west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

rain lily and LA Iris Debbie here

great digging weather for the LA's but I'm beginning to resemble a mudbug or crawfish--mighty muddy fields result in mighty dirty digger--I should post a pic of my jeans tonight--lol

;)

I do not have HBO but that is a great picture!!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Did you notice the beautyberries starting to color up on that last picture?

completely off topic here but the hibiscus always look their best in this heat, humidity, and hordes of mosquitoes

wake me up when September ends....

Now that is a beauty!! I do not grow the tropical hibs. They freeze out where I am.

I don't have HBO either.

I've been thinking about beautyberry....marie, have you tried that one?

Marie and all--

Here's one for you--whoever thinks Lycoris need rain to bloom, needs to rethink that concept. We have not had a drop of rain in 3 weeks here, not a drop from Gustov, or any where else either. This yellow is opening up this morning.

This is definitely not L chinensis (its too hot here for that one), not L traubii, or L aurea. Its one I've been working on an ID for, I think I now know which one it is but I'm going to hold off on that call until I see a few more of them bloom.

The only reason I noticed it was blooming was because I was putting the sprinkler out there since that bed has had no water in 3 weeks. I was helping my brother pack his pickup truck up to go home to Groves, Texas--he was evacuating over here (they did not get but about 9 drops of rain out of Gustove either--and you can throw a stone across the Neches river, which runs next to his house, and hit Louisiana). I am glad he came though, was a very nice visit and I sent him home with a bunch of bulbs and Louisiana Iris to grow out for me. He lives in one of the houses my dad had when he was still alive. That will make the 3rd different location for my growing fields--that should help thwart the thieves in Texas that think its OK to dig bulbs out of graveyards, old homesteads (they seemingly forget that property actually belongs to someone), and even off people's property they know that people live on. I've never had a problem with that myself but 2 of my other growing fields are located on gun dealers property. That might be why--lol. But my two other friends that own BIG bulb companies in Texas have had a lot of problems with thieves.

Not the greatest pics but I was also trying to adjust the water and it was getting late in the morning. Best shots are always early in the morning (and I'm never up then--lol) or late evening.

That is really pretty. I like the color. I look forward to finding out its identity!! That is sad about people robbing graveyards. 3 growing areas huh? That is great. I am so glad Gustof was not a bad hurricane.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

not in Texas Marie--but it did a lot of damage in Louisiana!

I like the yellow ones best too--its still too early for L aurea and L traubii--maybe because yellow is a good fall color? Fall? Its 95F here today--lol

editted to add--Actually Marie, several Texas people have actually bragged about digging bulbs from graveyards on this forum in the past (and the not to distant past either). They think they are abandoned but they are actually old family graveyards and they are on privately owned property. I've always thought that said a lot about them as people myself--but besides that its not a very healthy past-time in Texas either. Texas is a shoot to kill state--that means you have the right to shoot to kill anyone on your property stealing your property. Not that I in anyway condone shooting people over property--I would just hold them until the sheriff arrived myself. But they might just be on someone's property that doesn't see it like I do or some older people who are just scared and shoot first and ask questions later. Something they should remember....
