Night Owls

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Anyone else want more posts at night? I'm not quite ready to go to bed, but there is nothing left to read.

(Zone 7a)

I wish I'd seen this sooner. I stay up until all hours, too. This is EARLY for me. LOL

I see you like sci-fi and movies and such. Me, too.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I used to stay up later. Now I have three kids, one mine, that I watch from about 7:30, but I'm on here all day so I have something to do and towards the end of the day I have no energy to do anything else, but there are no post on here to look at.

I'm not reading fiction right now, gardening and leather working books have taken over for the moment, or I'd exchange reading list.

(Zone 7a)

Let me know when you're ready. I have lots.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It goes in cycles. My most recent fiction reading was Charles De Lint, he's urban fantasy. I have the Baroque Series by Neal Stephenson to read, but that takes investment that I haven't been up for yet.

My favorite strict Sci Fi writer is probably Mike Resnick.

(Zone 7a)

My recent reading is the ones by Michael Crichton. I'm reading Next right now.

I haven't read those you posted. I'll find them.

Also, movies I've recently seen are the ones out of China. The scary monster ones. The Host and The Eye were pretty good.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We've watched a bunch of different stuff recently, but it was mostly things we'd seen before. I think Night in the Museum was the last new movie I saw and liked. But, that's more child level. We watched Land of the Dead night before last, which I really like.

(Zone 7a)

I liked LOTD, too.

There's a writer I discovered lately that is really interesting. James Rollins. Sort of like the Lincoln/Child collaborations.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Haven't heard of him. I'll take a look.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Looks a little too horror for my tastes.

(Zone 7a)

There's other things I like, too. Not horror.

Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, Frank Herbert's Dune, C. J. Cheryh's books. Her Fortress Series was awesome. Joan D. Vinge has some very good ones.

My personal very favorite book series of all time...The Dragon Riders by Anne McCaffrey. There is, I think, 20 or so books.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I've read Foundation and Dune, both very good. I keep being told to read C. J. Cheryh and Anne McCaffrey, but for some reason I never get around to it. Joan D. Vinge I haven't heard of.

I'm a big Mercedes Lackey fan. Her writing isn't great at times, but she's a great story teller; my #1 choice for brain Styrofoam.

(Zone 7a)

Mercedes does tell a good story. Give Anne a try first. You'll be hooked in no time. LOL I got my hubby sucked in.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm sure I would be, it just never works out. I don't have her books when I'm in the mood, when I do have her books I'm reading something else, that type thing.

(Zone 7a)

Ah...understood. I have lots of books that happens to.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Andre Norton is another one of those.

(Zone 7a)

Love her, too. Another is Orson Scott Card. His Ender's Game was a page-turner.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Ender's game is classic, I think there's one in the series I haven't gotten abound to yet. The first one's by far the best, but the others are worth reading.

(Zone 7a)

I picked one up at an airport once that was pretty good, too. I'll have to dig that one out. Can't remember the author or title...

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

lol... I have a few of those.

(Zone 7a)

It's going to make me crazy...BRB

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I have all the fiction books I own on an Excel list. I keep them in boxes right now... I need more bookshelves, but then I'll just fill those up to.

(Zone 7a)

There are never enough bookshelves. LOL

Okay, I found the book...Marc Scott Zicree, Magic Time. It's about a government accident of some kind that starts changing people into other things. Some don't change and others become demons or faery-like creatures. Some have magic powers. Our hero's sister becomes one of the faery-things and is kidnappedd by a demon. The rest of the book and the two that follow are his and his companions journey to find his sister and find out what happened. It's very intriguing.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Sound like Wild Card series. Could be interesting.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Once again I'm up way too late and nothing is going on.... sigh... but then I got on at 8 am and now it's 1 am so I've been up too long.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Haven't heard from you in awhile. What's up on your end?

(Zone 7a)

You were still up way too late? Did you ever get to sleep?

I've been busy getting stuff done around here. Weeding, watering, working...the 3 Ws for the summer.

I was wakened at 7ish this morning by what felt like an earthquake. It was very weird.

I had insomnia and no sleeping pills. I also managed to make myself sick about 3 am. I got to sleep about 5:30, but was able to sleep in till about 12:30. I'm so glad that it happened on a Friday. I don't even want to think about taking care of 3 kids on no sleep. I guess actually my DH was going to get up and watch them. He didn't realize it was Saturday and offered to do it.

(Zone 7a)

Sorry you were sick. Are you better now?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Yeah I think I just worked myself into a tizzy. It might have been the mixture of beer and benedryl. Either way I'm feeling also fine today. I went out and picked up a bunch of plants and got them planted. I also got some local wildflower honey, I'm hoping that will help with my allergies and picked up a house for the 3Bs swap.

(Zone 7a)

Yuck! Glad you're better. Reading anything fun? I'm reading a history of Chinese myths. It's interesting. I just finished one on Japanese myths.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I ended up rereading the Diana Gabaldon books. They're almost romance novels, but about 800 pg. a piece and I enjoy them.

(Zone 7a)

I haven't read any of hers. Which ones do yo uhave? I just looked her up and she has a few.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

The Outlander series is the one I've read. Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager. There are two more that I haven't read but that I have from the library.

(Zone 7a)

Okay, I'll try those, too.

Have you read any Roger Zelazny? His Amber series?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Years ago...

(Zone 7a)

Still up?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

For the moment, need to head to bed but haven't yet. I hate having to be up at 7am.

(Zone 7a)

Ooooo, that sucks. Sorry. I just saw you on another thread saying you do day-care. That's a lot of hours to be working. My daughter would LOVE that job. She had to have her only baby adopted by another family. Can't have any more. Right now she's taking care of her boyfriends two and working full-time. She works as an inspector on oilrigs. Loooong hours there.

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I like the job because it allows me to stay home with DSD and to spend a good amount of my time doing things I like. I don't like having to get up at 7am and I don't like having no personal time, but that's just summer; I'd still have DSD from the time I wake up till almost when I go to bed, even if I wasn't watching other kids. We just started enforcing bed time again to start working back to school hours. But I had a 23 mo. old till after 10pm tonight and they take more energy then the older kids. I love him dearly, he's like a nephew, but I'll be happy when he gets older.
