August Blooms Part 2

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I know this is on the wrong thread but had to show you Hoya Imperialis in bloom after a heavy rain that knocked all her other blooms off.

I guess when I planted up hoyas I just put different kind in each basket........

Look closely and you can see how many flowers are coming off of all the peduncles on the hoyas.

Someone tell me if it is my computer or DG that is slow. It took me 15 minutes to upload a few pictures. I need to know before I pay a computer tech.......thanks

Very pretty photos, Gail.

Irish is all clean up, Syrumani!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I wonder if I should hang my hoya on the front porch, or something . . . it hasn't done much of anything since I got it a month or two (maybe three?) ago!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Nichole, hoyas really like a lot of filtered sun.......some even take full sun. They also like very high humidity along with filtered sun. Don't forget to use your av food from Ken. That is what I feed my hoyas.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Syru..Your irish flirt really does look different without all its blooms..beautiful plant even when not blooming tho and you have the foliage looking perfect..soon it will have even more blooms for you : )
Gail..Gail..Gail..You certainly are a pro at growing those sinningias..Love them all!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Good morning!

Portland1,Glad I could be some help. There will be lots of named AV's at that sale and other plants related to the AV's.Which are pretty easy to grow.If I lived closer I would be there with you.LOL.Gail is right I forgot all about the stickys at the top of the AV forum.Theres great info there about growing AV's .

Susan,Lovely plants girl,That yellow strep is awesome.I wonder when the vendors here in the states will start selling them.I want,I want,I want.IMAO..... Star of bethlehem is a cutie too.My vote for your new name is SuzQsteps

Sally,You grow the most amazing AV's,beautiful!

Nancy,.Beautiful strep for the silly name she has. That smelly cat I could handle. No fur to trigger the allergies.LOL

Gail,Oh my goodness,There all beautiful.I can't get over how Texas Zebra has grown.Shes looking great.Hope your feeling better.

Thanks ladies for starting my day off with all your beauitful pictures!

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Gail- Those sinn.s are beautiful!!!! Your hoya pictures remind me to be patient, as I have 1 hoya that I bought from Wally world 3 yrs ago and has yet to bloom. Hope never dies in a real gardener's heart.( I have a stepping stone with that sentiment on it.) great growing! Hope you are doing better each day. Lou

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Get it out in that sun while you can, Lou. Feed it regularly about once a month and don't forget to add 1/2 cup epsom salt poured on the hanging basket twice a year. I do believe that we do that because the magnesium gets tied up in the soil.

Yes, Jan.........can you believe Texas Zebra! You sent her to me as a baby and she loves her new home and won't stop growing bigger.

Nichole, you are really getting good in a hurry at these AVs.........I am simply amazed that you started out with tiny babies and have even had blooms. Wish I could grow them like the rest of you do. AVs don't like me.

Susan, I will have to take a picture of the plumerias you sent me last summer. They are blooming their heads off in the prettiest pinks! Thanks

Would love to tell you that the shingles have left me............this is a very extended form of shingles...........we don't know when the 'hurting' will stop. Sure glad for pain pills.

Have a great day!

Here's one for you, Gail . . . I got a box from VA today . . .

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Let's see..........let me think..........it must be Susan51 ...........she is the only friend I can think of off the top of my head from VA. But I do know there are more people on here from Virginia.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is a gorgeous plumeria Susan sent me last year. It even survived a hard fall I took from the porch and knocked off half of its' leaves about a month ago.

Here are the other two which are getting ready to bloom. They, too, got the brunt of my fall and knocked off half their leaves with my big fat body. They seemed not to have cared and are going to bloom anyway.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Oh Gail I am so proud they are doing so well for you.. I have about 5 or so bloom for me this year... I had two split very big branches off because of a storm we got one day.. So those are going to new homes...LOL They will have to be rooted... Gail did you root yours from me? or were they rooted? Good job either way...
Hugs,
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No, they weren't rooted, but they root real easily here. I just left them out for about a week to dry up and then stuck them in the very pots they are in and off they went. Then, when winter came, I put them on the front porch with poly wrapped around the screened in porch.........so when spring came, out they went in the hot sun.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail - you're 2 - 0!!!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok that helps thanks... Two others are getting them also so two weeks until I ship...
Hugs,
Susan

I went to my local nursery today to purchase my first african violet and they had on;y one, which was very sickly looking so I came away with a new hose instead. however, they are getting a new shipment next week so I will have to wait until then! I can tell I am going to get hooked.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Sending you a dmail, Portland1 . . . ^_^

Does anyone recognize this Episcia? I was at our local Wal-Mart a few days ago and they had a few Episcia's with the outdoor plants in the sun! The nursery tags just said Shade/ Assorted Landscape Plants. I couldn't resist since they were in such good shape and had a few buds. The little 4" pots were $3.97. I planted two in this container and sat it on the plant stand under the lights. I found some of the buds opened this morning!

