Asking for permission....

Granite City, IL(Zone 6a)

(I forgot to mention when posting my question that if I ever actually DO sell any art I make with your photos (with your permission) that I’d be happy to send you a free high res. copy of that art for you to keep. You only need to let me know you’d want me to do that.) ;o)

Hello all,

I’m fairly new to DG’s and am really enjoying the time I spend here. It’s really a lot of fun and very informative too! One of my other hobbies besides gardening is digital art. I love taking a really good photos (high res) and working with it in my various digital software programs, turning them into ‘art’ works. With permission from the web site I’m posting on most forums (those I have access to) and asking for if I may use the photos posted in those forums. There are so many really wonderful photos and I would greatly love to be able to turn them into art.

For any of you that grant me this permission I can assure you that if I use one of your photos I will be more than happy to include you as the photos original owner on any finished work. I’ve been saying for years now that someday I’d like to actually try and sell my art work but as yet I haven’t even tried. I would like to some day. But for now I just basically play around with them and see what I come up with.

So if you don’t care if I copy/use your photos please just let me know in this post. And ‘thank you’ in advance to whom ever gives me their kind permission!

God Bless,
GrammyJo ;o)

I could care less, as a matter of fact I changed my settings for DG a few months ago so the copyright stuff does not show up. Mine are mostly taken with my phone though, but a few have been taken with a digital camera (borrowed from my neighbor).

Here have a maypop.

You guys are ALL so very sweet! You all gave me the 'giggles'. LOL

I neglected to add in my permission post that if I ever actually use your photo(s) and SELL what I make with them I'd be more than happy to send you a free high res. copy of that work. Just let me know if you'd like me to do that and I'll make sure to add that to my permission 'list' that I'm keeping. And I'm assuming that each of you has given me permission to use any of your posted photos, right? I just want to be SURE.

Thank you again. I think you're all very kind and generous. You may also use any photos I may post in the future. So far that's only one and it's not the greatest (of a Cedar Waxwing). I had to do a lot of ‘corrective work’ to get it looking decent. But you're welcome to use it (and them).

God Bless,
Grammy Jo

Grammy, you may use anything I post, and I would definetly like a copy of it.
My pictures may not be the quality you are looking for, but the subjects of my pictures are high quality--I think--lol

You can use any that I post. I would like a copy should you use any.

Thanks,

You can use mine too, and I would love a copy!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

You may use any photos I post. Here is a photo that I've never posted before, but I really like it. Are you just using flower photos, or other subjects too?

Wow, shebs45--that's a gorgeous picture!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks, it was taken at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. This was a wild bird, but apparently was used to people. A bunch of people were able to get as close as about 10 feet away from him. He just stood there preening nonchantly while everybody snapped pictures.

Granite City, IL(Zone 6a)

slcdms, THANK YOU! Are the photos you post all yours or might any of them be off the web? This is important so that I know I’m NOT infringing on any copyrights (suggested by a fellow Dave’s Garden fan). And I certainly will send you a copy should I use one of yours. ;o)

glendalekid, THANK YOU also! Again, I have to be SURE that ANY photo I might use that you’ve posted is actually yours and not one from the web for the same reason I gave slcdms. And of course you also will get a copy of anything I might use of yours. ;o)

jlp222....Same ‘thank you’ to you TOO. And will you let me know if any photo(s) you might post are solely yours also? (You’ll get a copy of anything I might create with yours too ;o)

shebs45, how COOL!! No, I certainly do NOT just use flowers! I'll work with literally anything from a shoe to an ant! LOL What a great photo of a Great Blue. Did you take it? They normally fly away as soon as I get close enough for a really decent photo. Thank you so much. (When I work with it, should I actually do so I’ll send you a copy ;o)
PS Hmm…..you already answered my question when you explained to NatureLover about it. REALLY nice photo. See, that’s what I meant when I asked my original ‘permission question’ about my not ever getting to so many places that others will make it to. I HAVE been to Chicago but it was a gazillion years ago and it’s NOT very likely that I’ll never be up that way again.

LOL shebs45, guess he views himself as a celebrity.

I take that back -- I did recently put a link to a passion flower in a D-mail. My passion flower is blooming, and I MISSED getting a photo, but I wanted the person I sent the D-mail to to see what kind I have.. But it bloomed some more so now I have my own photos.

Yes, all of my pictures are solely mine.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi GrammyJo,

I personally took the pic of the heron. Rather than trying to get everyone's permission and find out whether they post only their own pics, wouldn't it be easier just to contact an individual for permission when you find a picture you like? Just a thought.

By the way, Chicago has really become a world class city. I don't know how far away Granite City is from Chicago, but a visit here might be something to consider some time in the future. I'm really proud of our city, but I have to admit I still want to move to Los Angeles in a few years when I retire. I can't bear the thought of more winters here. :-)

Granite City, IL(Zone 6a)

Thanks to all of you!

