She's About To..........#14

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello hotties, LOL I spend all my spare time reading this forum. As to what is happening with my brugs that you sent me, well I'm not sure. They are growing, dropping leaves and producing new leaves. I'm talking to them, maybe that is what they don't like and are trying to show me by becomming naked. Still, I love the plants and at this time don't think that I could ever get to many, especially if they will someday look like yours do. So many beautiful blooms. I do not know the difference in any of them, so much to learn.
Anyone in the storms way, I pray for your safety and for the safety of all your property.
Ray went to Dr. for a followup this morning and report is wonderful. The cancer was contained in the one kidney.....but..because of the type, it can pop up anywhere so Ray has to have his bladder checked every 4 months. Thank you all for your prayers. Prayer does work. God is good.
Love to all, Faye

(Cathy), MO

Hi Faye! Glad the report was good. Sending hugs!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh Faye! Wonderful news on Ray! Power of prayer and positive thinking. We are blessed. Cat is right on blooms pointing.. Brugmansia- Devil trumpet - blooms nod or point down (towards where the devil is), Datura- Angel trumpet - blooms point up (sometimes bend down cause triple blooms can get heavy for the plant to hold up).. I still say you have what I call moon bush or Datura Stramonium-Jimson Weed, Sandra. There is datura inoxia and datura metel, it was in the link I posted above, bottom left on the page that comes up. The metel is also called Belle Blanche Datura. Datura is like the annual form of Brugmansia - it hasn't been that many years ago, they were catagorized as the same plants..... the leaves of datura are more shiny where brug leaves can be considered almost "fuzzy". I'm sorry I can't explain it better, but yes they are related and both are poisonous. I saw a brug in Birds and Blooms or one of my mags that they called datura.. a couple issues later someone had called them on it and they printed an apology about the mistake.

Minneapolis, MN

Hi Cat, yes I made it. LOL. I also Googled "Moon Flower" sometime around the first of June because I had given one of the plants that just sprout up to a neighbor. Her husband's mother came for a visit and said Uh Oh, did you know that plant is poisonous so when he told me, I looked it up and yes, indeed everything about this plant is poisonous. Can cause hallucinations and I guess for years and years teens growing up tried to make tea out of it and unless treated in an emergency room it can be fatal. The first time Amiyah shows any kind of interest towards any of them well, she doesn't get too close because of the bees. She is more interested in picking my vegetables whether they are ready are not. But at 21 months I sure am proud. She eats Cherry Tomatoes, green beans and Fried Zuchinni like a trooper and I make her a red sauce from my canned tomatoes, peppers, zuc's, celery, mushrooms, onions any thing that I don't go to waste, blend it up so there are no chunks and she's gotten in her veggies. Is Cleman around today? I just wanted to mention to him that was my dad's name too. He's gone but every year I plant those marigolds with the tomatoes and their names are Clem Sr. Clem Jr. and Clem III. I inherited those green thumbs from him. And there going to be passed down to this one.

Hello Hotties!!!

Okay, so here I am, been MIA for quite awhile, and had to track ya'll down :o( I'm having a bit of a brug EMERGENCY!! sniff sniff

All 3 of my brugie babies (which yes, i still have been loving even though I haven't been on here) anywho, all 3 are being attacked!! by some sort of teeny tiny skinny yellowish 1/4" worm?caterpiller?creppy buggy? I've been just picking them off by hand and crushing them, ewww!