Here's another that has one bud that opened. I haven't re-potted it yet but am thinking of planting it in this tall vase to let it cascade over the sides.

Lin..those are gorgeous!..and from Walmart no less..lol..our Walmart never carries anything like that..Look at all the pretty blooms!Wish I knew what the names were..I'm sure someone will know tho... oo that 2nd one will look absolutely wonderful planted in that vase..I can just picture it..great buys you found!

(Judi)Portland, OR

I am new to these plants - when you plant in in a container like that how do you accommodate drainage?

(Zone 1)

Thanks Nancy! Our Wal-Marts vary rarely ever carry Episcia's or any other Gessies. I find a few AV's once in awhile but usually they are already half dead from sitting in the sun and too much water by the time I see them! I guess some folks do grow the Episcia's
in the ground but I know they wouldn't survive the winter in my area ... down in the southern part of the state maybe, but not here.

Portland1: I put a couple of inches of gravel in the bottom of any closed container that I plant in for excess water to drain into. And, I have to be very careful when watering .... just a little bit at a time, only enough to moisten the soil.

Here's a pic of how I planted that first one in a bowl:

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Dish Gardens can work very well growing AV's just as long as Plantladylin mentioned, you water very sparingly and have plently of gravel in the bottom of your dish or pot. Here is one I grew using Lil Thornbird as the feature plant. (L. Ray) Bright red. Miniature

(Zone 1)

Love that dish garden Don! Very nice!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Nice dish gardens - so that's the secret!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I don't have any pix today . . . maybe in a few more days.

I did, however, buy some AV's. In the LSAVC newsletter (thanks, Gail!), there was an ad for Steven's Plant Shop - located in San Antonio of all places! I gave him a call the other day and this morning . . . he usually does mail order, but I was able to go for a visit. I walked away for myself with a Rob's Argoyle Socks, a Vintage Wine, and a Milkyway Trail cutting. I also got a suprise for someone in VA . . .

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Now Nic I wonder who that could be???? LOLOL You did not have to do that... but what is it.????? come on tell me now..LOLOLOL
Hugs,
Susan

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Nice try Susan..LOL : )).....Lin the way you grow your Episcias in containers with gravel on the bottom is really neat..maybe I will one that way and see if it lives any longer for me.. couldn't hurt : )
Don,your dish garden is beautiful!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, those episcias are fantastic! Gee, I wish we could find them anywhere down here in retail stores. Great buy. I did find some in the fall in Seguin but have never seen any since then.
I am wondering if the second picture with the pink flower could be Moss Agate????????

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow Lin and Don what great pictures... I saw Gail post a picture once of her episcia's in a fish bowl and then I did it and love them now in there and so do they...LOL
Now behave Nancy... Does not hurt to ask...LOL
Hugs,
Susan

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Very nice plants you have there, Lin. You have blooms too! I found them at a Walmart by me a few weeks ago. I bought three of them. They were very spindly from lack of light. I have them hanging where they get morning sun. One has bloomed with little pink flowers. The other two are just putting out stolens. I posted the pictures here a while ago. I have to take pictures again of the one that's blooming.
Every once in a while you find a gem at Wallyworld. ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just took pictures tonight of some episcias you saw Susan...........to send to Amy . She is trying to help me identify all of them. There are just a couple of them I don't know. I started out with 2 stolons to a jar (just what Lin did by putting two plants together).

Now they are getting big............

PS...If anyone knows the name of this one, please tell me

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

this is another jar of the same one I just posted and don't know the name of

I don't know which name this one is either............she is just starting to take off.

Isn't this Pink Panther cute. She is just now getting big enough to do something with her (hope I didn't wait too long to put her in a vase or jar) RainGazer gave her to me in a trade.

another episcia Rain sent called cupreata......love her colors.....

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh Lin- Lucky you to have Episcias at Wal-Mart! I usually love the variegated foliage but I think the second one with green leaves and pretty pink bloom is my fave of the two. Love the antique looking vase too! Really my taste.

Gail- great Episcias as well! Are they planted directly into those ivy jars? I need to try that. I'm through with them in my aquarium/terrarium. I never remembered to turn on the light or water them. I have 1 measly plant left. ggrr... From now on I'm doing what I think is best for me and that's repotting them up bigger as soon as I get them and putting them on my shelf with very filtered east window. See if that works for me and quit making it rocket science! LOL Sometimes I think I over analyze things and get all scared then worry myself into doing nothing or the wrong thing. Am I the only one that is that nutty?
