My First Egg!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

I think they sell out out of the patch BEFORE they sell out of chicks sis :o( and ....serves ya right cause its all your fault I fell for these cuties! lolol!

ps... I think you need about 25 bantie chicks...oh and how 'bout some more button quail? those were soooo cute!

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Your mean! Want ducks & peachicks only! At least for now......

londonderry, Australia

they put them up the back to make sure if u get them u will have the will power to follow throught and quit (not completely of course we still ned our chickens at home)

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i am hardly getting any eggs now. either the heat, or they found a nest outside somehwere. those broodies are taking over, still sitting on paper eggs...

Lodi, United States

Delphine and Colby have switched nests and are hiding their eggs again! I need a GPS to track the little rats. The last time I took eggs from their clandestine nest, Delphine ran over to watch me. So even though I left 3 eggs, she moved on! She is a strong willed and devious bird.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

i think little red is going broody. she is only about 19 weeks

Lodi, United States

Wow! Is that common?

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Bummer Catscan! I found my banty's nest last night. Decided to try your trick. Left 2 eggs (marked) & tossed the other 2. Nothing yet today. Tomorrow will tell for sure. Hope you find that nest soon.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

taht Delphine!!!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I have egg envy of ya'll, cant wait until I get some eggs. Once I get the coop built, ughhhhhhhhh, I may see if I can get maybe 10 pullets close to laying. I am sure I can for a price, but I want eggs.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

there is a guy NE of Amarillo with laying hens for sale, Black Australorps and RIRs...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I have a couple sources here I just have to have somewhere for them.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

I can't wait to taste some of these $50. eggs! I figure that's what they'll cost if I figure in all the expenses to raise these chickens before seeing a single egg!! LOL

MollyD

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh gosh Molly, I so hear ya there. i will relish that 1st few eggs. With some cheese, onions, fried taters and a slice of home grown mater. Ok wiping off the drool.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

LOL

Lodi, United States

$50! $50! I wish........MY eggs are at least $100! I am such an idiot......

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

no idiots here, just learning. It will figure out in the end.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

L2G is that the end of the chicken or us?

MollyD

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

the chicken fairy for sure. I AM DONE. I will take care of what i have then go from there, a neighbor told me about an auction coming up in september, I should be able to sell these crested for a lil bit.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

We're not buying any more till next spring. We've already agreed that we'll order about 50 chicks but not firm on what breeds though we both prefer brown eggs. At least half need to be roos for eating.

I just had the oddest experience. I was sitting on a bench enjoying a little "chicken therapy" when Colby my RIR came staggering up in a crouch. She looked like she was doing a Groucho Marx imitation, even using her wings to help her move along the ground. I was immediately alarmed--had something attacked and maimed her? But there was something very deliberate about it. Looking for a rooster, maybe? No!

She made one more lurch forward and I heard a little pop! There on the grass was a perfect shell-less egg--like an alabaster globe glowing white and gold. The skin was tough enough to hold it together. I washed it off and put it in the fridge.

Poor thing never made it to her hidden nest. Serves her right!

londonderry, Australia

she couldnt hold it in any longer

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh my goodness, is that normal?

Lodi, United States

I think it is pretty normal for a young pullet, L2G, except for the way she tried to keep walking while she did it. Usually the egg just pops out. I wonder if it is actually harder to lay a shelless egg?

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Don't think so. Never noticed a shell less egg to bother them. My thought, easier cause more pliable? Really have no idea though. Always found them strange. And that the membrane is strong enough to protect - even rocks don't harm - yet easily pierced or busted. Odd for sure......

One of my Polish has stopped laying out of the blue. She's not broody, just hasn't layed for going on two weeks now. She's only a year old, what's up? Doesn't look like she's molting either.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Hi everyone, I've been watching this thread for about a month now while we were building our coop. We just got 2 RIR hens and a Barred Rock roo last night. They are pretty big, I would say almost laying size. We will be finishing their run this week. I hope it's okay to keep them in the coop until the run is finished because we have 3 dogs that might harm them if we let them out. The coop is 4x8 with roost, 2 nesting boxes and window. We are new to chickens and I am soooo looking forward to eggs!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Welcome Ascholz, sounds like you got it going on there. Sounds good to me. Yummy eggs. Keep us up to date with your chickens, and pictures are great also.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks luvs.... will get some pics on soon.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

ascholz, I too am new to chickens and have 2 RIRs and 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks....
learning right along with you! lol! mine are only 2 weeks old... so they are still in a brooder in my DSs room :o) but they are growing quickly!

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Heeyyyy ya'll! I have been trying to catch up and
see what is up- Welcome to the newbies that
have been visited by the chicken fairy!

We have been busy, rasing quail- I have been selling
hatching eggs for them. No hatching eggs for sale
yet for the Ameraucanas, they are all milling about, and I
haven't found a new home for the 4!!! cochin roo's yet.
I will keep Splash Gordon, but 2 black and 1 blue roo
have to go. I sure am getting lots of blue eating eggs!
We had a fox mama and her kits get some of our chickies-
they started to roost in the tres, and one night, the foxes
got my only blue cochin pullet, a homegrown leghorn
cross, and one of my amer pullets. It was the one that
had laid double yolkers ever since she started laying, too!
OOHH! that ticked me off. BUT- my horse alerted one
evening after that, and I told DH 'there's something out
there'! And, guess what? DH got that fox!!! Yea! Good
Sophie! We started our chicken house and run, but have
not completed it yet- the horse and goats and dogs
do a great job of watching during the day, and I know
when somethings lurking, but at night-- now- it's been
so hot we have had 43 days at or above 100 degrees,
and we have been avoiding strenuous work outside all
summer, but there is still at least 1 fox out there- so as
things cool, that house and run have to be finished. ugh-
at least the chickens have been putting up with going
in the goats pen at night since the foxes did their deeds,
but I hate to do that to them, it's so hot, and they are a
bit cramped in there.
I have 13 ameraucana eggs in the bator, and 3 eggs
from my cochin hen that the foxes got, and I hope
they all hatch! Yes, I have chickitis- not ready to go for
the patch yet- LOL

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

the chicken fairy loves you truest!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

uh oh! she's swearing off the chicken patch?!

londonderry, Australia

i dont think she has had it for a while now

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

i threw the patch away and ordered japanese bantams.
[the cf found my hiding spot]

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i knew she would jordan! so, what colors did you get?

Lodi, United States

My baby wants to have babies! Brie, my Marans, just went broody. I thought maybe she was having trouble laying since she had been in the nest box all afternoon and hadn't come out to roost. But no! When I opened up the back of the nest box and reached under her, there was her dark brown egg along with all the dummy eggs. She let me remove her egg and then she carefully nudged the other eggs back under her. So sweet! But I suppose I should try to break her up? My only real worry is she will give the other pullets ideas--like a bunch of teenage girls who decide it would be neat to get pregnant together. Is it catching? Actually only the Delaware and Orpington are suppose to be inclined to be broody. The Welsummer and RIR are not suppose to be very broody--although I know they might.

And my Nankins now walk up to me to be picked up and put to bed. I'm in love.......
T

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

uh oh! those nankins! i need a patch! quick!

Lodi, United States

There is no patch strong enough to fight the power of the Nankin!

But I think Josh is working on another formula.......
