I've done that too!! :-) I've also bought the frozen Reames egg noodles, but they aren't quite the same. Good for those lazy days though, or times when you just don't have the time or energy to make the real thing
Best/ worse/ ? did you learn today #58 visit with friends...
Well it looks as though we all enjoy the comfort food...meal was delicious..Cathy, next time I'm going to try your recipe..like the idea of sugar in it...
Geraldine, girlfriend from Florida, if you remember she's my friend from this community who married Bert and he died at Christmas, she was in need of someone to talk to so we spend 1 hr. on the telephone..think she's a bit homesick...
once I had something to eat I was chilled so decided to lay down, imagine, lady of leisure so I've just gotten up from the couch and the next step is bed..trying to decided if I'll take a bath or not..might just wait till morning...
Guess if you do a lot of cooking Crissy a kitchen aid would be a wonderful kitchen item to have...yes they are quite expensive..wow...lol..rather spend the money on 'tools'...
I'd like to do the cooking a mixer requires, but since I don't have it I don't do it lol! I need to replace the ceiling fans first. This year has been so expensive because of things breaking that shouldn't break I don't want to buy anything I don't need.
The food sounds yummy! It must be a week for comfort food, I made beef stew this week too! The recipe called for bitter chocolate and Guinness, sounds yuck but it is really excellent. It ended up with too much broth though, next time I'm going to make the noodles you all were talking about in the thread. I love homemade noodles, but never made them much because they took a while to make and, being a working mom, I needed them done in 15 minutes or less...

Chocolate in beef stew???? That's something I never would've thought of! Can you post the recipe??
Beef and egg noodles is delicious too
Yep!! Something about the weather turning cooler that makes one want to cook "comfort foods".....like Soup.....
Before I woke up this morning, I had already decided, in my semi-awake state, to cook a pot of soup--Beef vegetable soup. And--so i did--after running around all morning looking for marrow bones for the soup. Went to 3 stores! In the long run--I got more than I needed--but used them all anyway. Someone's dog is going to have many, many bones to chew on! I have enough for 3 dogs--and will take them to work and pass them on.
Following a basic recipe for Beef Stock--I concocted, added stuff, multiplied amounts, added things that never were in the recipe to start with, went out and plucked fresh Rosemary and Parsley and Garlic Chives, etc....Cut up 2 Beef Chuck stakes I had bought and already frozen and sauteed them in marrow fat (from the bones) and seasoned them with Montreol Steak Seasoning and then added them tot he soup. In the end--I ended up with the most awesome Soup I have ever cooked. Honestly!!!!! Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious!!!!!!
Have lots to share--and I already have. Better write down exactly what i did--or I won't be able to repeat this "masterpiece"......
Gita
Yum! Pass some this way Gita! I think I'm going to make some egg flower soup.
Fall is coming since everyone is thinking of cooking and fattening foods. Man that pie looked good. I am not a soup person but in the real cold weather it seems good and healthy so I do make it, that sounded real good Gita.
Man this job is kicking my butt. I lost some weight without trying and even have eaten a little worse than usual. It is so hard. My friend lost like 140 lbs on Jenny Craig and they asked her to be one of their consultants since she lost weight and counsels people on some web site that she has to lose weight now. She was so heavy all of her life and had this really interesting story that made me cry when I read it. I have not seen her in a few years since they were friends with my x and I for many years and it was awkward for them after we split up.
She went from 350 lbs to a size 10. She had Kaiser cut off some of her hanging belly because she had so much skin and now she wants to help people to pay back those who helped her. I should really talk to her about being more disciplined since I could lose weight more easily if I was eating more strictly. My dd may start emailing her for help since the baby weight, which she did pretty good on.
I hope all of you are doing good.
Morning, going from gardening to kitchen cooking...fall must indeed be close by..actually I took my coffee to have on the deck this morning, can you believe I could see my breath so inside having it with you all...
I'm going to be sad to put all those beautiful outfits away but time to look for warmer clothes especially as everyone in the office enjoys the coolness and I freeze...do have my micro furnace though...
That beef stew founds wonderful..look forward to recipe as would like your soup Gita..those types of food are nice to freeze, however I don't have a chest freezer so am limited and can't see the need for one being on my own...
Crissy, salesman once told me that because we normally purchase all our appliances at once that when one goes they normally all do same or most of them and then you want to upgrade the one that is still working in order to match the newer style...crossing my fingers that the appliances I purchased 4 years ago still have much life in them..but my tools need replacing..lol...
Dawn sounds as though your job is quite taxing..but the weight loss, that's good isn't it? with all the changes in your life of late that must take up extra energy as well..so Glad that Greg is trying to be compasionate with having the house guests...how is the little one, growing by the minute I bet...good baby? colick ? Now that is a lot of weight your friend loss..wow size 10..I could only hope...I don't have a weight problem I have a height problem ...if I was 5'6" rather than 5' I look wonderful..might be easier to get stretched...
