My Mexican Hydrangea started blooming this week! This is a new plant for me this year. Have it in a pot to keep it from spreading like crazy.
Sizzling Hot July Blooms-pg. 2
Thanks for the new thread... Your Mexican hydrangea is so pretty. How unusual. Please tell me how it spreads? Seeds or roots or?
Pod, it spreads by underground roots. Kinda like tall Mex. petunias. I have it in a pot that is sitting on two bricks on my concrete patio. If you let the thing touch ground, it will root. I got this one as a cutting, so I don't know if it'll grow from seed or not.
I haven't had success with dividing blackfoot daisy, but if you let it go to seed you will have some new plants that you can transplant early in the season.Love your blooms. I am also curious about the mex hygrangea.Sun or shade and how tall.
I have mine in mostly full sun. It does get a bit of afternoon shade, but most of the day it's out there in the heat. Not sure how tall it gets.
Here's the info from Plant Files http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1253/
Aha! That name I recognize ~ Cashmere Bouquet... how would you describe the fragrance?
It pays to do research. Smart idea to keep it in a pot.
Pod- I grow this plant also called native hydrangea-Cshmere Bouquet. It smells rather odd maybe like the name CB. I planted it in a shady area and it sent roots out maybe 6 feet to a sunnier area. Some of the plants are now about 5-6 foot tall. This may be a good plant for semi-shade in the edge of the woods but blooms best with more sun. Easy to transplant but for me slow to take off. I moved some to wooded edge area this spring and it has stayed about 2 foot without blooming yet. I hope it will spread and take the area by next year.
Hope you have been lucky with the rain. We only got a quarter of an inch and really need more as it is really dry.

Hi Dde, I've missed seeing you post and was hoping your garden was keeping you busy...
No on the rain here... 8 ( but of course I am still adding plants like I have good sense.
I had heard mixed reviews on the fragrance and was wondering.
Kim, the Blackfoot daisy doesn't divide because it is actually like a little woody shrub, but when you cut it back you can propagate by cuttings, it is relatively easy, also from seed, but I prefer the cuttings.

I lurk around a lot but have been busy with the first ever RU in this area. Had potted up and cared for lots of plants to trade. Now have all the goodies that I have to plant out. It is so hot and dry that I may just keep potted up in what I call ICU area until fall.
That fragrance of CB is really a love/hate odor. You have to rub the leaves to really get a whif of it so not a problem even if you are on the hate end of the smell.
When we last posted we both were working on a new edge of the woods shade area. How is yours going. Mine is doing fair for the just planted stage. Not getting the blooms I expected yet. While planting I began to hit rocks in areas so got obsessive and made a rock path through it about 100 foot long. Did get Bear's britches started and it is doing fair. Hope it becomes as invasive as they say. It is in a area that is difficult to get watered so things will just make it or not.
Will try to stay current on here now now that RU is over.

Great Photos!
What camera do you use?
Emma
I have an Olympus c-760...it has a 10X optical zoom and a good macro feature. I bet they've got better versions now, mine is kinda old.
pod, love the pink celosia and pink butterfly. Last year my garden was overcome with butterfly. This year I have even more lures and nothing. Not even the gulf frutilery (sp). They usually just strip the passe and this time...nothing. Did have an overabundance of white moth that destroyed half of the vegetable garden. Have even had the lunar moth for the last 3 years. Today, nothing.
Have I said "nothing"?
Dde ~ glad to hear the RU was a smashing success. I followed a bit of it. Sounded like a wonderful location and a nice day was had by all.
Glad to hear your edge of the woods is getting established. Mine is, well, it's still the edge of the woods. I have cleared, cut some small trees and still have one dead pine that needs to come down. As a result, I've been watching the sunlight (or lack of) and picking up a potential plant or two to add to it when ready. I still have that row of Aspidistra to dig up. Am thinking I don't want to replant it all, the roots are thicker than thieves. Anyway, I've not been known to make any rash moves ~ LOL It will be there when I get one of those "roundtuits"! 8 ) Happy you are making some lurking time and look forward to your posts! pod
Thanks blue_eyes . . .
Awesome photos!

The RU was a fun time and a first for me. Met lots of nice folks and got some goodies. We have plans for a fall one in maybe October but a date has not been picked yet. Wish you could make it.
My new "hidden" garden area is coming along. It is in an area that is difficult to water so things have to make it on their on after a drink at planting time. I mainly just moved things that needed thinning and heavy reseeders. Probobly need/needed to take out a few more trees for sun as I am not getting many blooms on some things. I planted in waves of flowers with the hope of making a big splash that could be seen from a distance. We will see what the results will be this fall as some are fall bloomers. Part is heavier shade and other part is part sun. Many of the things came from an area that I cleared out to make another bed. I am happy with this new bed that is tropicals- hibiscus, EE's and gingers. They are doing well with the heat and water I am giving them. Will try to post photos soon.
Hang in there and let me know if you need things for your new edge of the woods area.
