She's About to....#7

(Cathy), MO

What are you using to spray with Linka Kay?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I am using Bayer bug spray. Just don't spray in the heat of the day. One of my brugs did not like that, and the leaves have a white residue on them. Others are OK. Seems to be doing Ok, Is someone using something better?
Linda Kay

(Cathy), MO

I had no idea what to get so I just got a spray bottle of liquid Sevin. And I'm very open to suggestions if anyone knows of some really good stuff! :-)

More brugs have been added to the brug co-op. Go take a look,
Linda Kay

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I was noticing gnawing going on on my brugs too... course most of them are setting on the bare ground, I need to pull them out and mulch and replace... I'm wondering if some of it isn't slugs (was going out with a flashlight last night, but I fizzled out early ) I was scanning for tomato worms (cats), too. I think there's more than one culprit. I've sprayed with Safer Insecticidal soap and now I'm getting out the "big jugs" with dish soap/peroxide/water to use in between the Safers. AND I'm getting very very inpatient with Maya, I need her to present a flush! This is the longest she's ever gone in the growing season without blooms... probably, because I uprooted her, whacked her old growth away (sent out cuttings from it) earlier this spring. This is the tallest I've seen her in the summer, tho, so when she does flush, I HOPE it's a doosey! I'm having trouble finding 20-20-20 fertilizer, has anyone bought any lately? I've checked the usual box places, maybe I need to try Ace's or a nursery...

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. I'm going to the chiropractor... no time to argue with myself.... I want mini's... (only new brugs AuntB can get, have to be mini's) I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. I don't need any more brugs. lol Thanks Linda Kay for keeping us informed, I did look at the list and she's offering some top notch brugs! Go Hotties!!! Clemen, I KNEW you were meeting a LADY, (but men are just as passionate about the brugs as we are). It's just fun to meet any DG'ers. Gotta go!

(Cathy), MO

The only places I have to choose from here are Walmarts and Sutherlands, and it seems like neither of them have much of a choice. My bottle is almost empty so I need to get something else soon.

Midwest City, OK(Zone 7b)

Good morning, the sun is shining and I'm off today. Yahooooo!!

DH got an appointment next week with the surgeon I requested, so that's alll good. Also, they have fixed him up to work in a supervisor's shop doing "one-handed" work. I don't know who was happier this morning, him going to work, or me seeing him going to work. Don't get me wrong, I love that man, but he is a worker and when he is not working, he is not happy!

Bonnie, Aunt B, pay attention here! Sisters, Bonnie originally sent me two Maya that were supposed to go to someone else. (This was before she found her marbles.) Oops! They arrived in 96+ degree heat in pretty bad shape and when I put them in water went totally mushy. I cried to Bonnie cause I just knew I had killed them. I was a brug murderer! So, she sent me more. Sure, makes sense. Let me kill two and then send me more to kill. I felt horrible. Well, I put those two mushy ones in a pot and kept them in my office window. No growth. This morning I decided, okay, I need that pot for something else. I pulled one of them out, ROOTS!! No leaves, no growth, but roots. Can you imagine how quickly I potted that one back up... LOL.. is there a 5 second rule on pulling up brugs??

Back to the posts on fertilizer and insecticides. I really have better luck finding what I need at our local Ace than at HD, Lowe's or WM. And they will order for me if they don't have it. Cat, do you need me to pick up something for you? I'll be happy to, just let me know!

Joyce (Happgarden) sent me the most beaufiful bird of paradise. So I am headed out to get it comfy.

I have got to go play... I need the therapy... Lov ya hotties. Have a good day. Peg

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL Peg on the 5 second rule! Too funny, I have been there done that with other plants. Bonnie, what is a mini, I am thinkin with my smaller yard and the amount of plants I have I am needin minis too!!! Variety names?

(Cathy), MO

Thanks Peg, but I don't know what to use anyway! LOL. So far the Sevin spray seems to be working ok. I just wondered what everyone else is using.