All my babies are doing so good, growth wise, new leaves, nice and vibrant green, but they are getting full of holes...errrr Any advice?? purty purty please ;o)

~melissa

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Melissa, You have been missed.. hope things are fine for you... Get out some peroxide, mix it 1part to 3 parts water and a few drops of plain dishsoap, NOT the anti bacterial kind. Shake it up in a spray bottle and go to town sprayin on your babies, on the underside and stem, too.. you can use it everyday, but NOT in direct sun.. wait till evening or in the morning early. Nice of you to stop in and see us! Sandy, our Clemen is a her, but I love the story about your Dad. I'm a sentimental one, too. Can't smell a geranium with thinking of Grandma Henry. I hope she knows I turned into a plant addict like she was. So, I come by it naturally, too. That little GD of yours is just precious!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I have seen in alot of magazines or articles where brugs are called datura and visa versa. I kept reading on the brug site about people having cats eating on the brugs and with all my wisdom I wrote in and said how can that happen I thought brugs were poisonous to cats.....they were talking about catapillars.....LOL I am sure several of the seasoned growers had a good laugh on that one. Least I am good for something....LOL

Faye, I am so happy for you and your husband.

No sunshine today and my solar batteries are running low.....LOL

I am outta here, talk to ya all when I get home later.

Santee, CA(Zone 9a)

Thank you AuntB!!! You's the bestest Auntie in the world ;o)

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I have a yellow NOID from Kim of Pa. and it is doing good except I've noticed some holes in several of the leaves. A careful examination I found 2 tiny green worms just eating away. I'll have to check the brug out every day. I also have another brug from another DG member and noticed the worms found that one too. Is there a spray I can use on them?

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

happgarden - I had a tomato hornworm eat my two purple dautra to the ground in one night - but then he was able to be seen bright green by a cardinal - who had him for lunch - my daturas grew leaves and are blooming again - 7th x this season - They were what convinced me to try brugs -

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Melissa and Sami.. so good to see ya'll came back home!!
FAYE... YAY.. and yes God IS Good!! I am soo happy and relieved for you both!
Sandy.. you have the cutest lil GD.. ohh to have one that small again.. BTW.. I thought Cleman was a man too.. yep.. I incerted foot in my mouth!!
Louise... glad you finally got over here..lol.. man what good buys you got!! I just LUV those thrift stores. I need to take a day and go to the "big city" and ask where some are.. I know they would have some I don't know about!! Usually we go for Dr appts.. and then back home..NOT for a fun day!
Joyce.. yeah I think I remember lurking on that thread.. BUT I was thinking the same thing..LOL
Donna TY for the virus alert!! I probably would have opened it, IF I hadn't known!
Bonnie.. NO those weren't from you..lol .. you didn't write on the ones you sent me!! You are being toooo nice..lol.. it WAS a mess.. course.. with all that stuff in here, you couldn't SEE my normal mess!!
Peg.. you did it..lol I am making chili too.. even though the A/C is running full blast.. I love it.. Never could figure why most people only reserve chile and soup for the cooler months.. I love both, but usually don't make them myself either until it get's cooler. This morning though it was kinda cool, for us here too.. so maybe it's "fitting" after all! I sooo enjoyed talking to you the other night.. can't wait to meet you!
My MG's finally started blooming this morning!! these are the ones EmmaGrace is trying to addict me to!! Gosh.. they are reall pretty.. and so paper thin delicate! I'll try to get pics tomorrow.. they are shriveling now

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Now I am really confused AuntB....I was told that Datura was Devil's Trumpet - they look up towards heaven from Hell.........And that Brugs were Angel's Trumpet, because they are looking from Heaven down towards Hell.......Man oh man it's too confusing for me, LOL!

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

So glad I'm not the only confused one on this thread..lol

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Faye sweetie I stay confused, LOL! You must be my long long sister, haha!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Karen..LOL you are correct.. and I KNOW Bonnie had to have said the same thing.. IF she is the one that said it..She is our "master" brug teacher.. she knows a lot, that us newbies don't.

