August Blooms Part 2

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Seedpicker, go to Lyndon Lyons Greenhouses and he carries this standard trailer. I had to wait over a year to get her she is in such demand, but I will be happy to send you leaves or just turn in your order to him and maybe he will have one.
She is called Champagne Pink. The only reason it is so hard to grow one from leaf is that each leaf has so much pink and white in it that there is not much chlorophyll in each leaf.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Gail-
well, you are extremely sweet to offer, but I don't know if I could get a leaf to grow, for the reasons you mentioned.

I know that I have one variegated one, and is does about 50% as well(because it has 50% less ability to process chlorophyll), and I'm afraid that a plant with 2/3 less ability than normal green, would leave me with a struggler...

Which brings me to many accolades to you! You've obviously done a great job with that one! Yours is gorgeous and made me want one, immediately :0)

I went to that site:
http://www.lyndonlyon.com/AV%20List%20Trailers%20NF.html
and their picture of it, was not impressive. I skipped right over it!

That Pixie run around sure caught my attention, though :0)

If anyone posted a picture that looked like yours, they could ask twice as much and sell four times as many. I guess if they sell out like you say, they don't really WANT a great picture because they have a hard enough time keeping it in stock, with the picture they have...

If you ever get an actual plant of it going, I'd be willing to buy one from you, but just can't see starting with a leaf of one so difficult, and that site doesn't seem to be selling anything but leaves...

Once, again...great job! It is gorgeous!

I haven't attempted any leaves so far............just been busy..........

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Just saw the news- Hope Lin is doing OK??!! Anyone heard from her?

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Don't post much on this forum, but peek in often. Just wanted to show you all a pretty little semiminiature that I am so pleased with. It's the first time it has bloomed for me after ordering from Bluebird Greenhouse last March. It was so tiny when it arrived, but after transplanting, it grew strong and healthy. Love the color.

Cool Blue (H. Pittman) Semi double light ble, medium green, plain semiminiature.

Those blooms look so glittery

LOVE that container!

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Thank you seedpicker. Cool Blue seems to like it too. I think I got that one from Thickety Run Originals on ebay. I have all my violets in self-watering pots. I have good luck with them.

I find photos taken outside in the sunshine will show that sparkle. :D

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

My sister just called, and she says I have a box waiting for me from TN when I get home! WooHoo! ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

hello ladies and I do love that cool blue. I stuck a leaf of Cool Blue and now I want to find her after seeing your pretty blooms.

Syru!! You are so funny.........come back and tell us what is here from Tennessee......I bet I know..........could it be RainGazer!!!!!!!!!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail - you're psychic! It WAS from RainGazer!

I now have:

AV - Indian Trail (?)
Sinningia pusilla
Sinningia eumorpha
Kohleria rhizomes
Kohleria 'Queen Victoria' cutting
Strep leaf - Bristol's Potpourri
Strep leaf - Blue Mars
Aeschynanthus 'Rasta'
Aeschynanthus . . . Amy & Gail call it 'reverse rasta'
Aeschynanthus 'Black Pagoda' cutting

and . . .

Jewel Orchid - Ludisia discolor

I definitely got the better end of this trade, I think!

When you said Tenn. I knew it had to be Rain. She is the best trader in the world. I don't even know how she finds that many good 'things' to send.

You will have to keep us posted on their growing.

Happy weekend,
gail

I am new to this thread - and interested in growing african violets. I know nothing about them so what should I know to get started? I live in Portland Oregon - do they do well here?

South, TX

Welcome Portland! You can grow violets VERY well under lights. Also, if you have bright natural light that is not too hot and direct, you can grow them in a window or sunroom.

A good, light mix of "soil" is what they need also.

With the right light, soil, watering and fertilizer you can do it! This is a great place to learn and share photos!

Thank you for the encouragement - I am going to look for a few tomorrow. I do have some areas near windows that have bright indirect light - and we don't get a lot of "too hot" light here! I love the green flowered one in the photo that Syrumani posted - absolutely beautiful.

South, TX

That is true, your sun is not as HOT as here in S. Texas I bet!

I love african violets as well as many plants. I garden outside also, do you?

It is so nice to learn something new. You will have FUN!

Here are my two stands of violets. I have a sunroom also, but it is hot out there right now. Violets don't like to be hot.

I can't believe how many you have. They are beautiful! I do garden outside but i ma very new to it. This is my first garden in Oregon. I moved here 7 months ago and am in the process of renovating an old 1905 house. I can't move in until the end of September but the first thing I did when the house became mine was plant tomatoes, squash, peppers and cucumbers. The tomatoes are hugh and really full of tomatoes - the contractors tell me it is because of the daily dusting of sawdust! I go over there every day to play in the garden - there is so much I want to do. I have taken out a small lawn in the back yard and replacing it with flagstones that I will plant between with ground cover. So far it is looking good but my back is aching.....too old for this stuff. I think I will get some of those shelves with lights so I can start seeds for next spring's vegetables. I have never done that. I just retired and I'm excited about having time to play!

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

I have no blooms to show right now, but I love looking at all the beautiful blooms you all have. I have a question! I have a lovely Sinn. Touch of Spice that I received in a trade. (CRS is rampant and I can't remember who sent her to me.) A couple of weeks ago while I was watering, I knocked her off the shelf and made a big mess. While I was cleaning up the mess, I stuck the two broken leaves into a vase in which I was rooting some coleus. I took the coleus out to plant them today and found that the leaves had grown tubers on the bottom of the stems. The tuber are about 1/2 inch round. Should I plant the tubers or let them get bigger? When I plant them, should they be beneath the soil or right at soil level? Or will they even turn into plants???? Any help will be appreciated. Lurker Lou

(Judi)Portland, OR

Jannich - the place in Portland is very close to me, just a few miles so I will surely go there! Thank you so much! The timing is great since the outdoor gardening will be slowing down. I am excited!

I too am curious about the planting of Sinningia tubers. I googled and found this info regarding Sinn Cardinalis but it just says plant the "bulb" more or less at the surface: http://www.plantcare.com/encyclopedia/cardinal-flower-182.aspx So, I'm assuming you would just barely cover it with a little soil?

Found this with some good photo's: http://home.earthlink.net/~sinnvenner/3tubers.htm

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Lin,
Glad all is well with you... Have not been on for a few... but glad to see you.. ^_^ I only have two Sinningia's and today I potted them up and I did not see a tuber or a bulb... Now the kohleria had tons of worms in them...LOLOL
Once again Glad to see you Lin,
Hugs,
Susan

Glad you retired and can have more time now, Portland. I am a stay at home mom for my little parrot and doggie.

Your new, old home sounds really neat!!! You can't beat home grown tomatoes!

Glad you are here, you will enjoy it. There are so many wonderful photos to see.

I love variegated av's a lot, this is a little one, with "girl" leaves.

Lou...How exciting for you! Tubers!! I usually just push them down into my mix about 1/4 inch or so,cover them up and moisten the soil and stick them in a bright, warm spot, you should see new growth as early as a couple weeks..Good Luck..keep us posted on your new babies : )

Yes the Rhizomes turn into new plants I just found out lastnight and I was very happy to hear that... Port, you will get use to my way with words... I don't always type what my brain is telling my hands and I am a awful speller so I use short cuts and instead of saying Rhizomes as I really did not know what they were called I called them my worms...LOL Sorry for the mistake ^_^
Huggers,
Susan
