Lemonade' is one i've been eyeing for a year now and 'Monday Morning Blues' is fairly new!! We need to talk another trade I see! LOL

Patti nice selection and sounds like you will be very busy!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The order arrived. Six boxes. Took me almost 1/2 hour to unpack. Put them outside to be rained on.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

And rained on they will be, Victor.
I woke up to a nice gentle rain this morning, but now, it's very close to pouring!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, they're getting soaked. A few were knocked over this AM.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor it has not started turning yet. last weekend i transpanted a batch of little JM.s i stuck in peat flats and refilled the flats with every seeds from the shirazz. it took two years for the others to germinate - hope the little shirrazz are faster - interested to see if they grow and what they might look like - may not be like the parent.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Well - I pulled out all the iris and daylily from one of my beds - they needed a major thining out. Transplanted and shared most of the daylily -now I need to find homes for the remaining iris. If anyone has any hosta they would like to trade. Below is a pic of the iris - and it is very scented!

I bought a few mums that need planting.

Wow, y'all are so busy! At this point in the season I'm sick of digging and creating new beds.

If anyone is a The Simpsons fan, think of Mojo the helper monkey at the end where he waves his hand is like "eh, you do it". That's me right now :)

Thomaston, CT

Sounds like everyone is busy planting---I'm looking at the gardens trying to visualize something better, but I don't know where to start. We had some hemlocks cut down in the spring & now there's wild asters & goldenrod taking over---I would eventually like it to be DL's & iris, but the thought of clearing that mess gives me second thoughts!

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

Aster and goldenrod sound pretty good to me, though they're just the fall flowers. You may want to wait on clearing it and see what else you get next year. You might get some other wildflowers you want. Then you know what you want to keep (but maybe move) and what to get rid of.

Just an idea...plus, it puts off the work til next year! :)

South Hamilton, MA

I can't wait until my 'Do Tell' peony arrives. Its spot is waiting.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I love goldenrod and asters growing wild in the fields - so pretty in the fall, not sure about in the garden though.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They can both get out of hand. Goldenrod is a major spreader in my garden.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Patti, I know that would be an excellent gift for your DH! He'd love it.

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok Victor, what did ya get? I'm so excited to hear...

South Hamilton, MA

We have several different types of golden rod spread all over the former pasture. Great at this time of yr when so much is shutting down.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I do like the golden rod and asters a lot. I have many of both here, as well as all my more well behaved crowd of plants.

Robin, I would just start clearing out and see how it looks. Do a little at a time. I know how overwhelming it can get. I've been there myself, and it still gets overwhelming. I really have more that I can take care of on my own, and I'm telling you, there are so many different things pulling me in so many different directions at once. All I can say is with so much to do, I never get bored of the same old thing. If I get bored of one project I can go to another. I always get back to the other projects eventually. I'm always working on a number of projects at one time. Part of my ADD I guess.

I received a few DL orders the other day. Have to get planting. Can't do much with all the rain.

We are in the middle of a monsoon. The dirt people cancelled :-(

Now, I have no idea what the heck to do. There is another source that I can get soil from, but it's unscreened topsoil...which, quite frankly at $27 a scoop I don't want. I'm going to have to reschedule for my next weekend off. Which will not be until the weekend of October 11th :-/

I think I'm just going to put all of the pots together and put the sprinkler on a timer...lol.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

We've had the same bad weather - frustrating to say the least. Especially, when you only have weekends to get your yard work done. I feel your pain.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

so sorry Thom.... hope it works out for you

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I feel your pain, too, Thom. I also only have weekends to work in my gardens. Actually I have Sat. and Mon. off, and 2 Sun. a month I start at 3 instead of 12, so it gives me a little more time. Then I have time before work on Tues., as I start at 12, and then I also have time Tues. and Wed. evenings, as I get off at 5 on those days, but the other days I get off at 7, and now the sun is already down when I get off work. I hate that. We had a monsoon here yesterday. So far no rain yet today, but we're expecting more till tomorrow morning. Well, at least I have Mon. to work in the gardens if the weather doesn't take a turn for the worse.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

So sorry, Thom. Do you get the long weekend in Oct.? I know you have been soooo looking forward to this delivery.