Well off to organize what I will take to work to entertain myself today, do my hair, find fall outfit and off I go..never know when I'll get the call that I'm driving on my own...Danielle is a week late to deliver so any minute Suzanne will get the call...
Talk later
LOL on the stretching Betty......my problem too..I am barely 5' 3".
Last evening I went with some girlfriends to see the movie Mama Mia..what fun it was..I had a grin the whole way through..and hummed along with the music.
It has been many years since three of us had been to a movie...but we decided we might enjoy doing it from time to time. I didn't fall for the popcorn though..are they kidding??
Incredilbe prices at the Concession stand..I di however order a lrge coffee..$2.25...
If I'd drank coffee during the movie, they would have to put the movie on pause several times. Sounds like you had a good girls night out, Starrs. I can't say what the last theater movie I saw. Been a long time.
Here's a link to the Guinness Beef Stew recipe http://community.livejournal.com/cooking/6181972.html
The only changes I made were that I seasoned AP flour with salt and pepper and coated the beef chunks with it, then browned the chunks. It made a lot of broth because it was in a slow cooker so I used a slurry of 1/2 cup flour and enough water to make a thin paste, then added it at the end.
Don't use Stout it will give you a tannic and bitter aftertaste.
I also used Ghiarardelli bittersweet chocolate; it was the only one that WalMart had.
Edited to say: I also put all the beer in at once, hence the water/flour slurry. Sometimes I don't read directions carefully enough!

Oh Starzz glad you posted about that movie. I want to see it--humm maybe this weekend.
Deborah, you can imagine my problem when I went to see the last Pirates movie. Thought I would pop--no way I was leaving until the bitter end for sure. Needed my "eye candy" LOL
Oh thanks for the link!! Sounds really good.
Yes it sounds delicious! Thanks
Good morning everyone. Back at work for me. Hope you all have a good day
Oops, sorry. didn't realize there were more recipes on the page, I made the first one, posted by deltamiss.
Just arrived at work, another major accident on Hwy.400 - was closed so we went out for breakfast in Barrie, went and purchased my saw blade and then headed in..it opened up before they said it would, originally they said 3hrs. so just arrived..not bad..nice to take 1 hr. off our day..lol..
Will go and check out ther recipe's...
Carol, DIL Melanie wanted me to go see it with her a few weeks ago but it would have been the late show so passed, must see where it's playing..yep, not cheap to buy of those concessions..pop corn and pop think it's $7.00...last theatre show is when I took the boys to see 'green fried worms' think it was called, ended up having to go twice..
I usually enjoy purchasing the video as they come out so quickly after the threatre and then you have them to enjoy...that reminds me, Suzanne bought me "Secret Garden" and I still haven't watched it..must do!
I think theater prices for popcorn and soda's are terrible. We don't go that often, but I usually sneak in my own treats. Don't tell anyone.
Well, I guess I need to get going, get a shower, and clean the house.
Ladies be good, and I will be back later.
Linda Kay
Good Monday morning to everyone. Gosh, I had to start reading on the 4th, so it took me some time to get through this thread.
Even though I am still smoking, I would like to congratulate Starrz on kicking the habit. My hat is off to you lady. Way to go!!!
Betty, as always you are busy, busy, busy. You do get a lot done in a day though.
Gita, thank you for all the info on the Hibiscus. My largest Hibiscus is a perennial, but does not make seeds. Before we left VA Beach on Friday we walked to another hotel that John had been admiring the flowers planted there. We were able to find some of the seeds from a red one there too. I finally opened your envelope with the Hibiscus seeds in it and saw that you sent me some other types of seeds too. Thank you so much.
Here is hoping that everyone has a good week coming up.
Ruby
Hope you were able Ruby to get some sightseeing in...know you weren't feeling the best...were you able to take photo's of the area? Would enjoy as would the others seeing a bit of the area...you must be terribly tired...can see you going through the flower gardens, trying to look inconspicuous, picking seeds, know I tried that one at Home Depot, didn't work, those I took had NO seeds...
Must try to figure out in my garden what will grow from collected seeds and what will not..I just pick everything, throw it in a box and in the spring sprinkle here and sprinkle there...now that's gardening...lol
You are such a cutie, Miss Betty. I have been known to sow seed that way too.
We did take some pictures on the trip. Or at least, John took some pictures after I told him what I wanted them of. ha-ha I haven't downloaded yet, but will try to do that tomorrow and I will post some of the pics.
We have another week away planned for mid-October. I am determined to have a better time on that one.
Signing off and off to start a stew.
Ruby
Some of your seeds may benefit from a fall sowing. The freeze and thaw are needed for most reseeders I think. I'm sowing poppies early because of that.
That is true, the fans were installed when the house was built, just 1 1/2 year ago. They shouldn't go out that fast, but since one went and they are all identical all 4 of them will go! I'm hoping the dishwasher quits, it's as cheap as the fans are lol!
better Crissy let the dishwasher work till after Christmas...try and break the purchases up so when they are in need of replacement it won't happen all at once...
