New MG's for me 2008 #4

Gautier, MS

This is a cross from Berlin Blue so I like to call it Berlin Blue Swirl,
no 2 blooms are alike.

I separated 4 vines that were together so I can collect seeds without getting them mixed up. I really like this bloom.

This is the other vine I separated. A few of the vines have slowed down on blooming, I'm so glad we had some good rain last night.

Helena - This one really got my attention! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5388192 Very, very nice each and every one of them!!! That Plum Surprise just keeps getting better and better with each bloom! Amazing! And your Berlin Blue Swirl is divine! Great name too! :-) Don't worry about showing us the same vines more than once or twice or however many times! I am enjoying them and you can take and post as many photos of them as you want! They are a joy to see! :-) :-)

I think there is something happening in Helena's environment that is causing unusual colors to appear and this may sound strange but I think it is actually a pigment inhibitor...

I've been watching ever seen I first saw it in helena's blooms, but wanted to wait until I had seen enough to be sure of what I was seeing...
the inhibitor is causing the upper layer of color pigments that would ordinarily fade by the end of the day,be inhibited by cold or induced by tissue damage to be automatically inhibited...thereby causing the unusual colors that are being seen now earlier in the day...

I think something is ultimately acting as an enzyme inhibitor and as to whether it will be also cause lasting genetic mutations remains to be seen...

There are certain geographical areas that always seem to produce more unusual colors and other tissue related effects......all enzymatically controlled...
Gourd gets a much higher percentage of reversed tubes than anyone else in the world...e.g., Ohio,Great Lakes area and Texas...mining areas, particular waterways (watersupplies) and what else ???...something causing unusual mineral proportions and other elements...no offense intended, but it may be a side effect of some type of environmental pollution...

The morning glories respond by producing unusual shapes and color patterns...

P.S. - Well water ?

Really lovely and remarkable flowers you are growing, Helena!

Ron, maybe it is a delayed Hurricane Katrina effect on the soil in some way.

Lin . . .
Thank you - The Grays have just been gorgeous. I've lost count now, but I think I've ended up with about 6 or so different Grays.

Ron . . .
VERY interesting analysis of Helena's incredible blooms.

I want some of whatever it is PLEASE :o)

Helena . . .

Fascinating deduction by Ron concerning Helena's very unusual colors and patterns showing up in her blooms. I am hoping she is able to share seeds. It will be very interesting to see what others get from her seeds. That sounds like a very good theory on why these blooms are so far from the norm. Now let's hope that this mutant factor becomes part of the next generation genes! :-) :-) That would be even more interesting if they do carry these traits. Very, very interesting!!! Either way, the original seeds are producing some beautiful blooms whether or not an enzyme inhibitor is what is changing the blooms.

That's interesting about A's vines producing a higher percentage of reversed tubes. I didn't realize she was getting so many blooms like that.

MG vines seem very sensitive to their environment and the effects show up immediately. Maybe they could be used like doves (air quality) to check soil quality in a select areas.

Thank you Becky, Joseph, Emma and Ron you are right about the color changes (inhibitor) cause it disappears after a couple hours.
Ron I really like the names you gave "Purple Velvet" & Royal Robe/ Star of India to ID the blooms so I'm going to use them.

This mornings blooms.
Good morning violet.

Very nice Helena

Thanks Jackie, you are too nice. We got lots of rain last night & it's still raining heavily off & on. All the blooms are facing down.

Mai Sugata is exquisite. I also like the bumble bee butt in one of your blue blooms. They really squeeze in my Rose of Sharon Blooms. Your morning glories are beautiful.