My allium order arrived today from a co-op. WOOHOO!!! I have been wanting some gladiators or Lucille Balls for a few years since seeing them in a friend's garden in Michigan.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi Thom,

The list is way up the thread. All soaked up a lot of rain! I'll start planting on Monday.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Oye, don't know how I missed it :-/

I'm jealous...lol. About 3-4 hours after the soil drop was cancelled, it cleared up, no rain, no nothing :-(

This means another 2 weeks...I just want the darn DIRT...egad. lol.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Just saw this thread. It's nice to see that I'm in good company. Makes me feel less crazy to think that I'm not the only one having boxes delivered daily!

So far, this fall I've planted:
2 Lilacs
3 Campanula
1 Echinacea
3 Peonies
4 Daylilies
20 Tall Bearded Iris
9 Standard Dwarf Bearded Iris
2 Intermediate Bearded Iris

Still waiting to plant:
40 Lilies (Asiatic, Orienpet & LA)
91 Allium bulbs
160 Daffodils
75 Hyacinths
25 Daylilies
5 Hosta
1 Peony
10 Iris
100 Muscari
70 Tulips

In addition, I have 50 Paperwhites & 18 Amaryllis to pot up for gifts!

(Zone 4a)

You guys have such great ideas! I am sad to say - I didn't plant anything new other than some more tulips - I have run out of room in my little yard! I am so envious of you all who have such great big yards to work with. I am happy though with what I have done with the space I have.....next house will certainly have a bigger yard! LOL

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I thnk all we have left to do is to prepare the beds for their winter's nap. We may be thinning some at the RU, so be prepared!!

Thomaston, CT

Wow, Dyane, all that planting & with a new baby to boot! I feel very lazy--will try to take a photo of the area I need to clear--it is south-facing, so sun lovers could go there.

South Hamilton, MA

Planting isn't all to do in the fall; cut the peony foliage this afternoon.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Er, I think I killed a peony this summer. They sold them at Home Depot this spring, so I bought one, then I found out you're only supposed to plant them in the fall. So I kept it aside all summer but it looks kind of dead now - is that normal?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Carrie, they are tough, maybe not a tough as you, but almost, so stick it in the ground, but not deep. About 2" of dirt above the eyes, which if it is dead will be non existant and in some sun. They like an acidic soil, and don't plant them where they have to fight for root space when they are little. But worth a try no matter what. Good luck, Patti

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, thank you, Patti! Humousy, acidic soil, hunh? I fell for it because of the name, "Shirley Temple". When DD#2 was tiny, like 2, 3, 4 she had golden blond ringlets and ladies used to stop her in shopping malls or on the street and say "you look just like Shirley Temple!" At age 3, she had no idea who that was; I am not sure she does to this day. It used to make her so mad! "I'm NOT Shirley Temple, I'm just plain me."

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Yeah, Robin. I started to feel like maybe I made a mistake with all my ordering but DH assures me that we'll get them all in the ground. He's such a good sport. Most of them are bulbs which can be done in a weekend or two. Luckily I have my mother around to help babysit while we go out and plant. It's all worthwhile when the show starts in Spring!!!!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Aww, what a nice DH!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

And a nice mom!

Woodstock Valley, CT(Zone 5b)

5 Artemesia 'silver brocade'
4 Magnus Echiniceas

I think that is it for now....wow no wonder I'm so busy that is a lot....Miles

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Hi Miles!
You sound like you have just as much on your fall planting plate as the rest of us, so you are gonna fit right in! Welcome to the 'family'!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Wow, Miles, and I thought I had a lot. Well, I still do. Have to get stuff planted, and not much time to do it.

Karen
