August Blooms Part 1

(Zone 1)

Since we are now into the dog days of August I thought we needed a new thread. I have no Gessie's in bloom right now so I'm beginning with a walk down memory lane. This is a beautiful yellow flowering columnea that I had for a couple of years. I have a couple still out on the deck that look awfully scraggly and this one may be one of them, Rasta being the other. They are still alive, barely. After looking at this picture I should go out and give them some TLC and see if I can save the poor things.

Anyhow ... this is (I think) Columnea "Carnival"

That is very pretty, plantladylin!

Here is a baby that I got from Gail . . . it is in a pot that is labeled Tunnel Vision . . . I know that first blooms may not look exactly like a bloom on a full grown plant . . . but this could also have been mixed up during the "incident".

Lovely photos!

I am hoping I get some pots in the mail today. I tracked one of my packages. I keep telling my violets that help is on the way, ha. I don't like to keep tons of supplies and I got caught without bigger pots. I have plenty of small ones. My surgery kind of slowed me down too on ordering.

Won't be long. I can't wait to get everything. Reg. pots and Oyama pots, other supplies too. I will have TOO many pots soon.

I will be watering them today. Reserviors are low.

My Snuggle's Little Girl is about to open her buds! A cutie.

Beautiful flowers, ladies!

Here is Shenandoah Shiloh - new bloom opened yesterday. One of my favorites!

Oh, how I wish I could figure out how to keep Strep's alive at my house! Those are really beautiful! Syru: I looked up Tunnel Vision and it shows a purple bloom, but pink is a favorite color of mine so I love that plant of yours.

Erica: Wow! Shenandoah Shiloh is gorgeous! It looks a lot like another purple one I've seen Gail post photo's of before but didn't remember that name. Of course there are lots of purple strep's out there. I just love that deep color.

Gail: I hope you are feeling better and having a good day! I know that Tropical Storm Edouard came ashore in SE Texas this morning and I know y'all are getting a lot of rain! Hope everyone in it's path is faring well. It hit North of where you are but I bet you are feeling the effects too!

Here's a story . . . Family and I went to Corpus on Sunday. Great day for the beach. Found 2 LIVE sand dollars . . . dug a hold to bury kids and DH in the sand (for future reference - do NOT use those little kid plastic shovels - they bite!) and now have the resulting sore muscles. Stopped by Gail's place after. She gathered up 2 boxes of little plants for me (Nice setup she's got, too!). She helped me carry them out to the car . . . I reached in the window to pop the trunk (it was cool enough by that time), and as I turned around, I slipped on the rocks and the box/tray I was carrying went flying out in front of me. Oh, I felt so bad . . . my little babies on the rocks . . . (until I saw the cut in my knee, then I felt a bit sorry for myself!) . . . but then my sympathies went back to the babies! There were quite a few broken leaves on the ground . . . plants had evacuated their pots . . . Gail helped me pick them back up and get them back in the tray before DH and the kids came back around the corner. Gail spilled the beans, though, so I had to stand still while DS inspected my knee! He scolded me and told me to "stand still, mommy!" lol

Got the plants home, and as of this morning, they all seem to be looking good! You can see where there were some blooms . . . but the plants themselves look good.

I wouldn't be suprised if markers that were in the little pots got dislodged as well . . . Gail has identified one of the victims for me already, and I'm sure once she is up to speed again, she will help me figure out which is what on the few remaining! In the meantime, I'm doing what you did, plantladylin, and am looking up pictures on the internet!

Thanks, cedarnest!

Syru: Sounds like you and your family had a great day at the beach! We are only about a mile from the ocean but never seem to go. We've only had our boat out once this year! Seems like we never find the time anymore.

Oh, I am glad you are okay after that fall! Wow, that was a close call, you could have needed stitches or broken a bone! I am happy you are alright. Now, isn't our Miss Gail just the sweetest gal? I know you got some great babies from her, she is so very generous! Keep us posted on how they are doing. Oh .... and, welcome to the Klutz Klub, LOL. ^_^ I'm so glad it's not just me. Although, I don't need to have anything in my hands to lose my balance - I can just trip over my own two feet!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Believe me, I became a lifetime member of the Klutz Klub many years ago! I don't usually need anything in my hands either (I could be just standing there!). . . and I've been doing so well lately! DH reminded me on the ride home that I was overdue for something to happen!

Gail did show me the bruise she was talking about last week . . . did look a bit nasty.

Amazingly enough, it is not the cut knee that looks worse - it's the other one! I'd really like to know how I fell forward (which explains the palms!), scraped the right elbow, got a small cut on the front of the left knee, and the bruise on the inside of my right knee! That must have been a sight!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am feeling so badly that you took a such a hard fall, Nichole....................you really took one!

