Gotta love those blizzard types!

Ronnie - if you get enough seeds for this one, remember me! (I'll put them on my want list in my journal, so I'LL remember, too!) http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5349992

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Me, too! :-) Such a pretty colored bloom! I guess I need to start a list myself. LOL!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I think you should . . . since it was your idea to start a "want" list for the end of the season (for your seeds, anyway)! ^_^

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Nichole - I have my list of seeds that I have to offer in my garden blog. So when people want to trade with me, I just give them that link and tell them to check it out and pick what they like. I am a visual person and need to see photos of the blooms to remember them. There are so many MG cultivars that I can't keep them all straight in this old brain of mine! LOL!

I wish everyone would do a garden blog similar to this for seed trades (this is last year's blog link):
http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/beckygardener/7239/

Each cultivar has it's own blog link with photos I upload so I can remember what I grew and how the vine and blooms looked. My blog for this year so far is not complete yet.

I wish I was even partially organized . . . not nearly as much as you are!!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Deb - Nice, VERY NICE!!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5350562

Nichole - I start my blogs and then add a photo here and there (as I get a good shot). And before ya know it, the blog is finished. It is so much easier for me to do that, than to try to find photos for folks who want to know what certain cultivars look like. Many are not in plantfiles. And sometimes mine are from a cross which looks so different than plantfiles.

On my computer, I have a folder for MGs by year (MG 2008) and in that folder are separate folders for every single MG grown. I move pictures to the appropriate cultivar folder as I download them from my camera. The folder is just labeled with the cultivar name. So I will go thru those folders and try to find good photos for my DG Garden Blog. If I didn't do that, I wouldn't remember which photo belongs to what cultivar. I'm too new at growing MGs to know and remember all the cultivars I grow at one time. I also have my growing areas and pots numbered (on paper) and those numbers are cross referenced to what cultivar each vine is. Makes IDing vines and seed collecting much easier for me. My memory just isn't as good as it used to be. Or maybe I am just so busy with so many things that I just can't remember everything. I'm like a teenager ... I have to be told something 25 times before I remember it! LOL!

Everyone has their own method of cataloging information and photos. That's just my way. I just do what works for me ... believe me, I am NOT that organized. I pretend to be! LOL LOL LOL

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

This year and last I've started out fairly organized . . . each plant got it's own folder, then as I took pix, they'd go in the appropriate folder . . . then as time goes on, the all get loaded under Misc . . . I've got a bit of sorting to do!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Momcat, Kannami is a real beauty! Where did you find it?

Nichole and Becky I am sure my reddish one will make lots of seeds. Yours and any one else for the taking!!!

Becky how do you do that blog thing? I like that idea...

By the way... thanks for keeping us on track Jackie! ☺

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Ronnie - Go to "My Tools" tab at the top: http://davesgarden.com/tools/
You will see Your Gardening Blog. Just click on that and play around with it. If you have any further questions, ask here or d-mail me. I could've used the Garden Journal, but it doesn't allow you separate tabs for each cultivar or topic. I have more than just MGs in my blog. I have pets, garden critters, my gardens, etc. I did that because there are so many times when someone on DG will ask me about one of those topics and they want to see a photo and I can't find the photo as quickly as I can reference that link. It keeps my posts from being so repetitive with photos. And it makes it so much easier for me personally. I'm all about keeping it simple and easy!

Ronnie - I would definitely like seeds of the reddish I. purpurea. And some others, too ... :-)

Remember those Ensign Mixed seeds I was growing in a pot. Well I've been getting buds, but the blooms won't open all the way. And the plant doesn't looks so good either. Probably rust on that one too. :-( Here's a photo of a partially open blue bloom. They are cute little flowers, but they seem rather particular to how they are grown. I don't know. I would have loved to see them all bloom in different colors. I've only seen the blue try to bloom.

Really nice flowers everyone!!

Here is a full flower of Janett's Chocolate JMG, it looks like milk chocolate to me!

Here is a new one that flowered up today - Asagiri JMG. I suspect it will throw quite a few variations on a theme of this color pattern!

Lastly, Dainagon JMG. It seems to stay open most of the day if it is a cloudy day.

Joseph - This one is quite lovely! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5351698

All are really nice! :-)

I am enjoying all the blooms everyone! Keep posting away! :-)

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Oh, Joseph - I love the Asagiri!!!

Becky, I really like Janett's Chocolate too, really big flowers, and now they seem to open up perfectly.

Nichole, I agree with you, it dropped my jaw when I first saw it! LOL

Here's a step-back view of Asagiri...it was a little ragged but a welcome sight!

The Kannami is from a pack of seeds I inherited from my mom. She was in on a couple of JMG seed co-ops that Sandy organized several years ago. This pack of seeds was from one of those co-ops, I believe. Mom never even opened the pack. I just love the flowers on this one, I wish she would have gotten to enjoy them, too.

Deb

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Deb - I would be interested in trading some seeds for some of your Kannami. I think I would like to try to cross some of those blooms with some blooms on Kokhan.

Joseph - Isn't that a wonderfully patterned bloom?!!! Your Asagiri is a real eye-catcher! :-)

Deb, can you photograph the packet if it was a commercial foil packet and post it here? It would be way interesting to see it!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

You know what to do, Joseph . . . put me on "the list"!!!!