Lowes......how I wanted to be close to a Lowes back in May! I was looking for coneflowers and everyone said they had them. So, I scheduled a trip to an office up by KC and went to a Lowes during lunch. They had the cone flowers alright, but none of them were named! I came home and ordered some online!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

cat don't know if you still want cones but they are having a co op for the newest ones. I use sevin on most everything, but got some stuff for mites recently I am gonna try.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

AuntB - you crack me up. I don't need them either ... but who can live without more of them?? :)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Peg, I have a 2 month rule on ones I'm in tears over cause I think I lost them.. really! AND I told you, YOU didn't kill them... even if you weren't seeing roots now... Which is GRAND!! CONGRATS! I'm so happy for you... I want to tell you to get it outside for more warmth, but maybe you should leave it until you see growth above the soil.... but then the growth will probably drop when you move to outside.... hmmmm, Kims! Help us here! I'm so happy for you and DH... absence makes the heart grow fonder.. er keeps us sane! lol I'm glad they found something a one handed person could do.. and that will make his healing time so much shorter at home, too! ;) Cat, I'm staying with 20-20-20, I don't care who's brand. I don't have enough left to go around again and it's time.. I'll let you know what I come up with. I don't shop any of the boxes unless they are my last resort or they have stuff discounted. Customer Service is a thing of the past. I need to grab some food, I'm just starting to learn about the mini's.. There is Alex, single pink bloom about 6-8 inches, plant grows around 5ft..., Antique Lace, Gemini... Ludgers has a yellow to orange mini, and I still haven't found where to get my hands on some. I'm not totally sure the plants don't get big and it's just the bloom that is small, but there are probably all kinds... I didn't know about the mini blooms until 2 or 3 years ago... and I did get mind paws on an Alex. It bloomed in it's first blooms in my basement last winter.. here it is before it pinked up.

I will have to look at Walmarts and see if they have 20-20-20.

Hey does anyone know if there is a dark pink double?

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Wal*Mart usually has 20-20-20. They have just about anything.

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Cat - there are lots of dark pink doubles. See the threads titled, "Dola" and "Looking for a Southern Hardy Red Brug"

(Cathy), MO

Will do, thanks Amanda

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Walmart here, no. Their guy told me to buy the 10-10-10 and double it... I don't think it's the same... The tomato food and all purpose went to 28-16-18 or something like that and it isn't the same. These brugs (and hibiscus) have to have the "high octane" stuff, their piggies!

(Louise) Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

bonnie, I just found a cajun hibiscus on sale, it is a big plant in a five gallon pot. Lots of buds!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Ooooo Pretty, what color is it? (Louise, don't you have too many plants, now?) lol Girl, WHAT are you doing out shopping for more???? lol Hey, it was on sale, Hotties NEVER pass up a bargain, right?? Did the tag have a name? The Cajun Series by DuPont has different names for diffent colors.... check it out! (WARNING: Some pics may cause you to immediately place an order... this may be hazardous to your checking account) There is a 6 plant minimum, and they won't be big and bushy yet, but they are $10 ea. Okay, NOW check it out. www.dupontnursery.com/ProductCategory.aspx?pcid=%206 I wanted to chat more today, but as usual, my job got in the way! :) I'll check in later this evening..

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

That was a pretty ignorant suggestion, Aunt B! They don't educate their garden center associates like they did when I was one! We had to take hard tests, on everything from seeds to trees, and everything in between!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Lowes actually hires Master Gardeners. They approached our group for seasonal help, but I doubt they could pay enough to keep up with my purchases....LOL

Hotties, Hotties, I counted 21 buds on Monster White, not all the same size, but 21 buds! I can't wait.

I still have pink in bloom and the other AuntB said I had....LOL.

Work has been something else! Was suppose to be on vacation Thursday and Friday, maybe I will try for Monday since the rest didn't pan out. AuntB it is looking like rain. Who ever is North of us and ask if we had rain earlier in the week it was a big negative here. But I see a front coming in.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Had to post this. She is my sweetie.

Sorry the image was larger than I meant it to be.

