Daily Pics Vol. 124

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Wow! Vol. 124 already...that is so amazing!

I like to get pics of unusual combinations of birds. However, they have been few and far between lately. But these 2 showed up at the same time, and it was a very striking combination to say the least! DH is calling me for dinner so gotta go!

Nice pics nanny! Thanks for starting the new thread!

GM, Lovely shots of the fledgling Carolina Wren (last vol.)!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Sorry I had to jump ship there and not get a real proper start here!

We had a new visitor to the yard today. DH called me to the window to see if this was a female Cardinal. I really am trying with him!!!!

So even though her better half has visited upon occassion, this was the first...as far as we know... for the female Eastern Towhee! The pics are not great as at this time of day is bad for shots out this window.

Crows at the wildlife hospital.

They are nearly ready for release. They were whimpering when I went in to feed them. I thought they were hungry, but they didn't touch the food. I don't know what they were trying to communicate. Beautiful birds.

And lastly, this little guy is being released back into the wild tomorrow. Wish him/her well.

Oh, what is that last little guy? He's beautiful! I believe this is a female House Finch and she seems to have had a really rough day. The heat is exhausting. I went to wash the window and she never moved from her spot on the bubbling water fountain. When I realized she was asleep I ran for the camera.

btw, can anyone tell me how to keep the algea off my fountain? It's a beating trying to clean it. I scrub it and let it dry in the sun but it only helps for a few days.

Wonderful pics Nanny of the swallows and orioles. Cowbird probably doesn't know he's a cowbird. Wonder who raised him?

Thanks Resin. I thought everyone could read my mind through the web! I hope they do well back where they belong, in the wild.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

The Chipping Sparrows around here have been hit really hard raising cowbirds this year. Last year it was the cardinals. Have seen a couple with the doves.

Blue Jay - when I saw this pic Peter Pan popped in my head!!

Thanks for the new thread Nanny and everyone else for all the great pics on this and the previous thread!

I am still playing catch up on my pics...I hope I am not repeating any. All my pics lately have been from the yard, too hot most of the time to wander to the woods...and besides the bugs and skeeters are just waiting for something to eat!!

Here is a Robin,

Beautiful pics! I'm starting to see a number of Cowbirds here too but it looks like the Starlings are beginning to decrease. :-)

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Yes Pelle, the Starlings here have disappeared since spring! I know they are still around as I see them in town but none at all around here...the Cowbirds and House Sparrows are another story. The Grackles seem to have declined in number also and we hardly ever see or hear any Crows.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

We still have a lot of cowbirds and this year the HOSP population seemed to be up so. I know I will not be doing a BB nesting box next year.

I love your feeder pic Rose!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Such beautiful colors!! I apparently inherited all the Starlings. They just appeared out of nowhere this week. They had a ball in the water fountain! I can't help but feel sorry for any bird in our heat and drought. This one tried to kill a piece of plastic for a while. ha

Great shots everybody!

Rose, wonderful pics of the Indigo Bunting! We have them in our yard, as we do every year, but haven't been able to get any pics of them yet. DH and I love hearing the male sing his sweet little heart out during the day!

konkreteblond--
Unfortunately, the algae is kind of a constant battle when it gets really warm. I clean mine with a brush and sometimes use those clorox wipes. Then I swish around the water really well to clear the algae/clorox wipe stuff out. I don't let mine dry so that cuts down on the production. Once it is algae free, I fill it right back up again.

I am wondering if the sleeping bird you have is ill. The birds in my yard tend to close their eyes and stay in one place they feel comfortable -- a feeder or birdbath -- when they are really sick.
