Thanks for the info re using compensated flash, wallaby. If I can figure out how to do it on my new camera I'll give it a try. I used the in-camera flash yesterday to get some shots of Rainbow Lorikeets and Port Lincoln Ringnecks (28"s) having a battle over nesting hollows and most came out looking quite garish. The Rainbow Lorikeets are garish but I think the flash exaggerated it a bit. These beautiful birds are an absolute menace.
Thanks for the tip, adelbertcat. That one put up a struggle just to get the eyebrows done.

Nanny, you have the silliest crows.
They just have personality!!
I've got to go back to 9:56 a.m. Knopfia - What are those unusual birds? They look like they are wearing hoods. Love all the various birds everyone. What a good idea about the cap Nanny.
Interesting bird the pied wagtail Wallaby.

Domesticated farm Guineafowl.

Very nice pics guys!
The way I usually catch the eye on a dark bird is by putting it (the camera) on burst mode and keep shooting. One of the photos usually catches a momentary hit on the sun reflecting off the birds eye. I'll have to look for a Chickadee pic of that.
Thanks, pelle. I'm still navigating my way around my new camera. I'll read up on burst mode.

Methodical, I'm so long winded, it would undoubtedly bore everyone else, so I'll D Mail you.
LOL Margaret.
Methodical, here's an old thread that might be of some use… it is a list of what everyone was using (back in March, at least!)

Cool. Thanks
In the last thread someone shared the area where she gets her bird shots, so wanted to share mine.
It is just my backyard, which backs to woods (there's a steep drop off at the edge of the grass/trees). I also have some large arborvitae/white cedar on the property line, which the birds love using (you can see a couple smaller ones in this picture). I'm slowly getting rid of the grass, and this right side will be more shrubs and woodland like (if I pull it off).
Those are two red maples in the middle of the back, and I planted a couple hybrid maples and crabapples recently, and they are slowly gaining popularity. In fact, the small crabapple next to the deck stairs is beloved by the chickadee and titmouse as a way station to/from the feeders.
I rotate my feeders -- when used ones need cleaning I pull out clean ones to replace. Then the used ones sit until I get around to cleaning them :) or until they become dry, which has been an issue with all the rain we've had this year.
And that is a "pondless" pond system, which is getting more and more popular.
very nice!!!
Oohhh, I want to come to your house! That is really pretty.
Eastern Bluebird...this was taken saturday. I saw him last night in his usaul spot and he was making the saddest sound. I saw a couple juvies...there were 4... and some HOSP, but I didn't see the female. I can usually see her, but she doesn't come close enough for pics. :(
Nanny, I just saw a bald female today. Looked just like your girl did last week!
cute
I've been watching a fun show this morning. A pair of chickadees eating and chasing each other.
Can't quite figure out what is going on. They aren't chasing other species. working on getting some pictures.
A pair of chickadees eating each other ????
eww.
yah, need to watch what I'm writing I suppose.
I need a nap.
Like the panda, which eats shoots and leaves ;-)
Ha! I didn't read it that way, Mrs_Ed :) I've been watching the same thing lately. Not sure what is going on either.
And I'm glad to see the female cardinal's head no longer is just her eyeball!
And y'all are welcome any time to hang out and watch the birds. One of these days I'm going to get the umbrella fixed so I can sit out there and not get burned alive by the afternoon sun. The patio is on the left side of the yard, which you can't see here, and is near the waterfall. You just have to watch for the bird poop on the outdoor furniture :)
I keep thinking one of these days I'm going to set up some kind of web cam system so I can catch things I wouldn't ordinarily catch....esp on film. If I had a camera ready, I could share a pileated woodpecker feeding its young (who doesn't look so young anymore). What a (kinda violent) sight!
Maybe in our lifetime we'll be able to share snapshots from your memory, like having a camera in our eye, or maybe eyeglasses, that responds to your thoughts.
well, one can dream :)
Hmmm... don't know if I want eyeglase that respond to my thoughts!!! LOL
Nice backyard evie, great bird paradise.
Methodical, cute pic of American Goldfinch, and like your inquisitive dove.
Beautiful bird those Lorikeets, very colorful. You really have some nice birds Margaret.
Nanny hope the HOSP didn't do anything to that female bluebird.
Nice pics today everyone, sorry I have none on my computer to share as I have everything on an external hard drive and have to learn how to access it...makes me tired just thinking about it!
Evie..your backyard looks like a bird paradise!
One of the Male Cardinals was back again feeding his offspring (not) ...a young Cowbird!
Uncle Fester's twin sister?