(Phyllis) Osceola, PA(Zone 5b)

Hey talk about being confused...I got a devil's trumpet thinking it was a vine...LOL
Fell in love with the pictures of the flowers...
had it in a hanging pot....LOL
Found out here it was a annual form of brug..more bushier and smaller..Go figure so now it's in a pot keeping the brugs company..
Maybe I can get that to bloom...LOL

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Oh my, the whole gang has checked in today. It’s so nice to see everyone posting.
Karen, I have always heard it the same way as you but I think it’s just a saying. As long as you know that Dats point up and Burgs point down you can tell the difference.
Faye, so glad to hear you got good new. Don’t worry about being confused; it happens to all of us. Fire away if you have questions, someone will try their best to answer.
Becky so glad I’m not the only one whos mg’s are just starting out in September. By the way I think your mess looked pretty darn good.
Sandra that little one is so precious, they are just so adorable at that age and it is so funny how our grandchildren can never do anything wrong. My DGD is 3 ½ now and she understands things more now, she is very good this year about not touching the plants that I tell her will hurt her.
Peg, your cooking again and making me want good food. You didn’t tell us about your dinner out last night, was it worth all the fufu and war paint?
Kimbob, so sorry to see your pretty double pink on the ground, it was going to be so beautiful. I hope you’ll get more.
Louise, glad you found us, would not want you all alone talking to yourself.
Joyce, hope you didn’t find any damage tonight. Too funny this morning with the black cat and the jolly green giants. ho ho ho.
Clem, I’ve got my dats and Burg all together and all over the yard. So far some of my dats have had all the leaves chew off but the Burgs are okay. Just a normal amount of holes in the leaves
Cat thanks for asking the question on the cuttings, now I don’t have to.
Melissa and Samigal, Worms? Oh yuck, now I have something else I have to look for.
AuntB, what on earth would we do with out you, thanks so much for taking the time to answer all the questions. It’s got to be tough to be the resident expert, but we really do appreciate it.
Now I got a question, I got the over winter thing, I got the cutting thing, and I got the part about rooting the big pieces all winter in a bucket. What I don’t get is everyone saying to take a cutting and root it just in case the one you are over wintering does not make it. So you cut a piece and root it then put it in a pot, right? Okay, what do I do with it then, put it in the kitchen window, try and keep it alive and worry about that one all winter too? I’m lost here, help.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Hotties, want to talk but need to wacth the convection, will be back later, girls scout word!

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Hi Phyllis, must have crossed post with you tonight. Your dat should bloom for you but they need a lot of root room. They are another potting soil eater and need a large pot. Most of mine are in pots but they grow much bigger if you put them in the ground.

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

common names are always confusing. Many plants have the same common names. Dats have many names. It is going to be in the 40's here tonight. Had to bring in my ylang ylang plant.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes thanks Bonnie for answering all the questions I had on rooting and cutting, I forgot to thank you for your detailed answer. I am the non-rootin-gardener of all times.....never had success rooting, don't do seeds cause I'm like Becky, we are instant gratification girls, hahaha! The brugs I definately love enough to put the time and thought into rooting, although I am scared of it, or of failing. I do believe in my area people leave them in the ground overwinter and cut them off right above the "Y". Can the hard wood of the trunks that you've cut root or do you have to use thinner soft branches? Sorry to be so needy and confused.....Love me anyway? sniff.....

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Louise you have an Ylang Ylang, so jeaulos here , My mom had a huge tree back in Nicaragua and so gorgeous! Your 40 's temps, don't send them over here!

i have the dwarf ylang clemen. So far it has been a challenge but has two new leaves so I want to keep it warm!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Karen.. you can take cuttings before the Y or anywhere.. supposedly if you cut below a Y.. the cuttings will bloom quicker than below. I am learning the lingo.. it's just my brugs aren't listening to me!!..LOL.. I promise.. they are easy to root..
Donna.. we are talking.. taking cuttings of the plants we have planted in the ground.. kinda like "insurance" in case they don't come back next spring.
Clemie.. now WHY do you have to "watch" the convection?? huh?? hehehehehe
Phyllis.. I hear you.. maybe some day we can say.. I have a BUD!!
Bonnie.. another ????... Poor you.. us picking your brain... you said you are slowing down on fertilizing getting ready for winter.. wellll.. IF you have them in the basement, and some even bloom down there, why can't you continue to fertilize and have even bigger, better blooms?? I hope that isn't a dumb ? or one you have already answered!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Hello Hotties!! Great news Faye : ) Listen I prolly will be missing for a few days my puter has something really bad going on : ( I can't seem to stay on and when I do it's a mess! I have been trying to post for hours..sheesh. Wecome Sandra and what a cute Top Model!!
I see some missing Hottie are back! Waving hello to you both : ) TTYL