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Joseph, here is a link to a picture of the package I posted quite a while ago, asking for an ID. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4345617

Ron has asked me to get a good clear scan of both the front and back of the package. I will try to get my scanner set up this weekend.

Thanks Emma. Your Fuji Momo is a beauty with it's
pinwheel bloom. Love the color.
Joseph, Asagiri is gorgeous in purple, pink and white.
Deb, your Kannami is very showy, I love it.
Becky, wonderful that you got your Blue Ensign bloom.
It's a beautiful blue

Jackie - The plant with the variegated heat shaped leaves at the beginning of this thread is unusual...

Regarding the
Kannami
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/175654/
Kannami and others in Kanji
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5056972

what comes to mind is that it looks like something of a cross between

hanahubuki
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/85885/

and

Kohkan
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/121106/

Here is an example of what I tried to clarify regarding the paper packet of Aogakiyama
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/RON_CONVOLVULACEAE_1212672944_234.jpg
1) a little 'collage' consisting of the full front of the packet

2) a closeup and enlargement of the upper left of the front packet showing the handwritten style Kanji and the Kana that appears as a tiny (!) line of characters to the upper right of the hand written style of Kanji

3) a closeup of the back portion of the packet that shows the name in printed style Kanji followed by the same Kana that is in tiny letters on the front, but in a larger much more readable size...the descriptions presented in Kana only characters do not appear in the catalog but only on the packets...

4) the name of the flower and the description from the catalog all in Kanji

I think this is worthwhile to document...

I'm hoping that some of the older members who were part of the early co-ops will eventually share closeup scans of the plastic markers with the individual cultivation hints...I'm not expecting any mindblowing secrets, but I think it would be a good thing to document and preserve...

Joseph - The bloom here is great
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5346648
but unless that is soil particles in the throat area, it looks like earwig or caterpillar droppings...if it is droppings, this is usually the result of the critters eating the inside lower reproductive parts...usually the ovary...

These are great blooms
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/momcat_1217550337_785.jpg
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5351745
but I think it is important to point out the condition of the anthers for general reference...

The complete set of the anthers are shriveled and brown on the Kannami as they are showing every sign of premature senescence although a couple of the anthers on the Asagiri look like they might be functional......this frequently occurs on highly inbred flowers and the parts which have premature senescence are totally non-functional as per any reproductive ability...

The stigma looks good and would likely function if hand pollinated from another flower with good pollen...sometimes the stigma is non-functional,but all or even one of the anthers may be producing pollen and this pollen can be used to pollinate other flowers with a good stigma...

Just sharing some observations and remedial thoughts on the matter...

Poor nutrition can sometimes cause repro parts to fail to mature or function, but when it results from being genetically overly inbred...there isn't anything that can be done about it except to carefully try and increase genetic diversity without loosing the characteristics that make the type...

Deb - I'm curious what your mothers davesgarden name was...if that is something that you feel okay about sharing...if not no sweat...

The entries for both

Kannami
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/175654/

and

Asagiri
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133772/

could use some flower and leaf photos...

TTY,...

Ron

Joseph,

I just love your "Janett's Chocolate MG". Really special... Please keep me in mind should you have seeds to share. :)

Elsa

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Great Picture here Joseph!! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5351698

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

Ron, it did look like frass to me as well. I hadn't noticed it before when I was taking the photo. I will check out the vine for an infestation.

Joseph

Sure Ron, my mom was DJM906, Doris. She was active on many forums here on Dave's for years. She passed away last year, from complications one year after a botched colonoscopy. She was hospitalized for that entire last year of her life. She was involved in at least two JMG seed co-ops that sbarr had several years ago. Many of those packs of seeds are still unopened.

I know, with my schedule, that I can only manage to keep separate a small number of varieties a year, and I don't want indiscriminate crosses. If I'm going to offer seeds for trade, I want to be fairly sure that the seeds are what I say I am offering. Since the MG seeds seem to have a fairly long shelf life, I have only been starting a few varieties a year. The other packs are kept in the fridge, sealed in the original packs.

When I get my scanner hooked up, I will scan whatever packs I have, if you are interested.

Wow, awesome blooms Deb,Joseph, Ronnie and Emma. Love them all!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - I see that frass in some of my blooms too from time to time. It's usually some kind of caterpillar or beetle larvae. Ugh ... But they are easy enough to rid yourself of them. :-)

Deb - That's a really neat story about your mother. I am wondering how long the MG forum here on DG has existed. I've only been here for a year now. That's neat that you have all those original seed packets that she had traded for and received from a couple of JMG co-ops. I didn't even know this forum had ever done co-ops! That's pretty cool! I am so sorry to hear she passed away, especially under the circumstances. {{{Hugs}}} I look forward to seeing her vines and blooms!

Emma - Fuji Momo with Unusual Brushed pattern is a lovely color and looks so perfect! Very nice vine!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Jackie and Becky -

Deb, I agree with Becky - great story about your mom, and to think you have some great JMG's to grow out in the future.
What fun!

Nice Deb!!!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Great blooms Deb.

Ron, I hope you will elaborate on my bloom at the beginning of this thread.
Was it the bloom or something about the lvs? That bloom was the only squared
off bloom I got last year.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Hey Jackie - I was mostly commenting on the mostly heart shaped leaves, although I can see the leaves producing a billowed notch which is the forerunner of the leaves potentially on a more tri-lobed shape...

TTY,...

Ron
