You all sound so busy and your photos are so beautiful My garden is a small city yard and I envy all your space!
It is raining here and it feels really good after the hot weather. I am one of the few who love the rain and winter. What do all of you do in the winter when you can't garden?

Glenview, IL

omg...Hi from ya

Portland---

In Winter--I welcome the longer dark evenings so I am NOT compelled to go out and garden all the time....everything is asleep.....
I use the dark times (??) to do other indoor things. Maybe work on more craft projects?
Watch more TV--for sure! Better programs on anyway--this time of year.

I am more compelled to crochet and knit....not that I do much of it anyway...but the warmth of "wool" and knitting DOES enter my mind more. Never feel like doing it in the warmer times.....YUK!
I drink less cold beers......Love to live in sweats....Love wearing turtlenecks.......Love to snuggle under my blankets and comforters in my bed for the night.....all warm!

HATE shoveling snow and having to sweep off my car in the wee hours of the morning so I can go to work....Totally resent the lack of daytime hours and get to hate the early darkness......A feeling of "aloneness" often surfaces......would like someone to cuddle with.

You have asked a "DEEP" question, Portland.......

Betty..the shed is wonderful..you will have people coming to look at it and be the talk of the town. Well done..
Just wait till there are blooms in the boxes..WOW! I'm envisioning red geraniums..and some ivy

Judy..what's up?
Is something wrong?

Portland..you love rain and winter..great!..actually I know a few people who say they like winter..I like it when I is bright and sunny with snow on the ground..but the roads have been plowed..do you ski or do any winter sports?

Gita...your post is intriguing..and got me to thinking about what I love about winter...I know that I love being safe and warm inside when there is a storm brewing..candles burning in the evening..cuddled up on the couch watching a good movie.

Had a good evening with my friends who came for dinner..we had a walk around the garden and looked at all the things that are blooming and about to bloom. Does anyone grow perennial Plumbago..it is starting to bloom..interesting little plant..and the leaves turn part burgundy in the fall. this is a pic from last year.

Crissy..have a great holiday..I'll be floowing along on your journey.

So girls..this is the first day of no cigs for me....again...Had my last one before bed last night..
I have been struggling with smoking on and off for years..I quit at least once a year..but can't seem to make it stick..
I use the nicotine patch..wish me luck..need to do this so I can lower my BP and Cholesterol..I stopped taking Lipitor and a new BP pill last week..as they both had side effect of muscle pain..although rare..but I ahd bad pain in my muscles in my back..and no real reason for it.

So today..low fat diet..and no smoking..must clear out those arteries!!!
Now..what was that you were syaing Betty..about old gals talking baout their health when they get together..LOL
Yep!!!!!!!!
I'm hoping that very soon I can say" I feel Fantastic!"

Gita..I think about you and all the walking and 'on the go' things you did on your vacation in Latvia..and wonder how you did it..I am 64..and wouldn't be able to keep up with you.

Cheers,
Everyone..have great day..

Morning, interesting reading to start my day,I'll not start to answer just this moment because Suzanne wanted to leave early and I know I'll get a few words written and she'll call...I'll have allll day to play..

Odd thing happened yesterday evening, Clara from the variety store came over for a walk, she loves walking through the gardens and as we went back in to the variety store, just needed an ice cream lol..her hubby was there talking with an awfully pretty lady, maybe just a bit younger than I, lives on the bay..anyway Clara was telling her husband about she shed and this lady (Liz) went on to say how she thought I was very creative and could do so many things ????? Now how would she know this ????? trying to be nice ?? then she said to me that she had been in some of my classes years ago at the farm and at the community center and that it opened up an avenue for her to paint, which she still does from time to time, had wondered where I had moved to...I truly didn't recognize her although as she spoke and then started to walk (had a gait) and her telling me who she came with it jogged a memory...so once fall comes on, she'll start painting with me again...

After the high humidity the past 3 days it has now turned cold..one extreme to the other..back to a sweater this morning...

Looking around to see what I could bring to work, almost everyone out to meeting today so I need something..could trace sign size and figure out something for the shed sign get it traced so I can paint lettering this week..

Will be a short week for me this week..work Mon./Tue. - hospital on Wedn. am - B.B.Q. here in the afternoon, Thursday back to the city with 4 boys to the Canadian National Exhibition and supper at Medieval Times, work 4 hrs. on Friday - who knows, maybe we can con Paul into letting me direct phones to the house, this is our long weekend, do you also have one this weekend?

I'm sure going to enjoy the week....

What do you lovely ladies have planned this week? please share...

Talk when I get to the office...I'll spend my trip time meditating on what I love about winter/what I dislike about same....

Betty and all hope your day will be a lovely one!

I've been working on a project for the past month involving long lists of numbers. I create the lists in Excel and then cut and paste into WordPad. THEN, I have to make sure there is only 1 space between each column, once that's done I cut and paste again into my work software. It then all gets transmitted to US Customs. The problem is that every time I complete this list of 1442 lines, 7 columns, the system rejects it for various things and then it's back to the old drawing board.

