Hi Hippi,

I am one who does not do a lot on this thread.
Well, it varies! Many times I just look and read what others are doing. Sometimes I think about posting something, but then I do not. A few times I have posted pictures.

I went to my latest uploaded pictures to my computer from my digital camera just now. Don't know for sure what I will post...have lilies, fuchsias, other things, and a very different flower. I will need to go out and write down the name to put with the picture.

think I will first put the picture on and see if any one knows what it is. One hint. It comes from china!!
Here it is.

oh Dear!!
No, no picture. I forgot how to put a picture here!
Need to go see if I saved the directions from last time...

So, you see, Hippi, not all of us knows just what we are doing on this forum! But I can only speak for myself!!

If I came more often and posted pictures, I would remember how to do it!!
Oh well! Will put that strange china flower on at another time!

WillieB, Dave runs a photo contest for all of the DGer's at the endish of the year - there are several catagories and everyone is invited to put in as much or as little as they like. The selection is wonderful, with some photos at pro-level and some so touching and personal that they get loads of votes (the selection of the winner is by popular vote) - thats the nice thing it is never obvious who is going to win: could be the very personal amateur's photo or it could be the very beautifully composed almost-professional. Its lots of fun - the only restriction is no computer generated high tech alterations.

We're all looking forward to your Chinese Flower quiz - pop the photo up and lets see how good we all are - I'm betting on this group to have someone who will know. There are some brillant plants people here!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Bea!! Your hibiscus is beautiful. Is it hardy or do you keep it inside in the winter?

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

My Mom sent this photo in an e-mail today. Since I can't pass the
e-mail to everyone on DG, I thought I would share the photo and a bit of the discription of the photo.

THE ONLY FLAG THAT DOES NOT FLY:

Between the fields where the flag is planted, there are over nine miles of flower fields that go all the way to the ocean. The flowers are grown by seed companies. It's a beautiful place, close to Vandenberg AFB. Check out the dimensions of the flag. The Floral Flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide and maintains the proper Flag dimensions, as described in Executive Order #10834. This Flag is 6.65 acres and is the first Floral Flag to be planted with 5 pointed Stars, comprised of White Larkspur. Each Star is 24 feet in diameter; each Stripe is 30 feet wide. This Flag is estimated to contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants, with 4-5 flower stems each, for a total of more than 2 million flowers.

While I am posting flowers, i will post a couple other ones.

Am not sure if this is a new begonia this year or not. I think it is.
So very different! Yes, got a blue ribbon at the Port Townsend fair.

Bea, great flag! now wouldnt it be just awesome if something like that was planted where United flight 93 went down?

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Good idea.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

WillieB, I love that little flower. The plant has a very herb-like look to it, doesn't it? I wonder if it isn't an oregano or related to an oregano?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Just rereading the thread . . .

Holly, I saw lots of Queen Anne's Lace in Oregon this weekend and every time I saw it I thought of you . . .

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Great Flag, thats the whole Rose Parade in one beautiful presentation.
WoW.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Willie - is it one of the Geum family? Where's Katie59, she and Katye are brillant at this.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Well, Kat(ye)'s brilliant at it. I'm still in the "hit or miss" category. :-) I still think it looks like an herb - marjoram or oregano.

Chimacum, WA

So far, no one has come close. Did you get a good look at the blossom?
It is a vining plant. The flower color is not typical of the family. But the shape is.

It is not a geum, oregano, or marjoram.

But one might call it an herb - one common name calls it a false ____.....which is used by Chinese medicine.

It comes from China. The 'Far Reaches Farm" in Port Townsend is where I purchased it. The pot was overflowing so i divided it and now have 6 pots of it (Small to medium sized pots). They may not know that it is called a false _____
I went on line after I divided it and found that it does not like to be disturbed! Don't know where they got that information! All of it grew! You end up with a lot of plants in the pot.
It has a big tap root, which the Chinese use for medicine.

I will post more later. - after you take a closer look at it and think some more.
I doubt that any of you have seen it before. But it would be nice if you have!

Betty

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Willieb, could your plant be False Bittersweet?
Celastrus orbiculatus

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

On a first observation, the form is the same as Platycodon, or Balloon flower. I'll get my Hortus III out & have a look. I THINK that Platycodon is part of the Campanulaceae group.
I will check out the leaves, though.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

As far as I can see from the photos, the leaves look ovate, crenate, arranged opposite, and glabrous; flower form - campanulate. Scandent growth?
It's hard to tell from the photos.
I'm stumped. You might put this one on the plant ID forum. Very nice color, veination.

Chimacum, WA

I am glad to know, Katye, that you know where to look!

Yes, it is a vining member of the Campanula family.

Botanical name:

I have quite a few campanulas and am always looking for unusual flowers, so this really caught my eye!

It is also called a false ginseng.
Some people use it like they do ginseng. You would have to grow a Lot of it, to have enough roots to use medicinally. It does have a fat tap root.

It is not in Dave's plant files.
Here is a link to some info on it.
http://www.ibiblio.org/pfaf/cgi-bin/arr_html?Codonopsis+tangshen

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Adenophora polymorpha? Could not link, so I used the backdoor method. =:0)

Where did you find this? It is very cool & the growth habit is fun. (Well, insofar as I define "fun"....)

Very little info on it. What intrigued me is that the predominant colours in the Campanulaceae family tend to blue/purple/pink/white. So this chartreuse-y hue made me think twice.
If you are able to do cuttings, or grow from seed, please post. My curiousity needs to be satisfied: more trivia to stuff in my brain.