South Coast, RI(Zone 6b)

Thanks Becky, that make sense, I gotta get the terminology straight, I never think of leaving them in the ground as over wintering.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL Donna.. maybe that's a TX slang.. I don't know.. it's just what I always called it..

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Reading quick but back to the convention!

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

hahahaha lost, lost, lost, but still love this thread! Ylang Ylang?

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Night all, sweet dreams.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Clemen are you back to a convention or the convection? ROTF, It's late for me tonight....zzzzzzzzz....nite nite all, sweet dreams of Brugs!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I fertilize my plants in the winter but they get alot of light in my sunroom.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

okay, I can't sleep yet so one more question.....I don't want to fool with complicated mixtures of fertilizers....Someone told me to use 1 scoop of Miricle Gro with 1 scoop of epsom salts per gallon of water for brugs.....Is this allright? what is an easy fertilizer mix for them and how often do you fertilize during blooming and growing season, since I will be leaving mine in the ground?

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Karen I have several different miracle gro ferts and switch them off. Right now I am using rose food on my budding brug because it has a higher second number to promote flowering. If you really don't want to mess with too much fertilizer use a double dose of dynamite pelleted. I use it when I pot up. Then use your miracle gro.

Good Morning Hotties! TGIF, for sure, seems like a 6 day week and it was only 4! Lu is posting pics of her first bloom back over on 13, she's so excited, I know she's just tingling! Fun! Check it out! (will catch up, I got a first bloom, too last night!)

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Phyllis for getting me here from #13. I see now how this works. If you are watching a thread and don't go HOME first, you just don't know a new thread has been started. So some pics of my first bloom ever are on #13.

Down to 46 last night, so foggy today you couldn't see a thing! Don't know about damage today but no damage last night except for standing water. I am one of the few bruggies who doesn't put holes in the pots cause I don't want them leaking all over the place in the winter. So I went around last night tipping everything over brugs and ees so they could drain.

Karen, when I fertilize I use plain old miracle grow. Have to admit I am not good at fertilizing except in the winter when I am bored out of my mine....lots more time. But my brugs this summer have bloomed up a storm. I usually have active growing plants in the winter because the south side of my house is all glass for solar heat and my brugs bloomed last winter, up and until they got mites and I ripped all their leave off cause I couldn't stand it anymore....poor naked things.

Not that I have started alot of brugs, around 10 and I have always laid the sticks on their sides and squish them down in the moss about 1/2 way up on the log. This has worked well for me, I have even been able to start pure green sticks this way. I usually use spagnum moss, and I usually use the clear plastic pot bottoms. Then I can just lift it up and see if the logs have rooted. Once they have rooted the sticks lift out of the moss easily and I put them in a pot with potting soil and cover them up to the same point and let them keep growing. This way you don't have a stump with a branch. After everything has grown up I don't worry about covering up the stick that was laid there. Some are sticks are covered where the soil has moved around and some are still just partially covered. Anyway this has worked for me since I am not good at checking water levels.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

What a beautiful bloom. Is it loaded and how is the smell?

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

OH Hap,thank You. It is not loaded but the smell is lovely. I think there are 4 other buds that might bloom, but 2 are very small. I will post a pic of them soon.

I have go get dressed now and get to the store. I'll be back quickly, I hope☺....................

(Cathy), MO

Good morning everyone. Beautiful bloom Posy! So glad it finally opened for you!
