David.. that sounds soo interesting! I really wished that I had been able to come see your place.. so I could "invision" this a lil better!! Did you just stick the lil trees in the ground? or with concrete? How long do the "trellis" last? OH me... you'll wish you hadn't posted ..lol I am FULL of questions...hehe
Becky
Fall Jacksonville Roundup
Beck if you looked at my site you aw the arch I we made from winged elm trees they are just stuck in a deep hole and filled in.
I took wire to "tie" the branches where I wanted and used dead vine to fill in some.
Beck
I did mine like Mibus described. Tree trunks, branches and vines to fill in all tied with wire. I do add a rebar stake for strength. Mine have lasted for about 3 years. Did have to replace one this year. Not bad for free material.
D
OK, Dde, there's a huge Golden Bamboo patch just down the road from Kathryn's and I've had it in my mind to do trellises and arches with it. Tell me what materials I need to collect to tie them together with and then be prepared to teach me how to build them - LOL!
Am I right that green bamboo would be best to make arches with and when it dries it will stay in shape? Just guessing here.
TY soo much David.. I wish I had thought of that earlier.. I will be off to the woods in the morning.. I like this idea way better than buying one.. and not just because of the costs!! I have some realy big grape vine.. all curvey.. and am thinking that will look pretty neat..
maggie.. I sure am glad you will be getting in on this project.. more info and ideas for us maybe..lol
Phyllis.. yes I saw it but the pic I looked at was showing mostly the birds nest... got any more pics??
hmmmmnnn......wonder what I can trade for her grapevine trellis..
"eyes"
There's another property not too far away that has huge wisteria vines and I know there are lots of grape and muscadine out there.
Has anyone ever found a use for briar? LOL!
Yep.....keep four legged critters outta the flower bed...LOL
"eyes"
then look at the pictures for march or may one of them has the pics of building the arch way the one with the bird nest was already here when we moved in.
Have ya'll ever heard the song "Why's everybody always pickin on me?" Well, why is everybody always pickin on me. I'm such a nice quiet timid little southern belle. I can't imagine people thinking otherwise. David, you just make sure you get a place close to Pam and I so I can go through all your plants. he he he
I'm glad there is one here, cause if not, I'd never get to go to one.
And it will be nice weather then
You better watch Lorraine..David... remember my DH had to run her out several times.. Yeah.. right.. she thought she was in her spot......LOL
Lorraine... southern belle with bare feet..hehehehe
I don't care if I get a spot "by" Lorraine or not, I just want to get there BEFORE her! LOL! So there will be some plants left :) Luv U Lorraine :)
Well, she can only grab so much, or she might be litterally flying by the seat of her pants....LOL...gal can always find a way to get in trouble...
"eyes"
She's sneaky.. that Lorraine.. and sooo lil .. she can be there and then you turn around she is gone.. hehehehehe
I am not the expert on trellises, arches and other supports for vines but like the way that they look at my woodsy area. The main thing to consider is how sturdy do they need to be and how long do you want them to last. Most that I have constructed have lasted about 3-4 years. I try to find trees in thick areas of the woods that were forced to grow curved. I like those that are about 2" or more in diamater. Seems like elm trees have been my best selection. I have seen neat ones made of creap myrtle and sassafras but I do not have access to much of these. I want them to be 8-9 feet tall so I can sink them a foot or more in the ground. I trim most branches off unless I see an interesting grown fork. These are the bones of the structure, sometimes with rebar driven into the ground to reinforce them. Then vines to fill inbetween. Wild grapevines are OK but do not last very long. There is a briar type vine that is evergreen that is my first choice. They are curlly and interesting shapes. I may cut them at the ground then come back days later after they are dry to unwind and use. You can use wire or a good nylon twine to secure them to the post. Nails and/or screws may be better but harder for me to use. Wire works best for me as I can tighten them better than twine.
With bamboo, I think that after it has turned brown is best. Green shoots may want to split. This material is not as strong and gives more of an oriental look. The trees/vines is more rustic which I prefer.
Just play with it and you will get a nice one. I have picked up the metal things made in Mexico at flea markets like stars and things to decorate them but vines cover them quickly, particularly MGs. Your imagination will take you to the fianl look of your project. Again, msdoolittle and Keith 6841 have very nice ones that you would want to copy. Wish they would come here and post photos.
My method has been trial and error with lots of error. Good thing is the only cost is in time and I seem to have lots of that. Good projects when gardening time is slow.
Go for it and good luck.
DD
TY for the ideas.. and the step to step process... sometimes.. I am the type person that would rather see it done.. but you explained it soo well!! TY David!!
Once again , I ask the question, "Why's everybody pickin on me?"
Ya'll just wait, I'm gonna be so calm, cool and collected this time, you won't know me. Even if you BEG me to take a plant, I won't!!.
Well, except David, everytime his back is turned, I'm swooping in!
Now, get seriious. Since I've never been to one, what kind of stuff do you bring to a fall round up?
same thing as a spring one LOL just plants for fall or to grow over winter for spring planting instead
Loraine-Hope we will all be cool in October. I will be more on gaurd this time for you with friends watching. If you will be calm and collected you must have gotten meds or growing a special herb from a trade. Are you holding out on us from that special plant ?
Look forward to seeing you and others in October. Catlady- the gourds were a fun project with the grands. We collected seeds, painted and made neat bird houses. Hope you bring more in October from your festival.