It would have been much easier had the person that told the customer we could do this actually had an idea of what the requirements were. I had to pry a lot of extra info from the customer and kept getting the usual "well no one told me this was necessary".

But, I only have to work on it for a few hours and then I can go out and play!
I have some pears that were given to me by a neighbor and I saw a recipe for pear "honey" that sounds delicious so I might just get out the food grinder and see if I like it enough to put up some jars of it. I also need to till my raised beds so I can put in my fall crops such as rutabagas, broccoli, carrots, Brussels Sprouts, chard, spinach and kohlrabi. I've got some of them already started in trays. The beds are so weedy because it was too hot this month to get out there and do any weeding for any length of time. Sure do wish my flowers grew as fast as these weeds, LOL!

It's cool here right now but with a promise of some humidity to come, maybe we'll get rain - that will be nice!

You all have a great day now and take care!
Terri

starzz,

Good for YOU! Quitting smoking is extremely hard......You just have to get over "the hump"....that is about 1 week....
I used to smoke too--quit for good in 1972. Have not had ONE ciggie since--and don't want any! That was my 14th attempt to quit over many years. It was precipitated by my husband (he smoked too) coming home from the Hospital after a 2 week stay as a result of a bout with double pneumonia. He almost died! He was never going to smoke again--and I was home weaning myself off of them awaiting his return home....

EVERYONE smoked then!!!! Even in the movies....Sinatra, Bogart, even actresses....
Stay with it! Take each urge to smoke as it comes and think about something else....
In a short time--you will hate the smell of an ash-tray! The coughing will stop and you will smell things you could never smell before.....foods...aromas....flowers....soap...

The hardest thing I found was the "hand and mouth" connection. What to do with my hands NOW???? For the mouth--you can chew gum, chew on toothpicks, a drinking straw...and such.
The other hard thing was the places and times one would associate with having a cigarette--like after a meal--with your morning coffee--when out having a drink--at a party---
etc....But--nowadays, no one smokes indoors anywhere public any more--which should be easier on those trying to quit.

You are 64--I am 71--a VERY young and active 71-yr. old.....
You say you would never be able to keep up with me---probably not, but this might be because you are a smoker....It does "wind" you quicker...

My "difficulty" is my knees, but even they got better as all the long walking continued (in Latvia). I have had both my knees replaced (2004 and 2007) and I recovered from both those surgeries all alone at home with steps everywhere. I just thought of all this as additional therapy....I DO have a strong mind-set that I CAN do this---all on my own--and I did! No one came and cooked for me---did my laundry, or anything. My daughter would stop by to see if i was OK. Laid on the couch a lot--did 100's of crossword Puzzles while icing my knee. Did my PT exercises twice a day for what seemed like "forever"...etc..etc...

Good luck----I wish you much success! Look at each day as "The first day of the rest of your Life!"...A healthier Life......
Put all thee $$$ you would have spent on Cigarettes in a jar--and take a trip once a year somewhere with the hundreds of dollars you will have saved. Reward yourself....

I know you CAN do it!!!! Hugs, Gita

Waited till 7:30 and dah, it came to me, Suzanne did have early appt. and I had to drive myself in..imagine that..so had to scurry, got here at 5 after 9, Paul and Wayne had already left, he transferred calls to his cel until I'd get in, I took transfer off, so I thought, nope, he called to say he still was getting calls...had to locate Suzanne's cel # as her appt. called, had to cancel..lol...and a client who cancelled about 6 appts. was given one last chance and didn't he just call to cancel sooo my day has been a bit scrambled..never fails, but on the good side, got my sign sketch..says

"Gardening Angels From Up Above
Please Watch Over This Garden With Love"

Thought I'd move us into another garden

Hello to Everyone -

Betty, I love your shed windows. So cute. To the two Dragonflies, thank you and yep Betty too for the pictures that you shared. Loved seeing everyone's yardens.

Last year before I knew Terri, I saw her post somewhere about having just moved in to a new house and not having any planting done at the time. I fill up a box of plants that we had an overabundace of a shipped off to her. In return she sent me some wonderful Jade Plants and a very, very small piece of String of Pearls. The String of Pearls didn't do anything much for a really long time. I had it planted with some other cacti and it evidently wasn't getting what it needed to grow. About a month or so ago I potted in in it's own pot. That stuff has grown by leaps and bounds. Yippie!! I love it.

To the other Dragonfly, Bev, I just recieved the Garden Marking Pens. They write very nicely. I do hope that they live up to their claim of not washing off. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Bev.

Starzz, I have just begun a high cholesterol medication last week. I read that one of the side effects is muscle soreness too. So far, so good with me. I am having little twinges here and there but that is normal for me, so I can't tell if it is going to a problem for me or not.

As for the smoking.......I am a very heavy smoker. I have had fights with my plastic surgeons for the last couple of years because they are saying that smoking leaves us harder to heal than most. Oh well. As of this day, I am not going to try and quit. I wish you all the good luck in the world with stopping the cigs. Many, many others have done it, so hopefully you will be one of the ones who can get off of them successfully.

Judy, I didn't quite understand your posts from yesterday either. Are you okay?

Hello to all others. I hope that everyone will have a good week coming up.

Ruby