Hi Hotties, been distant for a little bit, please excuse me! I was out all day with my mom, brought her here from the city and took her back, spent the whole day shopping and having fuin with her, she is 71.
Happgarden what a cutie you have over there! I bet you kiss her all day!
Anyway, my variagated brug is fully open and my Daturas are getting blooms, so happy. Here is the Devil's trumpet yesterday! Clemen

Well that is no fun! I have to work nights and miss all the hottie chatter. Joyce, she is the cutest ever! Hiya to all the hotties! I am off sat sun mon so will catch up more then. Bonnie I DO have too many plants but hey 11.88 for a huge cajun hibiscus! Well not sure what color this one is. There was another with a bloom, that is how I knew what it was. You cannot mistake a cajun hibiscus for anything else. I have drooled over his website for months. No names. Just says hibiscus. They have different leaves than the other Hibs too. The other one blooming was that browny creamy pink blend he is famous for. This one we will just have to wait and see. I bought other things too. Sweet kate spiderwort, two more hostas I didn't need (fragrant ones) Some pond plants, a new huge rose bush 50 percent off, a bougainvillea and a mandevilla for 3 bucks oh and the coolest begonia I have ever seen long skinny leaves and flowers like a fuschia, just not strong enough to resist those prices. It POURED here all night long! I think enough is enough, you can have too much of a good thing. My brugs seem supremely happy though. Just a couple holes in their leaves from the rain. Growing like weeds. My tallest one is now topping 17 inches. Talk to you all later. Hugs for the hotties!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh how beautigul. Do they smell like brugs?
So glad to hear you had a great time with your Mother. Enjoy those moments, they don't last forever...

My double yellow datura is about to...
It looks like it may be a triple, can't wait to find out.

double or triple???

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

The smell of the brugs in the evening is unbelieveable, but it is hard to stay outside because of the mosquitoes!

Rain this morning, my brugs are getting lots of holes in some of the leaves. I can't see anything in the evening, I am going to have to watch this weekend.

Bonnie, I think you gave me a start of a hibiscus when we met to go shopping. It has multi colored leaf, was that you? I don't know what is happening to my plant tags but they are disapprearing. I stopped using tongue depressers because the bassett hound loved to chew on them. I wonder if he has decided the same thing about the plastic ones.

I still have plants I have not planted from early spring. I shouldn't rat myself out! LOL. I keep saying I am not buying anymore until everything is planted but.....

lavender4ever I understand completely, you can't let those darling plants be discounted and not take them home to a loving place...LOL

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Kim, I stll have your bp, and will mail on Monday.
When I took it to the po it peed all over my foot....LOL so I had to leave, I got the papertowels a little too wet! Anyway it is doing fine and will ship out on Monday.

Glad everyone else got theres are they shipped ok. If any of you have problems with them just let me know.

(Cathy), MO

Good morning all. I'm off today & getting ready to ehad outside. No rain here Joyce! :-( I was hoping it would come on south too. We need it bad. Oh well, maybe later in the day. Have a good day everyone

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Lavender, pics of the hibs, please... I have a Cherry Cola (not a cajun) it is brown with a bright red center.. and I didn't even like the brown hibs.... I love it now, such a nice contrast to all the pinks, reds, oranges and yellows. Wow, I went to lowes over lunch hour this week, no bargains on much of anything, except the brown crispy stuff... I confess Joyce, I still have stuff not planted or potted either. Some herbs and live forevers... I think at this point I'll pot them up a size bigger and sink in the ground for winter protection and plant out next spring. I've done hosta like that and they did great. My nice BP you sent is doing great, I sat it between some big potted nanners and canna and it looks like part of the family, now. ((((Joyce)))) Clemen we missed you, but I think we understand we all get busy with our personal lives out-side of plants. How nice to spend a whole day with your mama. Your little devil is gorgeous. I just got some from another one of our precious Hotties, and I sure hope I get to see some blooms before the end of the season. Taters, I think yours IS a TRIPLE!!! How exciting!
It's raining here today, had to move to the front porch for coffee this a.m. We needed a little rain, I was going to shower the brugs and hibs with the hose tomorrow, if it hadn't rained... I think it helps deter any little spider mites that might think they're moving in for an attack. Joyce, I know what you mean about the skeeters, they are awful this year. I got a package yesterday so I was out there taking care of things late in the evening last night. Mel and I sprayed ourselves with some Avon stuff and it did help a lot, but I really hate to hear them flying around my head. I don't think I gave you a hib start, I do have a variegated one, I got from Crystalnurse (I think) 2 or 3 years ago. I did give you a few cuttings from Swiss Cheese Philo... speaking of... my poor house plants sure suffer this time of year, I've neglected to water them regularly, but they are being troopers.. I did lose a variegated gold fish plant, but I can find those later at Lowe's if I want to replace it. (shame on AuntB, she's beyond hope on the subject of plants) Old mini blinds work great for name tags, cheap and you can cut them any length you need. I didn't think Bassett hounds liked plastic. Who's getting 3 days in a row to play in their flowers??? Lucky YOU! Enjoy and we'll hope for pleasant weather for you.