Well the day went rather quickly, brought baby wool in and have been doing crochet pattern..imagine, Paul came in and asked me for a file...go figure??? lol...told me to wait though till I finished my counting sequence..guess men know more than we think...so I'll continue working on it this week, who knows perhaps by Friday it will be finished..hopefully before the baby (or not!)
Carol, 3 1/2 more days...I'm just so excited..Wayne here told me if I take the 401 East and it being early Friday aft. that it should not take me much longer than 1 hr....yipppeee.....
GEEEEEZZZZ!!!!
Every Post here is on a totally different topic!!! How is one expected to keep up with the conversation flow????????
Impossible!!!!!!
Well Gita, just jump in with your own topic...that's what we do, give one food for thought in following..
Guess what Gita, stopped for gas just about 1/2 hr. from the house, hungry, paid for the gas and asked the clerk, 'do you have licorice (my all time favorite)?" she pointed to the lower shelf and boy there were all kinds..looked from box to box ...hmmm do you want to know Gita which one I chose...I said to her 'don't need it-better pass'...so there...
mmm, I love licorice, the sweet unsalty kind! Good N Plenty is my favorite movie treat!
Knowing my luck Betty, that stupid dishwasher will outlive me just because I don't like it.
I like red licorice, and that's only once in a while. I'm a popcorn kinda gal!
Morning, rained heavily last night, hated to get up even though I went to bed early..almost ready for my day..keep waiting for the call to say Suzanne's daughter Danielle in in labor and so I must venture to the city on my own...Suzanne laughs, she keeps saying she'll not have a day during the week off for it, the child will wait till the weekend....
Garbage day here today so better get it beside the roadside...
Just dropping by to hope that everyone will have a good day. Take care.
Ruby
Love good and plenty! That's my favorite!
Good for you Betty! Are you feeling a bit better?
Starzz you're doing it so proud of you. We would do most anything for new plants!Gita you always have something interesting to so! Go for it!. Have to get going. Have some shopping to do. The greenhouse has some plants on sale and I saw some ferns and hostas!
Morning all,
Thanks to all for your support on my not smoking..I feel so much better..mor energy for sure. When I get the urge for a cigarette..I just take a deep breath and let it out slowly..it is working.
Rain here too..very dull and the furnace came on
Vicki..let us know what kind of Hostas you bought.
Yesterday I rented the movie The Bucket List. starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.
Enjoyed it very much ..but it was different than I thought it would be....
i love jolly ranchers.....
cant get em out here but did get sent a bag of them once, apple flavour is my favorite!
hugs to all
Oh yea, apple jolly ranchers are good!
Just got in, another accident on Hwy 400 and it was closed..how very sad, from what we've heard it was a poor lady who broke down, went on the curb, got out I guess to check things out and a transport hit her...then a little further downt he road was yet another collision..tell you, it is taking our lives in our hands each day...
Before I left this morning I went into the garden and picked a bouquet of flowers..frost will get them shortly so I may as well enjoy them during the day...
Oh happy days..after work yesterday I went to the post office and there were 2 advisory cards saying I had parcels..now I'm in many 'swaps' so it could be any one of them...now with going to Carol's Friday that means I'd have to wait till Sat. to get the parcels and I'm not that patient..too excited to see what I get so went over to Cliff and Bernice's and Cliff said he'd pick them up for me today...saw I was so excited that asked if I wanted him to opent hem up and call me at work..lol..so cute! NOT!! I will open them though at their house tonight..usually it's the postal service girls that are saying 'hurry up and open them'..so Sat. I'll have to drop in and show them...
Although it rained all night, heavily I must add the sky here in Toronto is blue..calling for sunshine the next 2 days .. but temps are on the cooler side..
What are Jolly Ranchers???? is that licorice?
Jolly Ranchers are a very delicous hard candy in many flavors. Cherry, apple, strawberry, grape...
Little oblong shapes, and so good.
Linda Kay
Have to check out if we have such things...sound 'yummy' .. well brought in the crochet afghan I'm working on for the new baby, something simple I can do without counting..
Suzanne just walked in, her daughter was just at the Dr's and they can't reach the uterus even though the baby is ready for birth, so they are going to take it (don't know how to spell cycerian???) first thing tomorrow morning...
I'll drive in but Suzanne will go to the hospital..prayers please!

Oh baby coming tomorrow morning!! Thoughts and Prayers for baby and mom!
That's funny, this morning at work we all sat and had our 30 minute morning chat that we always have, never about anything special, just whatever we start talking about, and the subject this morning was the movie the Bucket List! I haven't seen it, but I've heard it's different but very good at the same time. I love Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson!
Linda Kay, do you remember the barrel looking hard candy? It may have been pre-Jolly Ranger days. I liked the rootbeer flavor.
