That head is too small for the body!!!

I had another female cardinal that was starting to get the feathers back and had just a few on here head sticking up. I'm sorry to say I did not get a picture of that, but it gave me a good chuckle anyway.

Metairie, LA

I know that cats "puff up" to make themselves look big (and hence threatening). Maybe birds do the same - most puffed up bird I'd ever seen.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

That Pigeon looks like those fat figurines they have in Wal Mart...too funny!

Mrs. Ed...that poor Cardinal needs a wig!!

This Barn Swallow spent some time in the dead tree today...they never land there!! I think maybe the barn roofs are too hot as that is where they often congregate.

I LOVE watching barn swallows. Amazing flying! What a treat to see them all stationary.

And I'm not sure which cardinal wig is funnier. Can you do one with a beehive do?

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Nanny...he DOES look like Doc Brown from Back to the Future! Ha...too funny!

Evie...I love those Swallows too, the way they fly is amazing. I think the coolest thing about them is all the chattering they do...they always sound like they are chewing each other out!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Here's a male Cardinal...looks like he is molting from the backside!

mrw, my Wood Pigeons puff up like that when it's very cold.

rose, your Barn Swallows are a sight, looks like they are having a twitter amongst themsleves!

To add to the tatty bird theme, lol, I had some young Pheasants in my garden yesterday. The males were trying out their voices, haven't quite got it right yet! There was 2 males with a female nearby, they went out to my road and another female flew from nearby. I guess mom and pop told them they could find some food here.

This one has a crooked beak.

Absolutely beautiful pheasants Wallaby! I love to see these birds, although not about 6 feet from the front of my car when they dash across the road!
A goldfinch was singing on top of a neighbour's TV aerial when I got home from work yesterday.

Love those pics from the UK!

Here is a Bewick's Wren that I've been seeing around the yard. It landed in front of me on the fake tree I had set up for the BB's to fledge to (which they didn't use). I had one keep me company last winter and enjoy the meal worms in the feeding cage.

Here is my fake tree I put on the backyard hummer feeder hook. If you look real close...shot this through the screen ata about 5ft away... top left and bottom right under the feeder, you will see hummers perched.

We have had no orioles since last week so I assume our have left. The thrashers that were nesting close that came to my yard are gone . But I did see one this morning down the road.

Great pics all!

I was just out in the backyard and saw the squirrels had chewed all the perches off my nyjer upside down feeder.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

d'oh!!!

They did that to my cheap plastic one. Then I bought the other one with metal and the birds don't like it as well.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Bad bad squirrels!! I want to get one of those upside down feeders.

PERTH, Australia

A male Musk Duck. These fellow have the most amazing mating display, inflating the throat pouch, then lifting themselves out of the water, before slapping themselves down with outstretched wings, making a huge splash. Their legs are set far back on their bodies so when seen out of water they almost look like penguins. In the water they kinda look like a platypus.

Love the shot of the male Cardinal feeding the Cowbird, Rose. Those Cowbirds sure live a care-free life, leaving their young for others to raise. I just bought a new suet feeder (all metal). The one I got a couple years ago (wood) for the woodpeckers is being destroyed by the squirrels. I was surprised they left it alone for so long.

Love the Musk Duck Margaret!
