Becky

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Look forward to seeing you guys again. I am in for the Oct. RU. Will know better on how to do things since this will be number 2 for me.
D

Rusk, TX

Count me in.
DdeTex,
You mentioned that you will know better what to do this time. This will be my first RU. What advice do you have that you would've liked to have known before your first one?

Mary

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I sure hope I can come. I am scheduled to be OOT the entire next week, and that might be too much. I have very deep roots in that area. My great (something) grandfather settled there about 1841.
I have family in Tyler (and Troup) and good friends in Jacksonville. I've never been to an RU either. Just attended the swap and social in Houston, but that's all I've been to. OK, I'm a newbie.
Lou

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Welcome, Lou. :) You'll love the RU.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh I do hope you can come Lou would be so nice to meet ya and the Philippine violet is doing well.
An RU is to trade plants and meet face to face kinda like RJ's Social

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The Arlington RU was set for quite some time on the 18th....
Sure wish we could have two weeks between the two IMHO. Back to back weekends are very hard for some to handle.

I see your point, It does get tough with the back to back. I'll go to both and probably only choose to trade at one and visit at the other. The biggest problem I see with moving two weeks apart...Too early and it's still to hot to propagate in time and the 25th is really pushing the limits for the East Texas 7b and 7a zoners to get plants in the ground.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

That and weather conditions play a larger role for people too, the further we go into the fall...the way it looks to me the 4th or the 11th are really the only options..

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I suspect that I will just come to socialize in Tyler and not try to trade at both. The North Texas Fall RU is a big one, and I can't imagine being able to propagate enough stuff for both.

I do wish that we could separate them some in time. East Texas and North Texas are just not far enough apart in distance to have them one week apart. Too many people want to do both. I mean, Tyler's only about 30 minutes farther for me than Arlington is, and anyway my roots are in East Texas, so I want to go. But I also want to go to Arlington. Maybe next year we could consider combining them? We could have one in the spring and one in the fall, one in DFW and one in Tyler. That way both could be bigger, and the organizers would get a break.

Speaking of big, did y'all read the article about the Iowa RU in April? The author claimed it's still the largest RU, with 55 in attendance. Didn't we have almost 70 people last October in Arlington?

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

but I heard from someone today that says that park is well worth it--could be a smaller RU and just let some of us rent campsites/cabins for additional days and make a really nice vacation/ru combo out of it

always thinking down here
=)

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, that park is WELL worth the trip, RU or no RU. My family used to camp there at least once a month when I was a kid. The dam had broken, so the lake was very low, and usually there was no one else in the whole park. You could go all over the place and back through the woods without ever seeing another person. I had some of the most beautiful "nature moments" of my life in that park.

The only problem I can see is that now everyone knows about it. Last I heard, you need to make campsite reservations a few months in advance, because it fills up. It's one of the places everyone goes to see fall colors.

So, next year, why couldn't we do a spring RU in Arlington, and a fall one in Tyler?

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

That sounds ideal........we probably all have to wait and see what goes on with the economy and fuel prices before we can plan that long range...sorry to throw a monkey wrench, just trying to keep a positive perspective here...

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

I will be at both RUs. I will start enough plants for both and hope they survive the heat. I will be watching for bargain plants at Lowe's to share.

Charlene

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I do that too Charlene, already starting to pick up a few here and there..
try to fatten them up a little to divide to go around...

"eyes"

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I've been pulling stuff out too. It's hard to keep potted stuff looking good in this heat, though!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

the camp sites are wide open on-line for most of the month of October

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It is nice to see that so many people want to make both R.Us, unfortunately I can not make it on the 11th, the native plant society is having a sale on that day at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, and I am scheduled to help.
Having them in two consecutive weeks seems like a hard thing to do for those who want to attend both.
Maybe we could move the Arlington one to the 25th?
That would leave one week in between and make easier.
I will ask on the other thread and see what everyone thinks.
Pattie, you are right, we did have over 70 people here last year.
Josephine.
I should have said the 25th, sorry.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

I will probably not be able to attend the one in Arlington personally. It is just too far for me to drive with gas costs the way they are. The east Texas ones are just perfect for me. Not to far to drive, low gas costs, I can go home that night, and we had probably 70 people easy at ours in June too. Several commented that it was the largest RU with the most people and plants that they'd been to. And that was just our first one!

I guess it's just a matter of seeing friends you know alot of times as well as enjoying the travel, but in my personal situation I am happy with just connecting with my East Texas friends a couple of times a year and staying within my geographical area without traveling hours to get somewhere else to do the same exact thing. I think the East Texas RU will continue to build even bigger than it was with around 70 in June, as there are a LOT of DG'rs here in this immediate area that can travel here easily and get back home afterwards, and I foresee it becoming a big tradition in our area now that it has started. That said, I understand and appreciate those of you who enjoy traveling to different areas and going to several RU's to see old and new friends, it's just not an option for me personally.

I am happy with whatever is decided. Please don't anyone take my post wrong, I am only expressing how I am feeling towards things. The Jacksonville RU rocked so hard I can't imagine feeling like I'm missing out on anything.