Don't hesitate to send pictures and see if we can put things back together again with names, etc....................I simply just have a good case of the shingles............don't go anywhere........so I am here any time................

Also, if something dies that you really want, just speak up............it , too , can be replaced......

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Oh, Gail, I'm fine! The cuts will heal, and the bruises will go away! What is worse for me is the aching muscles from digging in the sand!

I have my little babies all over the kitchen . . . some on the dining table, a few in the kitchen window, some on the island . . . I'm going to bring in my cheapy greenhouse shelves from the garage temporarily to put everything on, until I can finish working on fixing my bakers rack . . . even the little baby that lost post of its perlite is still nice and green! Will repot that one tonite, too.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Just don't stress out about what you lose.......they took as hard a fall as 'Mom' did! (LOL)

I am not going to order any more streps from LL or Rob's.........they are just too small........when I can grow them better, bigger and nicer why pay for their postage (a lot).....They are in 1" squares.......not 2" square........and wilting.......don't even absorb water like they should. Trying to get up enough energy today or tomorrow to plant them up.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Take care of yourself, before you stress to much about your plants. Do what "needs" to be done, but then relax and recooperate!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just took a few pics as we need some........will take some later, also.
I am in love with this sininnigia Xandau times itself...........now I can't remember what I named the file...............be back later

Ellerbe, NC(Zone 8a)

This is a bad picture and doesn't do justice to Rebecca times herself!

Ellerbe, NC(Zone 8a)

Oh yeah!!!! You got my box. I was just over there today trying to find the name of someone I owe a DL to. My computer died last winter too. Wierd!!! All my e-mail addys and all my word documents with peoples addys were all lost. Boy it is so devastating when that happens. I feel like it's going to take me years to get back what I lost.

This summer has been really harsh on my DL. They just haven't multiplied like they should have. I'll be glad when this drought NC is going through breaks. It started spring of 2007 and has still got us under it's thumb.

GW is just so unorganized. There's no way to search for posts. But I did run across the one about the White Elephant round robin. Hope everything did really well for ya. I have no Idea what I sent. LOL No memory left in this pea brain of mine.

I'm glad I found my way back here. I let my subscription lapse for years while I was off doing other things. Feels like coming back home.

Sinningia 'Pink Sparkler'

Thumbnail by av_ocd_girl

Oh Pink Sparkler is a beauty Roxy..I agree totally with DG feeling more like home..thats sad about your daylilies and the drought..the ones you sent me are looking good..I can't remember what I received either..lol...all that is on my dead hard drive..lol..now I finally know to make a backup of everything on good ol' paper..of course sometimes I lost the paper too..lol..

Gail that Xanadu x self is sure pretty and I love the bloom on Colorado Sunset..well actually all of them are gorgeous..I am sure I have asked this before to someone but how large can some of the Sinningias get?I better get off here..hubby is home..might slip back on later..lol

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Some of them can get really big, Nancy.............right now Xanadu isn't a big plant but she looks like she can get a lot bigger than this. Also, I just had Dandy Blue go dormant on me. I cleaned her tuber off and left a one inch stem..........check out how big her tuber is

She is sitting in a 16" plastic bowl.........

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Woah Gail...looking at the size of that tuber I am afraid to think of how big some of them can grow..The blooms they get are sooo neat!

(Zone 1)

Wow Nancy ... Your bloomers are so pretty! So many of y'all do so well with Strep's ... I am envious of those gorgeous blooms! Yep, I adore the teeny micro mini Sinningia's. I only have the two (pusilla and rio das pedras) but they are soo cute. I love the idea of planting one of those teeny ones in a bottle cap! Do you put holes in the bottom for drainage or just watch the watering carefully? I think I might have to give that a try ... off to salvage a bottle cap! Then I'm outta here to run some errands, grocery store, home depot and stopping by my friends to let her grand dog out!

Have a great day everyone!

Oh ... Gail, I hope that shingles rash is getting better! It sure looks awful ... hopefully that rx cream is working! I am so fortunate that I have never had shingles and I hope I never come down with even a mild case ... talk about hearing some whining - I would be heck to live with! You hang in there and get better soon!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks lin..no holes in the bottle cap..I just make sure I watch the watering..I keep them each in their own tiny lidded jar so I don't need to water too often..I just love these little guys to pieces...hmm you only have the 2 micros huh..lol..well in that case I will be adding a couple in your tradebox I will be sending you in a couple weeks...
Gail those shingles I am sure are making you miserable..hope they fun a fast course for you!
