Rock Wall Construction

DH only played with 1 -1/2 ton of the red rock.

that rock looks nice! Is that the stone you were talking about or is he using crushed stone for beds instead of mulch? A little confused.

Its the same rock that he has been useing since last year. 75 bucks a ton - delivered. The plants will be planted and the bark on the top. He just does it different then you bill. You make walls and he makes beds.

Looking great, Sherrie. Have fun filling them.

Pretty Sherrie!

Sherrie, nice shape on that first bed in the corner. What are you planting?

I would love buy some stone here, but it is now way to expensive to even consider. More for the trucking and the steamship charges than for the stone. When we built the house in 1981 we brought over a big truck load. I don't remember the price, but it was a good price and, as we didn't pay a middle man, it was affordable. The mason used all the good ones for the terraces and the entry walk and some stairs plus a small wall we had him build. We filled the truck intentionally with much more stones than he needed, so as to give him a choice of stones to cut and lay. The ones he didn't like or didn't need were the ones that DH and I have used over the years to create all our paths. We never did the proper initial work of leveling and laying down sand, so they are a little lumpy and not well done, but done. We have now exhausted our precious pile, so no more paths to build. But we always have some reworking to do ever few years to keep them looking good and as level as possible. They won't be good if and when I am old and unsteady.

Wha, I missed your pyramid. Too much to take in at once. I'll catch it on my next visit. How about a Mayan temple? Maybe a stepped pyramid like in Tikal. You could sit on top with your beer and view your pond life. Patti

Good grief - I have much to plant and dont know what corner or bed to start in. The 1st thing is to get the veggie garden completed or at least almost. My goal is 100 tomatoe plants and I am at 42. Then peppers of every kind and shape.

I have to complete the #1 bed of flowers and do the one next to the little shed. The corner one will be the last as DH has not ran water down there yet. He will have to T-off from the 1st bed.

I am confusing myself!

100 t.plants? I am amazed. That is a lot of maters! Patti

My 3rd year on the large garden. 1st year 91 tomats and last year 54. I was not happy with a lesser amount.

To add: I can. This year I hope to expand doing relishes, beets and of course tomatoes. I want to do spaghetti sauce and other stuff.

We bought a freezer last winter just for doing what I do. We do have the space. Actually space with nothing in it. Number 1 for me is the veggie garden as it is where I got started 5 years ago. Flowers I am trying to learn but its not as easy as weeding a tomatoe!

Nice, Bill. One bad toss of the horsehoe and a hosta is flattened.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

and last shot - i tore this wall down to make it wider and taller so you would not have to bend over to pick up a 12 oz. beverage and possibly hurt your back:) see this example

that would have to be a REAL bad toss - there have been run away shoes make it into the garden.

You've never seen me play ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You get tossed from the garden if you hit the beer.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

can't wait to fill those hanging baskets... I am behind this year... and will be glad to finally attempt to fix the one spot that has been bugging me for years... under that fabric 1/2 of the area is gravel for the drains... couldn't stand looking at it

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

love to see it when he finishes -

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

will do... just hope the drains still work after all this...:::::crossing fingers:::::

Jen, I think he makes walls in his sleep, that's his secret.

Could be.

our i have rocks in my head?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Clearly.

When friends visit my place sooner or later they spot a pile of blue/gray aged limestone and ask what I am going to do with them. I tell them I am scientifically ageing them with full intent to keep them in my mental plan for the hardscape. The chippies protect me cause I just could not move that pile and upset their plans to rule the world. If you have chip and dale they may have genetics moved away from my rock pile. That's my way of proving the great value of a pile of unused rock.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

chip and dale have been asked to leave my property - it is now rare to see them:)

thx doc:)

spent saturday tearing down and repairing the other side of the front walkway wall

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

and last shot - i only rebuilt this a few more feet to the right as i need to wait until after the astible's that are there bloom or they will be buried in dirt as i am removing all the stones and rebuilding so that it leans into the bed - the hydrangea did loss several branches and blooms - at least whoever built this used heavy granite boulders that are relatively flat to shore up this retaining wall.

love it.
