Me too, very pretty Helena.

Helena - Lovely photo of all the different looking blooms! How tall are your vines now?

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie and Becky. They must be over 4 ft. First I had Plum Surprise growing on the tomato cage & I was winding the vines around. After I planted them in the ground I added the other wire fence & am still winding them back & forth.

I watched a bumblebee go back & forth from Lavender Mist to Plum Surprise & am wondering what the outcome will be from this match if there'll be seeds!!

I wish I had picked up the spent blooms before taking this pic!

Just b/c they are pretty!

Helena - Sounds like you might get some crosses with the pollination by the bees! That might be a good thing in case one of your vines isn't producing pollen. I believe they are all I. nils, so they would be able to be crossed. :-) And I am sure the seeds will produce more unusal and beautiful vines. :-) That's the true beauty of MGs! The possibilities are endless! :-)

And this one too from Plum Surprise!!

This one must be a rarer cultivar as I seldom see this color grown. It looks "yellow", but is it a light orange? Is that one "Pumpkin"? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5361788 If not, what is the name?

Beautiful blooms and some great photos! Such a pleasure to view them all even if it is only in cyberspace! ;-)

Yes Becky that's .hederifolia var. lutea that Ron ID'd for me, I gave the extra name of "Pumpkin" b/c it's not yellow & it has the orange markins. I did buy the yellow from ebay last year & grew next to the red ones.

Here's Velvet Plum Not.

Love the red Mt Fuji.

What do you all use for trellis's for your MG. If you have a lot of them buying the trellis's would be very expensive. And how tall do you need for most MG's. I only have one and it is wrapping its self off of a trellis and on to a tree. I would love to have more but not sure how to maintain them. Thanks Elaine

I use circular tomato cages, they work great in containers.

Thank you for your reply. I can do that and I will get some MGs. Do they grow from seed only or will they grow from a cutting? Elaine

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Elaine - Did you grow Hattie Bell? I grow mine along two different fences. I also grow mine in large pots using Bamboo poles tied at the top to look like teepees:

Gautier, MS

Thanks Jackie. I like that breight red color.

Elaine, I'm using the wire tomato cages on some of my mg's & wind the vines all around it. I have 2-3 vines, I think they're only 3-4 ft tall but so far the easiest for collecting seeds as long as they're far enough from the other mg's. I also use bamboo sticks & make a teepee & let them climb on that, that has worked good too.
I bought wire fence & let the vines climb on it but will just have to tag the blooms that I want seeds from. Some have gotten very aggressive.

Becky, beautiful purple blizzard. I'm still waiting on mine to bloom.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - Ooooh! Beautiful bloom color on this one: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5369581

Elaine - Some of the folks here have used livestock fencing to make all kinds of obelisks and arbors. Emma came up with a brilliant idea using livestock fencing: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5325325

Thanks Becky, I'll have to look up the name on the lable & update it later.

I want to know if the lable on this one is right. Mai SugataYoujiro????

This one is another without lable.

I checked the container it was in, it's either from a trade or from a cross from last year. I know I didn't have it last year.

Plum Surprise.

The last five photos are of plants that are out of this WORLD, Helena, WOW WOW WOW!!

Do you have them growing separately so you can collect "clean" not mixed cultivar seeds?

Joseph

Gautier, MS

Thanks Joseph. I guess the answer is going to be no. I made a big mistake by planting more than one plant in pots and my backyard is small and the mg's are too close together so I really don't know what to expect. Velvet Plum I did plant a bit away from the others and I see a few seed pods. But I still have seeds left of a few others that I save for next time. Better planning next time I guess. I will try to collect seeds though.

Only 3 Plum Surprises today.

Becky I've updated that post, the lable says Hein no Akatsuki.

Before the cold weather gets here I'm going to take cuttings of a few special vines & continue to grow them if it works out.

Helena . . .

BEAUTIFUL!

This one is not Mai Sugata
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5371072

The bloom looks like Youjiro Yagaruma [also spelled Yaguruma]
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/89048/
however, the leaves do not. If this MG has Variegated leaves, it has crossed.

I have quite a few crosses from Yagaruma this year that have variegated Youjiro leaves.

This one
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5371089
is not Plum Frost
it IS 'Awesome'.
Looks like you have a cross

Also this is not Velvet Plum
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5371100
If you grew Velvet Plum, yours is a sport of it.

Emma

Here is what Velvet Plum looks like
This is not the best photo, but was what I could find at the moment.
I'll also see if I can find a good photo of my blooms from this year

Yes I do grow Hattie Bell that a wonderful DG friend sent me. That was my grandmothers name and I am so pleased to have it. The ideas are great and I will use some of them. Thank you so much. The bamboo is available here and I can cut all that I need. Beautiful flowers. I'm would pay postage for any of these lovelies if they are available.

Unbelievable blooms Helena. Your's have all been beauties this yr.

New Castle, IN

All are beautiful but the silvery lavender one is awesome. Would love to have some seeds.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

I agree with Emma on this one here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5371072
not maisugata...doesn't exactly fit any of the known types...may be some type of youjiro sport or cross...

possibly Furisode
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5371078

Excellent blooms (!)...

Ron
