I just take two stolons and plant them in a vase or jar. In the beginning I put saran wrap on the top until they get rooted. Then I just leave them around the edges of the light stand. They don't need as much light as some plants to be happy and bloom. I do feed them my 12-36-14 av fertilizer though.
August Blooms Part 2
Gail later today I will try to get photo's of some of my episcia's as I have some that are still growing slow and now I see your pictures maybe I have them in to big of a bowl so I may have to put more rocks in the bottom and bring the soil and plant up.... Have to do a litte running but then will take pictures....One of them is going crazy in the bowl.. She is like a Giant...LOL

I feed mine VF-11 plant stuff
This is the first time I've ever seen Episcias at Wal-Mart so I couldn't resist buying them, even without names!
Gail: Your Episcias are gorgeous, which doesn't surprise me as everything you grow is really gorgeous! You just have that special touch! And, I know you also take proper care of your plants. I really need to get better about feeding mine!
I've decided not to get back into AV's that seem to require particular light conditions and care. They just seem to need more time than I have to give. So, if I see an AV (or Strep) that I really love, I will buy it but even if it doesn't survive more than a few months, that's okay ... I will enjoy it while it's alive! LOL.
My stands with lights are just cheapie Wal-Mart things that don't have the chains to raise and lower for adjustment, so when I have little tiny plants, I have to raise them up closer to the lights by sitting them on top of an upside down box or something and a lot of times I bump the stand and the little ones go flying! Arrrgh!
The Episcias seem to do well with less direct light, mine are in the windows during the day and I sit them on the stands at night when I close the blinds. They don't seem to need the amount of light as AV's and others do.
I need to search and try to find some 6" hanging baskets for Episcia's and other small plants. I remember seeing them on a website a year or so ago and need to order some. Our local garden centers seem to only have very large 16" size plastic baskets when they have them at all.
Aaah ... so many Episcias ... so little time: http://images.google.com/images?ndsp=18&um=1&hl=en&q=images+of+episcia&start=0&sa=N
Beautiful episcias Gail and Brenda..you all make growing them look so easy..I know better..lol..at least when it comes to me trying to grow them...
Thanks for those pictures Sally, very nice Suomi! I have several of those type of glass pots that I could try some stolons in!
~Brenda
Sally, which picture is Suomi because I don't see one. (but remember I don't always recognize the right names)
I forgot to post yesterday that I'd started an August Blooms 3 thread. Here's the link. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/897320/ Sorry about that!
Gail, I'll go look at those Episcias again and see if I recognize them. I can't grow them, and really don't know much about them. They are hard for me to identify.
I have one of those also Suomi, mine is not blooming.. I think it is suppose to be yellow... Ok sorry so short I am off to mow the back 40 :-)
Hugs,
Susan
