Fall Jacksonville Roundup

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

TY Sheila... for the ID.. now I remember seeing a tree of it at Emmas.. and the seed pods looked exactly as the person described it on the plant ID forum

Maggie.. I too am interested in Kenboys method of overwintering bananas.. my dh is going a lil gaga over them..lol and that is surprising to me as he hasn't really shown much interest in my "blood sweat and tears".. soo I am really wanting to do everything I can on the bananas...

David.. we got a lil over 1/2 " of rain.. Here's hoping Edwuard will bring us all rain tomorrow.. but not much of the wind!

I'm sorry to hear that, Karen. I can see taking the bad (wind) with the good (rain)... wind with no rain is just cruel!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry about your TX Star Karen, but look at it this way; in a couple months it would be gone anyway and it will come back next year!

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Karen, I just up-potted some Texas Star to take them thru August, so if you need another one or two I can provide them.

All this talk about being back in school when you visit here - geez - I think we need to LIGHTEN UP! LOL!!

When we first put up the web site we were raising and selling lots of peafowl. Y'all thought we have a lot now, we have maybe one TENTH the number we used to have. Anyway, it's hard to find info on diseases and health problems in peafowl, so we included a lot of info about that in the peafowl section and people have really found it helpful.

I am hoping to make the new garden section of the website as informative as the peafowl section is. There's lots of plants people can be successful with in this area, there's just not a lot of info on how to do it. Most Texas gardening books are written for the major metropolitan areas, and speak to caliche (kah-lee-chie) soils and much different humidity than we have here. There's a total lack of information about the benefits of using gypsum - which is a totally natural and 'organic' soil amendment that does wonders with all types of clay soil. Yes, organic matter is a basic, but gypsum will really help those places that have been 'scraped' by bulldozers in order to build the house. We could not grow the gingers, bananas, etc that we do had I not applied gypsum (and it's CHEAP). We wouldn't have half the big old oaks without it either. It let the little rainfall we had in the drought years penetrate to the oak roots instead of running off. Oh dear, I seem to be on a soapbox here, I will stop.

Anyway, I guess it's real hard for us to lighten up, we are so committed to the proposition that everyone can have their own little patch of Eden.

I will be so glad when I can start talking about my plants ... its so hot and everything is burning up. But I miss gardening... How much longer do you think it take to cool down? Probably not until the end of August! I know its terrible to think like this, but I would not mind a good hurricane coming through here. :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Bite your tongue missy!!! Just a good rain cloud that stays for 3 or 4 days would be the ticket!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia...ohhh you meany..lol..we ran from Rita, and came to Dallas.. IF there is a next time I'll look you up and then YOU can come back and clean all the mess up..lol

This lil storm hit land due south of us this morning.. we are getting light rains without much wind.. good farmers rain.. as my Daddy would say.. and I am sooo gratefull!! Dh said 20,000 are already without power... I sure feel for them! We were without power for 2 weeks after Rita!

Maggie... NOOO please continue!! I enjoy learning!!

Dallas, TX

Well, I am sorry but I was raised in Miami Florida. As kids when a hurricane was coming, it was exciting times. It blew all the coconuts off the trees and the next day everything looked so clean and white ... I don't remember anything bad happening to anyone ... then again I was a kid.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

No rain again today in Frankston, although it was promised, BUT the temp has dropped tremendously and there is a fresh, cool wind all day and nite. I watered everything early this morning and my plants still look fresh and relieved tonight. Tomorrow is predicted the same.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia.... I remembered when Carla came through Houston when I was a child too. Yes we loved it, cause the streets would flood and we had our own lil swimming hole for a lil while. Momma filled the bathtub with drinking water.. just in case.. but I don't remember it that well. I also remember when the fog trucks (for mosquitos) would come through that all us kids would get lost in the fog, and never think a thing about it..LOL The things we did back then.. people would think we were nuts... welll???? hmmmmm????..lol We had fun back then though

Dallas, TX

LOL... Becky I am so glad you understand... yes we did have fun! And when I got older, we had Hurracaine Parties at the local neighborhood Taverns... lol We would party all night... or day! whichever way the wind was blowing. lol We were told that was the best place to take up shelter! lol

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

OH Sylvia... I am really LOL.... I wouldn't have figured that a tavern would be the place to be.. unless ya'll were all drunk out of your minds... course then you wouldn't care or maybe even know when the hurricane ripped through town!!..LOL...

OH for the simpler times.. now that I think about playing in those flood waters.. now knowing it was mixed with sewege and Lord only knows what... but back then we didn't worry about all the things we do now. Much simpler times!!

Karen I do hope you got some rain.. at least that would make up a lil for the wind doing a number on your TX Star... It was 75 when I was going to see Momma yesterday afternoon... wow that was sooo nice... I almost got chilled..lol today it wasn't too bad.. but I am sure tomorrow we will be back to normal

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok, so far I know I have to have a spot by David and Maggi. Teach ya'll to be bad to me!!! Anyone else got anything to say, hummmm? lol

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

I guess she didn't like being by me.......?????..LOL

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Poor Lorraine, what with being strapped on top of Pam's Blazer and then being shushed by me every 3 minutes, she's really going to need a safe haven. LOL!

I'm looking forward to a special visit :~) tomorrow, but I wish we'd get a miracle overnight rain to freshen all the plants. I guess I'll have to get up before dawn and start running the sprinklers.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

We're supposed to get rain tonight,,,and tomorrow, oh boy ...

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

D

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

I got 1" yesterday and a drizzle today..
David.. I am wondering about mamajack... she has a thread up on the TX forum... I am dying to meet her too.. so far she has disappointed me 2x.. but the 3rd should be a charm!! Let's hope anyway!
Poor Karen.. I bet you melted you are sooo sweet!!...hehe

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Unless Mamajack has a very big change of luck, she will not likely be attending.

As for her plants, she says her garden looks like it has been on fire.

She says no one can help her at this time. All we can do is keep her and her two children in our prayers. She really does need us doing that for her.