DD
Still hot and no rain.
I have my doubts about the cool, calm and collected part. So far I have not seen any signs of that on her visits here. LOL
I think the anticipation of the October RU is all that is getting me thru this heat and drought. Our community water company is going to be quite pleased with their bottom line when this is all over with.
Maggie... that is a beautiful flower.. what is it??
AWWW.. pooooorrrr Lorraine... she has to sleep.. right ?? LOL.. you know I luv ya girlie...
Aha, that's one of the Curcuma we are needing to identify. Moodene has given us several and that one lost it's tag :~(
We used to think Curcuma and Hedychium were the only Gingers for us to grow here, this year we are finding that the Costus we left in the ground over winter are performing really well. I hope to have pics of blossoms on them very soon, we're seeing buds forming now :~)
I am just getting into gingers... I have one that I think might be a ginger and have had it maybe 6 years.. but didn't know what it was when I got it and still don't. It has never bloomed.. I think I'll dig one up and maybe ya'll can ID it for me at the E TX RU...
It doesn't look my cleome but there are several different kinds.
I have a cleome and it isn't like mine either. I will try checking those, thanks.
Hey.. ya'll........I got one too.. LMK.. If I happen to miss the ID..please
Hi KIds LOL...had to stop in a d say Hey from Illinois. and let ya all know I am trying to mentqally send this weather down to ya.....we went to my youngest nieces softball game and had to put on jeans and take a jacket ...1 so teh skeeters didn't eat ya and second cause it is ony 67 at 10pm...LOL
:-p~ !!! Or whatever the raspberry symbol is! LOL!
Hope you are having fun, not just thinking of us sweating in TX!
oh my goodness Phyllis, you will probably go into shock when you get back here to Hell's fire. I cant wait until night time. I wanted to start some cuttings, its just too hot to get in those bushes.
Sheila go to bed ... just because you don't have to go to work ... its no need to stay up all night. How is Herman doing?
well Miss smarty pants.. I want you to know we finally had a good rain here this afternoon and I imagine we were low 70's..LOL I almost had to come in and put on jeans.. sooo there!! and the raspberrey thingy to you too!!...hehehe
I hear you Sylvia... I am afraid if I try to take cuttings that they would die.. so I think I will wait a couple more weeks.. then I will go ahead and list what I have.. at least I will have some new stuff this fall..yay!!
Sheila.. I looked on the plant ID and I guess no one knows what we all have.. surely.. who ever brought them will come on and tell us..?? Mine looks like they are fixing to bloom...
I brought cleome to the RU and this is not it. EmmaGrace had some tapioca plants and this may be it. If so they are hardy here and grow into a good sized tree. They do bloom and set seeds when larger.
Who got rain yesterday ? All around us but only a few minutes of rain here. Maybe today, we need it so bad. I picked up some plastic 55 gal barrels and am conecting them with a PVC pipe so that a good rain will fill each with the over flow. Charlene, these will help heat a greenhouse in winter as the water will release heat during the night.
Maggie-I got into the tropical this year with several types of EE, hibiscus and gingers. Are the 2 gingers I got from you hardy here or do I need to protect in the GH this winter? Am thinking of expanding my GH this fall.
DD
DdeTex - We brought the hardy gingers that have been growing here for years. They do like to be well-mulched for the winter, but I sense that's not really a problem for you with all those trees/leaves ;~)
Those were Hedychiums we brought to the spring RU, I hope to have a few Curcumas to share this fall.
We will most likely have some Orinoco banana plants too. They are the ones that Ken is getting fruit on here this year. He's been digging the pups when they get big enough and moving the pups to a raised bed where they are growing like crazy. The pups should be good producers next season.
I am totally reworking our web site this month and hope to have it back up in September. Ken will contribute a write-up on how he stores his banana plants for the winter, to ensure good growth and early fruiting. He's so excited about eating his home grown bananas this year.
Maggie/Ken
I do have plenty of pine straw and leaves for mulch and use it on most every thing. My gingers from you are in large pots as I did not know for sure on their hardiness. Will plant in ground soon. Would like to wait for a good rain since it is so dry. I have some nice sized plants that need to go in ground but not now. Have a Rattlebox from Emma and a Royal Empress ( Paulownia ) that are growing fast. May wait until fall on them.
Never had a banana produce fruit for me so will look forward to Ken's method of overwintering. Also look forward to seeing your new and improved web site. Be sure to post when complete.
I want to vist your place and have for a while. Just can not get away but will prioritize and make it soon. You guys are so good at growing the unusual and a great source of information. A visit would be like going back to school. Meeting you guys was a treat at the RU.
DD
David, A trip to Maggi and Ken's is like going back to school, I learn something new everytime I go. I now know how to tell the difference in the three types of EEs. If you don't put a visit on the top of your list, it should be close to the top.
Mary and David.....You are right it must be one that EmmaGrace brought. By the looks of the plant info, not sure it won't take over! LOL!
I did get an id on the thread too which confirms it.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/885642/
Sylvia...I guess I did go to bed about that time.
Phyllis & Beck.... Guess you know you have the tapioca plant now too.
ARGHHH!!! The sky got dark, the wind blew like a hurricane, taking limbs off my trees and splitting my new Texas Star Hibiscus in half where it joins at the root (2 of them) but only 2 drops of rain. That's it!!! Oh, I'm so disapointed.