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Happ, go out about midnight and look on your brug leaves. Sounds like snails, or slugs. I have had a terrible time with them! I got some snail bait yesterday at Wal*Mart and I didn't see any last night. I think i have an infestation. This stuff will kill them, they like it! They can strip a brug in just a few nights.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Mornin Hottie Sis's!!

Lavender.. WTG!!... I just can't pass by a good bargain wothout bringing it home with me!!
OH JOYCE... your lil babe is precious!!!!... I only have 1 GD.. and 3 GB... but my GD was born with cleft lip and palate.. and I think some sort of brain damage... never was a cuddler... oh how i'd like to borrow a lil baby for a bit.. BTW..... I got the BP this morning!!! My DH said... who's sending you roses!!..lol.. I said this is better than ROSES!! TY so MUCH!!
CLEMIE... sooo glad you had a day with your MOMMA... even though I go see my Momma.. it is not like it used to be.. PLEASE... spend as much time with her as you can... Mine has Alzheimers.. and has always been my best friend!!
Linda..... pretty bloom..I bet she smells great...
Cat.. I am with you..lol no rain here and everything is parched!! I bought some soaker hoses and I am going to at least get them situated so I can use them.. seems like 1/3 of my day.. every other day that is.. I am watering.. and to me that is a precious WASTE of my time when I can let something else do it for me!!lol
Bonnie... you and Joyce are not the only ones with potted plants sitting around!!.. hehe AND.. get to know your lil cashier at Lowes!! Ask her what plants they have on clearance.. or if they would discount a plant that is looking kinda sick.. etc. THAT is how I am getting plants for 5-10-25-50 CENTS!!! I have been back 2x this past week and she hasn't been there.. just some ol grouch.!..I am wanting some trellis and they are real pretty... with the circle in the middle.. but they are rusting.. so that means I will have to primer and repaint before I can use them.. sooo I am wanting a real good deal..lol
Peg...... hope all is well with you and DH!!
Where's Kim... and Kimbob??? huh?????

TTYL... Hottie Sis's!!

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, ladies, the snail bait works! I just counted 19 dead and 2 shells, on one side of the walk! I'll check the other side asap!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh my gosh, Audrey. You are winning the battle! I keep inspecting. The damage is more on the topward leaves and roundish holes, not like a munching from the edge of the leaves... Why would they "slime" to the top when there are so many leaves just as delicious at the bottom? I'll be working on muLching (not munching) and playing with brugs this weekend and I can stay up later and go slug huntin. Me and the brugs, a midnight date in the moonlight! How romantic! lol (unless it's storming) It's very sauna-like and cloudy this afternoon. Audrey whaddya find on the other side? Are they big or little?

(Audrey) Dyersburg, TN(Zone 7a)

Nothing yet, on the other side! I think they all got together and went for a picnic over there! They were all small slugs. Babies, I'd say! I have a few tiny holes in my leaves, too. I've seen some fast little critters that look sorta like a grasshopper, but they're to small! Also a tiny dark something I'm not familiar with! Guess I'll have to find a bug spray, or powder!
