There is a Rivers and Estuary Center in Beacon. Sometime I will tell you about my experience with water issues. http://www.dec.ny.gov/environmentdec/18991.html
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 26
Dutchess is an old spelling and many people confuse it with the other way to spell it. It really is a beautiful area with plenty of history. Vassar is one of the most picturesque campuses. Marist and the Culinary Institute are right on the Hudson.
Jax, here is an explanation from Dutchess County history:
Dutchess County was not named after the Dutch, but as a compliment to the Duchess of York. Her title was derived from the French word, duchesse, and was spelled with a "t" until 1755, in which year Dr. Johnson, the English lexicographer, dropped the "t," and also the final "e."
Thank you!
Little things like that drive me crazy. I HAVE to know "why" all the time. TG for the internet!
Storms have gone by for now, we have only a flood watch here today. Heard on the news Tornado has hit in southern New Hampshire. Over 100 homes with damage trees down etc. Sorry I can't remember name of town and don't want to say the wrong place. I hope no one was injured. Bless them. Keep your heads down and your news on every one. Rain picking up here again , bye for now,
Celeste:
I can zoom my weather info right near your area. It looks like most of it will miss you, although you may have some heavy rains for a while. Dear friend, please check in when it is all over and let us know you are OK.
The majority of the strong weather is not in my area, thank goodness. Sherrie and Louise should be OK, too. And Peter. And Jack and Liza.
Temp 70.1°, Wind SSW 6.8, Rh 63%, Baro 29.79 steady. ☺
Just got hit by another thunderstorm, Severe weather warning here till midnight with scattered heavy rain, (1"- 2" /hr), & coastal flooding.
Well, I'm leaving for E. Hampton in a few minutes. Hope the roads aren't a disaster! I'm in a Miata with 2 doggies! Wish me luck!
We are under severe T-storms warnings and Tornado warnings. The wind has picked up and we are having major downpours. Will let you know when it's all over. Good luck to everyone in it's path and stay safe friends!!!
Celeste - hope somebody came home before the storms got to bad. What scary thing for a little kid to witness. Makes an impression.
You guys have me wondering where to look for rain barrels, now.
Steady, gentle rain. 72 humid degrees
We posted at the same time - Thinking of you!!!
Stay safe everyone!
All we have to worry about on this side of the state are floods ... again. I keep checking the radar over Celeste. It looks clear right now, but she has another band of storms headed her way.
I am terrified of tornadoes! Hope everyone is safe---we have relatives in NH, but in the Upper Valley--also stepson in ME, but on the coast, so we've not heard from any of them--hope that's a good sign! Intense thunder here last night (like Iris I couldn't sleep), pounding rain this morning, but some sun this pm--managed to get in a walk across the dam where there was a lovely breeze blowing.
It's pouring again here so expect more rain all evening up there I think. Lets up for a little while then comes down in buckets again. Good thing is there is no storm now, just heavy rain. I like this much better than all the gusty wind and big booms after lightening. Still under flood watch in my area too. Hope the worst is over up there and all are well. Several inches of liquid gold have fallen now, too much to measure any more.
Very nice right now. We did not get any more rain. Sun's been out for hours. Nice breeze. About 80 and 50% RH. Windows are open for a change.
I saw the biggest flash of lightning ever right outside my kitchen window with an immediate loud thundering crack. I jumped a mile. Another 3/4 inch today.
So you jumped a total of a mile and 3/4 inches? Seriously, that IS scary. Way too close for comfort.
Heehee.
Really, it looked like a great big ball of white. Never saw anything like it before. Don't know how close it actually was, but the following thunder was immediate.
I got a bit of rain, but nearly enough. Sounds like the northern NE is getting some seriously nasty stuff. Stay safe everyone!
Raining now, but at least the fireworks seem over. Napped this afternoon as not much sleep last night, with flashes & noise.
Hi everyone....still raining here but the worst seems to be over! Anyone heard from Sherrie? I wonder if she's in a part thats has downed wires. New Hampshire got the brunt of it, Tornado did some massive damage to a few area's. Here's a video:

Temp 72.3°, Rh 61%, Baro 29.82↑. ☺
Rains ended here around 5pm and the sun came out, the line of clouds heading out Eastward and clear skies to the West.
Haven't heard from Sherrie.
I did see that our state's storm destruction made the ABC evenig News, and that there was one fatality. A lady my age was killed when her home fell in on her. Her husband and an infant grand baby were taken to the hospital in the state capital. I haven't heard much on their condition.
Glad you are OK, Celeste!!
Glad your OK too Candyce! I hope Louise and Sherrie are alright too.
I'm glad that those of you north of me have come away unscathed. These were some ugly storms even if we needed the rain.
Temps are coming down and the humidity has really dropped in the Hudson Valley. Tomorrow is supposed to be just fine!
Wow - what a day here in NH!! No damage in my immediate area, just lots of heavy rain. But the tornadoes were far too close for comfort!
We have had almost 8 inches of rain since Tuesday - but no wind damage, thank-goodness. I feel bad for folks in NH - tornadoes so far north .. . . well, it's very frightening . . . .

Yes! We are supposed to have sun and lower humidity today! Dew point is supposed to drop into the 50s by this evening. Good thing too, 'cause DH and I are going to see "As You Like It" at an outdoor performance . . .
It sounds like you really were hit hard with the rain . . . I feel for ya.
Still overcast here, but the sun is coming. I know I was complaining about the drought but I didn’t order that kind of rain. Some of the big stuff is flopping over but not to much damage considering how hard we got pounded.
Dew was so heavy this morning it looked like frost on the tomato leaves.
It's a beautiful day in my neighborhood!! Yippee!!!
Current stats:
66° and clear, sunny skies
Wind: NW at 5 MPH
Humidity: 76% which is still a bit high
Dewpoint: 64°
Pressure: 30.09 in. and steady
I think I will enjoy today.
Temp 74.1°, Wind NW 5.0, Rh 51%, Baro 29.94↑. ☺
Mostly sunny here, clear to the West, cloud bank to the SE.
Gorgeous day today. Perfectly clear sky. 72 and lower humidity. Supposed to stay dry but will get up to about 88. Humidity back tomorrow though.