Karen I can understand where you are coming from.. but I have made friends all over TX ( as you have too!) and I want to meet them all!!..LOL Or see them again!! And believe me.. (I sound like a pro here.). and I have only been to 2 RU's ..BUT they are different!! A great time was had at both.. and I am looking to go to Jacksonville AND Arlington. I really appreciate the concerns shown on both threads for the ones of us that want to attend both!! TY Josephine and Phyllis!!

It will still be fine with me even if they are only 1 week apart.. I am fortunate that I don't work!

Becky

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

4th? 11th? Which way are we going....

"eyes"

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Since I have been helping with the Arlington RU, it will be my place to swap plants. If I make it to the Jacksonville one, I probably won't have trades. .....Curious...Why not September so there is more time to plant? Everyone always picks October, is there a reason I am not getting?

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Dawg Days...........too dang hot!! Preparation for school starting for lots of the folks....

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree--Sept way too hot. If anything, move it to the 25th (thats the weekend after Arlington, right?). If ya'll pin down the date I will reserve a campsite probably from Thursday on that week so I could do whatever needed to be done the day before.

I'm looking for a few "getaways" this fall--its been a busy early summer and construction/destruction of house/property going on here since February. I'm determined to get all my usual October seeding done in Sept this year (famous last words) and play in Oct.
=)

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

What about the 4th then... That way I would only have to drag plants to Sabine Pass for the Arlington swap..??? LOL I do know Josephine started her thread way back in February, and they picked a date then. I dion't care which date is picked for either. I will still try to make both.. and trade for both. The trading is what is helping to make my yard beautiful.. and full of good memories of the sweet people I have met!

Becky

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I said the 11th as it is a 3 day weekend with Monday being Columbus Day a holiday that would give those traveling an extra day to relax afterwards or use it for the "last vacation" before fall set in.

I think a part of the issue with all the trading is we have had several get togethers outside of RU's this year ...
not that I haven't enjoyed them as I have and I went to them ...

but maybe it is just making us feel a lil over whelmed with being able to have plants to trade.

Gilmer, TX

I hadn't thought about Columbus Day. That would great!! It would give me an extra day to deal with my new babies. I agree, Sept. is usually too hot, though I have been at the Gladewater Art Festival the last week-end in Sept in long pants and sweatshirt.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Debbie.. I am looking forward to meeting you!!

Phyllis... so it's settled then.. the 11th!! I didn't think about the long weekend.. and that sounds great for the ones that can camp!! And also gives the ones anextra day to maybe get some plants in the ground if they have to go to work!

It's kinda hard keeping plants in pots right now.. it's too hot! I can't even think of how the girls could keep those lil 4" pots watered enough! I am sure that is part of the problem.. and especially with 2 RU's back to back!

But the thing we need to get back to and remember is the sweet fellowship we enjoyed.. the food.. and the plants are like the icing on the cake..
Becky

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Since I am mostly retired most weekends will work for me. With the heat now and our gardens looking wilted, we think things will not be nice again after a good rain and cooler temps but they always seem to surprise us. I hope that many can make it to this one even if they do not have plants to share. If you remember there were lots of folks that had lots of things. Many "Free for all" placed on the sidewalk at the end, so I think that getting some plants will not be an issue. For me, I want to have a chance to really get to know some of the folks. Last time was so rushed that I missed that part of the benifits of a RU. I like a face with the post I read and making friends. All I met have neat things about them that I enjoyed, yes even you Loraine :).
Come on down and let's sit a spell and chat.

You're right about getting to know people David. Just barely got to say 'Hi' at the RU, so our little trip down to Jacksonville later was a treat. Got to see you place and sit on the porch and visit. Thenyoulead us to Emma's to get aquainted and sit and visit some more. Your wife's cake and plants were a pleasant bonus.

Emma, all but two of my cuttings rootedand are already in pots. The MGs are doing well too.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

As Cocoa said above, the 25th is really pushing it as far as being too late. I think that's around the date last years Arlington roundup was (or was it 2006?). I remember barely having time to plant stuff before cold started hitting.

The 4th week in September through the middle of October seems to be prime time for Roundups in the northeast Texas area. That way you have about a month to prep and and close to a month to plant the new stuff.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

See y'all the 11th at Tyler State Park...kick back a relax, the kids will all be back to school, so should be refreshed and ready to go...bring TV for David and DH...look around for some bulbs that reward big, but don't take a lot of space...bring lots of chairs for lounging...can we stick our toes in the water??

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

O.K. Everybody, the pavilion has been reserved at Randol Mill park in Arlington for October 18th as originally planned.
Josephine.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Good deal Josephine.... now I think we need to just make the J RU on the 11th.. and let that be one decision made!! What ya think??

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I think that would be just fine, and let us not worry so much.
You are a sweetheart Becky.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Get those carpool buddies lined up. We hope to see you all at both places where possible. We have two beautiful locations and loads of faithful DG ers to participate.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Well that's 4 Phyllis.. for the 11th... what say you?? you still talking to me?? huh???...lol