Shebs45, yes it does probably seem simpler to ask individually. But I actually kind of feel 'embarrassed' by asking at all and doing so to the entire group at once just seems easier, if that makes ANY sense. It's just that as I said in my request, there are SO many photos of subjects and places I'll probably never see or get to go to and I'd love using subject matter far more diverse than I can get on my own. So I ask. But everyone I've asked has been so kind I may try doing it one at a time (once in awhile anyway ;o).

sicdms, your Shorty looks VERY much like our ‘Rocky’ (named 'Prince Harry' when I got him). I just adopted him from Hope Rescues a month ago. He’s very close to a year old and very small. Thanks for that darling photo. He’s doing what I SHOULD be doing right now……SLEEPING! Well…..I think I see HIM peeking but I should be in bed. LOL

titaniumRX8, THANK YOU SO MUCH! You’re very generous. These are ALL such beautiful photos, especially of your garden! It’s just beautiful and I can easily see how much time and love you’ve invested in it.

Oh, Shorty has a new habit now-I titled thisone "Lazy Days of Summer"

GrammyJo: Question? If you are going to use a DGr's picture as the base for a project, is it your intention to then request that he/she send you a high res copy? Printing companies want 300 dpi pictures for printing artwork. PIctures posted on DG are all 72 dpi or less, meant for computer viewing, not acceptable for professional printing. Just wondering.

Granite City, IL(Zone 6a)

Shorty in the hammock huh?......TOO CUTE! ;o) My Rocky is inside only, though he is fully clawed (still need to post a photo of that sweetie). But believe me he DOES 'kick back' plenty!

Pastime, are you sure that D’sG photos are ALL posted at that res.? For instance when I click on jlp222's nasturtiums that photo is at 800x600 pixels and quite sufficient for using in my software. And I've opened photos that are far larger than that here too. Never the less, I can increase the res. of any photo of decent pixel size in my program and enhance it more. That is more than ample for manipulation in digital software. Of course though the higher the res. the BETTER. When I post a finished 'work' for those that allow me to use their photos IF the quality isn't good enough for them I'll send them the full res. one by email if they like. I'll just see how it works out.... ;o)

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Have you printed those pictures? Things can look great on a computer screen even when they're at fairly low resolution, but then when you go to print that's where it becomes obvious that the resolution wasn't really good enough (unless you're printing super small pictures).

Granite City, IL(Zone 6a)

The greater the pixels the more information you have. I normally increase resolution when working on a photo. The finished work is always in high resolution (mine are) and look great printed out. I’ve even taken a VERY poor quality picture and from manipulating it turned out a nice looking finished product. You can also get software that will allow you to ‘blow up’ a good photo to poster size (or larger) and still retain very high quality. And when I do post a finished photo (or ‘painting’) for someone in here if they don’t have enough resolution all they’ll have to do is tell me where to email the file in high resolution (plus it wouldn’t have the copyright print on it). ;o)

Grammy Jo, show us some of your work if you have anything to share.

ecrane3: That's what I was trying to figure out. Increasing 72 dpi to even 210 decreases the print size of an 8 x 10 down to a little more than 2" x 3".

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I have noticed that when posting some pictures in some forums, the photo is resized "behind the scenes"

For example, I upload a picture at 144 DPI and then download the DG version of that same pic and violets! it's 72 DPI.

Also, I think it resizes any photo over a certain pixel width to suit its needs.

A panorama I uploaded that was probably 4 foot wide is now only inches in the post.

This all makes sense, if you consider that space is of a premium and dial-uppers have a heck of a time with larger files.

For best results, you should email (maybe Dmail might work, but do not know) the original file directly to a "normal" email address. Not that Dmail isn't normal ... I love Dmail!!

Edit:

In the interest of full disclosure: I am, by trade, a graphic artist who owns a small business in Large-Format Digital Printing. Our focus is on full-color artistic quality prints on a variety of media (including canvas, Concorde Rag, etc.) at widths up to 54" by any length. I would be most happy to be helpful in any way I can.

I could see by the time you do some digital manipulation that you might not notice poor resolution in the original image as much. But you can't create resolution that wasn't there to begin with--even if you take a 72 dpi picture and change the resolution to 200 or 500 or whatever, you can't get back the level of detail that was lost when the person's original picture had its resolution reduced. But I'm not sure that the pics that are posted here are changed to 72 dpi, I know that pictures are downsized somewhat when they're uploaded, but they don't all wind up the same size when displayed on the screen here, so maybe some smaller lower resolution pics might end up at 72 dpi, but when someone uploads a picture that's higher resolution to begin with I think it will end up at a higher resolution, although still not quite as good a resolution as the original had. So as long as the pics that are being used are ones that look a reasonable size on the screen I could see that it could still look OK when it's printed.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

I saw a picture on the DL forum that was sized at 400 inches wide at 1 dpi. Talk about resizing.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

hmmmm ..... so, that would be 5.55 inches on most 72 PPI monitors, but when you print that puppy out at 400 inches wide you will find it is really millions of different colored 1-inch squares.

:-)

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

It sure would.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

even Billboards are at least 10 DPI :-)

Oh, and btw, I would never, ever charge a gardener to look at or fix an issue with their digital files .... I didn't mean to imply I was looking for customers!!! :-)

Woodbury, MN(Zone 4a)

Wanted to add my 2 cents worth...
BTW, Grammy, since I don't know how to change settings for the watermark, if I post anything you want, you can dmail me w/ an email addy and I can send full resolution. (I'm also an artist, but with NO time! So it'd be lovely to see anyone get some use out of all these pictures!)
