Daily Pics Vol. 124

jo11, I thought about that later that day, although it was near 100 and around 5pm when I saw it. It opened it's eyes after a minute, turned a little and then shut them again. After a little bit longer it woke up and flew off.

Thanks for the tip on cleaning! It's a huge battle once it gets going. I had it where I could spray it with a sharp stream and it would come off but it got thicker. So letting it dry out is not good? I take the top off, scrub it, spray it and let the sun bake it for a while. Maybe that's not helping my situation? I get red and green algae in my cement bird bath too. I'd try bleach but don't want it getting in my beds.

One thing that does work, but not long in my heat, is putting about 5 bright copper pennies in it.

Here's my grumpy looking baby Barn Swallow.

This evening I went down to the Coastal Trail looking for shore birds. Not a very high tide this evening. Most of the shore birds were at least a half a mile out on the mud flats. This Redpoll was in the bushes along the edge of the trail.

Some of you know that I have been trying to get a shot of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo...I had given up hope of finding one and lo and behold I heard this one across the field in a tree. I wasn't sure what it was until I looked into my viewfinder.

Margaret,
Australia's Swamp hen (Porphyrio Porphyrio) looks almost identical to the Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) This is a scan of an old Common Moorhen photo, I took it in Florida, 1984.

Quoting:
Australia's Swamp hen (Porphyrio Porphyrio) looks almost identical to the Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus)

Except being about 3 sizes larger! Moorhen ~300g, Swamphen ~1kg, a big bruiser of a bird twice the size of a Coot. Australia also has Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa), which is very similar to our Moorhen (sometimes even treated as conspecific).

Resin,
Thanks for the information. I never would have guessed there was such a large difference in size.

Nice pics everyone! Dell, I recently got a pic of a yellow-billed cuckoo and they are hard to get. I'm very envious of the blue jay pics, too. We don't have many of those where I ive. I too have some comical cardinal pictures, dell. I would love to post my pics here but haven't had any luck getting them to upload. I'll just enjoy everyone else's until I can figure it out! I may need to resize them all

He has just discovered the thrill of birding and it's so much fun to watch his excitement! He's 11. We went out today and saw warblers and nuthatches, then got to a field on the same road and saw bobolinks and sparrows and goldfinches in the field. I took this bad pic of the bobolinks but I'm confused about these yellow ones-they don't look like females. Are they juvies?

Crazybirdlady, I never resize my big pics cause the software does it when I download em here.
