New MG's for me 2008 #2

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - Nice to wake up in the morning to see all those lovelies, isn't it!? :-) Really pretty flowers today!

This one is a knock-out! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5246145 I would love a few seeds of it for a trade! (Hint, hint!)

Gautier, MS

Hi Becky, yes it is. Didn't even wait for my coffee to get done!!

I'm tagging those & will be saving seeds hoping there's lots to come. Funny I got those from the Parks seeds.

Plum Surprise bloomed too today, couldn't download all my pic's at one time, too many I guess so had to delete old one from my folder.

If you have a DVD on your computer, you can download your photos straight to a DVD disk instead of your hard drive - at least that is what I do.

If you are taking orders, Helena ... add some Plum Surprise seeds to my wish list too! LOL! All of them are really lovely! Parks seeds, huh? I have heard others here on this forum mention that every once and while they get something unusual from the commercial Parks MG packages. Very cool to get such a wonderful surprise! That's the REAL beauty of MGs ... you never know what you are going to get until they bloom! Always fun to see the daily blooms!!!

Hey Becky, I love good surprises!! I need to learn to hand polinate
b/c so far I only see one seed pod on Plum Surprise. It's been slow to flower & produce seed.

Hi Emma, I think I'll have seeds of all the ones you want except for the Plum Surprise might take longer to collect seeds. I'm glad that we still have plenty of a growing season left. I'll be glad to share with whatever I have.

Helena - I use a small fine paint brush to pollinate my blooms. I just lightly brush the inside of the MG where the stamen and the anthers are and then check to see if I see tiny white specks on the brush. If so, then I lightly "dust" inside other blooms that I want to pollinate. I have had some vines that produced very little pollen and had to cross it with pollen from another vine bloom. Ipomoea nils cross with other I. nils very easily for me. All the others can be a bit tricky. I. purpurea crosses easily with other I. purpurea too. Just don't take hand-pollinating too seriously because it will take all the fun out of it! :-) I know some people will tie the buds before blooming to really be sure. I don't have the time and patience for that. I figure if it works ... great! If not, oh well, I tried. LOL! I am strictly here to enjoy my plants, not get all stressed out about them. So have fun and enjoy them! Yours are beautiful and should be enjoyed even if for the moment! :-)

Helena, I would love some of your Gray Star and Plum Surprise seeds if you have any extras. I'm sure I can find something to tempt you with!!

Still waiting for the first MG blooms here.

Is anyone growing the white Hige seeds I sent out last fall? I would love to see some pictures.

Deb

Thanks Becky for the info. I'm going to try it. I am enjoying all the blooms.

Oh Helena, I just can't get enough of all these lovelies.... especially the last one you posted.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - Truly beautiful!!! Does that last one have variegated leaves? Just wondering.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Momcat, Elsa & Becky. Becky, yes it does have variegated leaves even though the first ones were solid. To me it looks like MT. Fuji with something else? What do you think?

Helena, gorgeous, bold colors

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Helena - This one: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5251078
looks like it is mostly Fuji no Beni :
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/139459/
and it would have variegated leaves, too.

You have some really lovely blooms right now. Are you fertilizing them with Bloom Booster and Fish Emulsion? If not, I would. It will help promote lots of blooms on each vine!

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Helena - What time of day did you take this photo here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/helenahkh_1215954995_610.jpg

if this is what the color looks like most of the morning it may be a cross or a mutation of Fuji no Murasaki that is showing mostly the reddish pigmentation and little of the blue / violet...

Interesting in either case...

TTY,...

Hi Ron,

I took the picture early in the morning maybe 7 something. That was the first bloom, today's bloom had more blue.

I. hederifolia "pumpkin" must have crossed with the red one. I hope not all of them. I did want a orange one.

More Fireworks on Plum Surprise but the seed pods are not forming and falling off.

Becky, I do fertilize with fish emulsion on the ones in pots but to tell you the trueth I'm afraid to on the ones in the ground b/c of the mole that I had in my yard. I'm afraid it will come back & destroy my plants so I just been giving the bloom booster.

Last repeat I think, gray star.

Helena, your Gray Star is absolutely out of this world!

Chewelah, WA(Zone 5a)

Where did you get your seeds for the Gray Star and Plum Surprise? They really are lovely.

Gautier, MS

Thanks Elsa and woofie, I got the Plum Surprise seed from Emma in gift mix that she sent me.

The gray star I'm not positive but I had another stunning gray mg last year that only produced a seed or two so I think it was from that one. It was also from a trade that probably originated from one of Emma's seed. I just happened to luck out again. But the plant was a weak one with beautiful gray flowers. I have 4 blooms on the gray star today so I think it'll be producing more seeds.

This was that bloom last year.

Is it possible that it crossed with this one last year to produce the gray star???

Velvet Plum is stunning. Great pics too.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

You really have some awesome looking blooms there Helena!

What are the temps during the day there?

Gautier, MS

Thanks Woofie, Jackie and Becky. The temps have been in their mid to high 90's in the afternoon, I think. I was up before 6:30 am taking pic's. Yesterday & today felt very nice that early but it feels way too hot after noon. The rain has missed my area here so all my plants are needing to be watered badly & daily. I planted my fav. in the ground yesterday so hopefully they'll do better. Oh, I already started more mg's again. I'm hooked badly on them now!!
